becomes one of the all-time best point guards at SU and is a major factor in our recruiting over the next several years. He is completely unselfish, a born leader and just a great kid. He is one of the better passers I have seen as well. He will be a monster when he gets a little stronger. Some of you will say relax it is too early to tell, and maybe it is, but he is very quickly becoming one of my favorites.

He has sturggled in some games this year and I don't know if he "becomes one of the all-time best point guards at SU" but I can't wait to watch him develop over the next couple years. I believe he has that court vision that only the top players have. I feel good about his future.

...MCW is going to very good..how good cannot tell yet. Let's not predict and make expectations that may/may not be true...let him develop as he does within his own time frame.
Too many times, expectations are never reached...sometimes they are more than acheived...I believe this will be a good run and we all will enjoy MCW rise to whatever...a true PG for 'Cuse...who would have thought possible

It's been a long time since we've had a true point guard... not even sure who the last one was off the top of my head... I'd venture to say many years.

Totally agree. I think MCW goes down as one of the all time greats here.
-court vision has been awesome in the small sample we've been given.
-very unselfish, which is huge with the talent we have/is coming.
-hasn't really shown it, but going to be a great shooter from 3 and the line.
-matchup nightmare for smaller guards.
-length in zone will mean he's valuable defensively.
-by all accounts seems to be a great kid.

I guess it depends on what your definition of a true point guard is.

I thInk he means pass first. I'd say billy Edelin was a true pg

My view of a "true" point guard is a John Stockton type of pg who views their main role as getting other players the ball and facilitating the offense. A heavy assist guy who penetrates and kicks, is good at making the entry pass, has a really solid handle, and has great court vision and superb passing skills.

I don't think Flynn meets my criteria. I think Billy Edelin does, and may be the last one we've had... Obviously Sherman Douglas meets these criteria as well. Lazarus Sims of course.

Way too early to proclaim he is an all-time great but he is a special talent. looking forward to the next few years.

He has what was obvious in Rick Jackson and Dion Waiters as freshman. You can see the talent there and know he is a can't miss star. As opposed to like a Mookie Watkins and Terence Roberts you never were quite sure. MCW , I am sure. This guy can be a guard for a NC team.

By his senior year, Sherm felt his main role was auditioning for the NBA. That sentiment was also shared by more than one of his teammates. He had a lot of assists but he also took the most shots of anyone on the team.

JB likes point guards who score and make the defesne guard them to set up passes.

MCW had one assist that looked just like the Sherman Douglas days. He drove to the top of the key and went up for what could have been a jump shot. But instead he fired a line-drive pass just aobve the rim and Melo dunked it in. It was the sort of thing Billy Packer used to complain was offesnive goal-tending, rather than an assist.

I do remember that... he took tons of his patented tear-drops if I recall correctly...

Jason Hart too. Thing is Boeheim does not define his guards as point, or shooting. His dream guard is one that does it all.

Wasn't there one game , I almost think it was against Providence, that he had 22 assists? (I know, I could look it up) I remembered at the time that to me looked like a NBA audition. Also thought the scorer was more generous to him as a Senior, than he would have been as say a Sophomore.

Yes, you're right about Jason Hart... good one...

That was the first time I have seen MCW and thought he could be something really special. I agree that after last night the sky is the limit for this kid IMO.

He does hold the record, and I do think it's 22

I wouldn't put Hart on the list of true point guards, if not because of his skill set then because of his role on his first three teams. In Hart's freshman through junior years, Boeheim needed scoring from him and he took (and missed) a ton of bad shots. His assist numbers were decent (as high as 5.8 as a freshman), but he never looked like a natural distributor.

His senior year was improved (on a much better team), but he was always more of a combo guard. Much closer to Flynn than Edelin/Sims in terms of skil lset and style of play.

How highly he ends up being ranked will be based on how long he stays, but the sky is the limit. If he stays three years then I can see him joining the likes of GMac, Pearl, Sherm, and Flynn (since the Dome era began). I think overall he will be better than Gmac and Flynn, but I am not sure he is selfish enough to score enough points in his career to completely jump them.

He made two passes last night that Flynn could only make in his dreams. Williams won't need to score 17 per game to surpass him.
