Taken in to what? That he shouldn't consider transferring already?
You think Cooney should consider transferring just because he didn't meet your personal expectations in his first season. That type of mindset is an example of our society of instant gratification.
I'm just calling them as I see them.
I don't think he met anyone's expectations, not just mine. I was looking for basic competence and not a lot of What mistakes, especially 30 games deep into the season. I'm sure he's disappointed too. Can't be a lot of fun sprawling across the floor in from of a huge crowd and a national TV audience.
Your mindset seems to be the "Trophies for all and juice boxes for everyone" philosophy that has crept into American society. "Whatever we do, let's not be judgmental. " There's a lot of "thin skins' on here. I say the kid looks to me like he ought to find a level he can play at and you'd think I recommended assassinating the Pope.
I'm not looking for "instant gratification" at all. My assessment after the 20 or so games I have seen him in --- albeit briefly --- is that the game at this level is too quick for him. I'd guess a lot of his shooting problems are associated with his rushing his shot. And while you can improve shooting, fundamental quickness isn't something you can practice.
He could go on to be GMac --- or as someone projected "better than GMac because he has better tools"
He could go on to be a role player ... a three point specialist and every team needs these guys.
He could only improve a little and play as much or less than he does now.
I think every one would agree that he is not a high probability prospect to play in the NBA.
So, if he is not convinced that he is going to be a starter at SU, then what are his choices. Stay or go, right?
If he goes, and chooses the right situation, he could have a heck of a college career. Or he can stay and roll the dice with the optimists on here who like to point to those that did make major improvements after their freshman years. (Without mentioning those that did not.)
He could be Duncan who transferred from SU to Rutgers. Or he might be like Joe Flacco, who transferred from Pitt to Delaware.
My recommendation to him would be that he ought to go where he can play and play a lot. You only get four years to play in college. I'd like that to be Syracuse. After all, I've only been an SU fan since the 1960's.
Boeheim is all about winning. If you don't understand that about him, you will never get him. He wants to win and that's all he wants to do. And if Cooney can help him win, he'll be golden. But if he can't, or Jim B doesn't think he can, then he'll practice and sit on the bench and get into games at garbage time.
