The team MUST be better than last season if for no other reason that Lester is in charge of the offense. Making the tight end a viable part of the offense again is a huge up grade in of itself. A batch of good RBs can't hurt. Hunt in his final year of eligibility might give the team a lift in the passing game.Stability in the WR group is good so in all aside from a rash of injuries that once again cripple the team'game on either side of the ball,I expect more and the AD will swell.

new AD's like their own guys. Pretty sure short of a miracle season Shafer is done here

pretty short of a disaster SS will be here next year. A new A.D. won't mess up a big recruiting year and I think we will have one of those. And there wouldn't be a rush to make big changes for a guy that just got here.

Not likely that the new chancellor is going to make a Nancy mistake, and let the new AD bring in a new football coach. Kent is here for the long term, and he doesn't want to start all over again with a new coach. Unless this season is a complete disaster, Stern get use to Scott as the football coach.

LOL...that is certainly one opinion and doesn't have a chance in hell of happening.

When the new AD arrives and says "...if I fire the coach, what is my budget for a new one?? The answer is...the same as this coach is getting paid, coach stays for sure.

Maybe we will have a big meeting and everyone gets a vote. SS is out until robert Washington walks in and says I think it's time for me and my friends to play. But, coach leaves. I leave. Coach stays, I play.

Nice reference...but schools don't make multi million dollar HC decisions based on HS recruits in the real world.

A 4 win season and I would hope Shafer is gone, recruits or no recruits. If a guy can't coach who cares who the recruits are. I'm sure I won't be alone in that assessment if we begin this season like last season.

The new AD will b different from Gross hopefully in that if we need a new coach he will find a guy who gets northeast football

Don't think it would happen with 4 wins.

And if you buy the argument that we (and Wake) have the biggest talent gap with the rest of the league - then talent is exactly what we need.

And SS detractors keep saying the guy can't coach - when it's clear the we have a very competent D. If Lester gets the O moving in the right direction and we finish with 4-7 wins, this coaching staff will have a chance to really build something.

So many eager to start over...

Sad to say but I think 4 wins saves SS's job. getting rid of coach P was a very different animal.

How 'bout giving the guy more than just a few years with his own recruits? I swear, the impatience here is REALLY beginning to...

If HCSS pulls out an 8 win season, wonder which side of the fence you'll be on, then?

If Lester is the right guy, a lot of things could fall into place nicely.

If he's not...

I really hope he is.

Yeah - it's pretty clear the future of SS is tied to Lester this season and maybe next.

Rooting for them. Good people.

I realize that you have a different investment in this coaching staff, but you also need to understand that Syracuse football fans haven't had a ton to cheer for in a long time. We've been incredibly patient and frankly many can't stand for two straight years without a bowl game, even if it's "unfair" to the coaches.

Not to be rude, but anything short of 6 wins this year and I'll ready to turn the page.

Completely agree. With patience I think Shafer could be here a long time with great results if we give him time. This is his first time being a head coach and I trust that he will develop into a good one, and that our patience and loyalty will pay off nicely in the end.

This is the kind of thinking that gets fans in trouble. We can't add the "long time" of mediocre to poor results onto Shafers two years and make a decision based on that. Anything pre-Shafer is unfortunate - but almost entirely irrelevant to making a determination on Shafers tenure.

You can't say "look, we've not been really good or majorly relevant since the 90's - so let's have a short leash with this guy." It may be the to turn the page on Shafer (I'd give him 4 years total) - but our misery as fans shouldn't be a determining factor.

Thats possible unless the OL allows the skill players show those skills.Shafer's team still hasn't scored a big time upset of one of the ACC's big teams as yet. This year might be a good time to get at least one of this kind ofteams to really demonstrate progress. If Shafer goes ,the question becomes how much will the AD have interns of salary offer a name coach? and staff?
