I wish our coach

for the love of all that is holy - it's Shafer. S H A E R. Shafer If you're going to criticize the man at least spell his name right.
Ugh such a pet peeve. If you cannot spell our GD coach's name, you cannot criticize.

I hate this fan base sometimes.

#1 - JB has been coach for 40 years. I can think of one time he swore in a press conference - when Gerry was called Overrated. That's the only time I can remember. Is JB any less passionate than Shaffer as coach?

#2 - People have posted on the board in the last 24 hours about being embarrassed at the foul mouthed fans around them at the game, swearing without regard to kids sitting nearby. This is family entertainment, after all.

#3 - I get that he was fired up. I get that he was trying to pump up the kids, to make this more than a moral victory.

But in comparison to Fournette, which was my original point, Shaffer came off as less classy than the kid who called us the original Running Back U, paid tribute to the great 44s, etc. I pointed out the contrast. If you don't like it, fine. I find Shaffer's lack of control in media situations to be a little embarrassing. It's not like this is the first time he has shot his mouth off inappropriately at press conferences. He needs better control of himself.

I have asked you I think about 4 times in this thread...since when are "damn" and "ass" swear words??

For the record, there was no lack of control, he meant to say every word in that presser. Nothing inappropriate about anything in that presser.

Go watch the Disney channel if you don't want to hear the words "damn" and "ass" and I bet you will hear them there too.

WOW, just WOW.

Be careful with using the "GD", ithacamatt might have a problem with it. Good thing you didn't use the word "ass". Might have been a bigger issue.

This must be performance art at this point. Did you seriously just invoke JB? The guy who likes to bully student reporters for sport in his press conferences? Yeah, that's a model of class, but Shafer saying a word that you can say on broadcast TV is to be reviled. Especially when it was part of a broader comment that was incredibly complimentary to an opposition player.

Sploosh. You know what I mean.

Mike & Mike just talked about this and whether or not they had a problem with a coach saying this about a college kid. Golic basically said don't be ridiculous and he has no problem with it. Greeny playing devil's advocate a little bit, but it didn't really seem like he cared much about it. Total non-story made into a story.

He's not why Greeny wanted to throw his lap top, I have to assume!

Please tell me they're not actually talking about Shafer's comments.

Yup. Only spent about a minute on it, but they still talked about it.

How anyone is even arguing this is ridiculous. Good kid. Understands SU RB history. Respects it and paid homage to it. That's nicer than anyone has been to SU football in 15 years. It's the respect everyone here craves (and complains about and uses for excuses) all the time.

SS should put the fire aside and acknowledge that and use it as moment to put the program ahead of all else.

44cuse

Shafer isn't reading the kids tweets. He acknowledges in the presser he had no idea the Fournette was interested in Syracuse history. He was also uber complimentary of Fournette in the presser. And personally I appreciate my head coach saying we wanted to kick his ass and hope to knock him out of the heisman race.

have you even watched the presser? first off, he said 'ass'. that's hardly a swear word and he was smiliing when he said it. nothing about it came off as less than classy at all.

'shot off his mouth' is just a little hyperbole. you should maybe go watch the presser.

Herbstreit probably called Greeny and said, "you guys need to talk about this, can you believe he said he wanted to kick his ass? OMG !!!"

The whole thing about Fournette "I wanted to kick his ass." Said it a couple times, swore another handful of times. You're on TV and you're the head coach. You're not still in the locker room. This is year 3, and he was coordinator for four years under Marrone. He should know better by now.
Dude... haha you have got to look at it from more than that angle. It was a compliment to Fournette..and i guarantee you #7 would agree. Don't take it that way.

I'd prefer if Shafer could make it through press conference without his patented brand of coach speak and Yosemite Sam-isms. He sounds like a turd. But I dont think he was being, or even trying to be disrespectful. Everyone saw that Fournette was two levels above Syracuse and a level above even LSU's most talented guys. Shafer didnt have to go up there and perform a sonnet to him.

Also, i think it was right that he was unsatisfied. I really liked the effort today, but there isnt a team left on the schedule that SU is noticeably better than. Every game they will have to scrap and claw. Shafer acting like "we didnt do enough" was probably somewhat calculated measure to keep the team in grind mode.
Stop watching the press conferences then..he is our Head coach and he isn't changing because you are sensitive. Ill be sure to talk to him at the next coach's show and let him know you want him to change..hopefully he doesnt throw me off the 2nd floor of Destiny.
