If I'm McDonald, I'm demanding my job back

Ya you're right it was much harder recruiting here then he thought. He took over after winning a total of 3 games the 2 seasons before. What recruits would willingly sign up for that? Let's also forget to mention that when he took over we had bottom 5 facilities as far as P5 programs. Facilities didn't improve until the Manley renovations that were completed in 2012, and still then they weren't that great. It's actually pretty amazing he did as good as he did. Those first 2 classes he had to fight for every single kid. We were a program in the gutter. Sure Marrone may not have liked recruiting, but that doesn't mean he wasn't good at it. He had a plan. He implemented it, and it was starting to show fruition when he left. That 2012 class that he had was shaping up to be very very good. The class before that produced a ton of contributors as well. All that was done with absolutely nothing. I would love to see how he would be doing right now with real facilities, and before this season a winning program. It would have been just as good, if not better then what we are doing now.
Marrone did a great job at stopping the bleeding. Let's not make it moire than it was. Half way through his last year, the board had plenty of people calling for his head. Marrone doesn't win with this schedule and these qb's.

We don't even know what qb's would be on the roster if he were here. Who knows who he would have brought in and how they would have performed. And why would you expect these qb's to perform well under a totally different scheme then they were brought in for? It's his fault they suck at doing something they weren't recruited for? Let's not make out this ACC schedule to be the SEC West. They played the same type of OOC schedule, and WVU/Louisville were just as good as anyone in the ACC outside of FSU. Hell at the time Uconn, Rutgers, and Pitt were just as good as the rest of our division outside of FSU, and Clemson 2013.

Shafer has yet to show he can do anything other then motivate his team to play hard. I used to feel we always had a chance because we weren't going to get out schemed. After what we saw last year with 3 brutal beatings, and then again this year, I have absolutely no confidence in this staff to consistently put our guys in a position to win. We are consistently getting out coached. That rarely ever happened during Marrone's tenure, and his teams routinely stepped up against better competition.

There was no comparison between the ACC schedule and the Big East schedule. You also forgot Clemson.

It's been awful all year -- with both of them. But let's face it there is very little talent on the offensive side of the ball. But whose fault is that? We look like a bad MAC team.
????
There is tons of talent on offense. Ishmael will likely go down as a top 5 all time SU WR. I expect Estime, Broyld, Custis and Parris would all put up big receptions and yardage numbers if healthy and properly coached. At RB Erv, PTG, GMII and DMC are all talented backs. On the Oline Hickey was a top 5 OT before the season.
The issue was not a lack of talented players. It was a combination of awful coaches on O, injuries and a lack of a moderately competent QB.

This board is also full of people without a clue.

Last years team is 8-4 minimum in the regular season.

I think they would have done okay with Wilson, if Zach Allen was here in a second year, who knows.

This team should have won UMd and NCSt as it is, there is five right there with everything going on.

This post is awesome.

I'm going to completely state an opinion I could never ever prove and those of you who don't agree don't have a clue.

Take a bow. You joined some of the board's all stars.

Here I am to save the day...why not 13-0 with a win over Alabama?

He's always been there in my book.

Really, that happens here all the time.

How about the post I was responding to. Same exact thing.

You think it's unfounded to believe that if the staff had stayed on into 2013 they wouldn't have improved on the 6-6 record from last year?

Better than who? The guys on the OL have all played better, as individuals and as a group than they did this year. Injuries played a big part. Did they suddenly forget how to play? West certainty showed he was capable of making plays down the field, not sure you can blame him for any of this. Broyld, out most of the year. Did Gulley forget how to be a good TB? Seems the statement held true for the defense across the board.

The offensive seniors of 2012 were much better than the offensive seniors of 2014.

The season showed that we had more issues with how we utilized talent than actual recruiting it.

Huh?

I think our upperclass offensive talent is near the bottom of the conference.

I think a lot of staffs see their team take a bit of a step back when they lose several prominent seniors in key spots (like, say, QB, WR1, WR2, LT). I would especially expect that at a non-factory like SU. Some QB was going to probably need 2 years to be developed, as Nassib was.

Having said that, they would have been building back to something very good again for 2014, certainly much better than 3 wins.

And this years defense has played better than 2012.

There is no way this offense should be this bad, and the talent isn't remotely as bad as the outcome.

With the players on this team the offense should be in the 50's or 60's and with this defense a 7 or 8 win regular season.

I've said from the first day of the year last year that regression should be expected. My problem with MacDonald was that it was worse than it should have been and that it was no better, and in many ways worse, this year from first game on.

Eh, not a ton better.

They're 29th in yards and 47th in scoring this year.

2012 they were 48th in yards and 46th in scoring.

I'd need to dig into advanced metrics, but superficially this year was marginally better.

Marrone put his best athletes on D, and Shafer is a defense first coach, so it stands to reason that's the better unit.

I just happen to think Marrone didn't get enough impact offensive players. It's not the end of the world.

This year wasn't about talent; Marrone had far less in his early years. This was about coaching and management of the program. We got less and less out of our talent as the year went on and I believe it will continue into the future. We had the talent to 5-7 games this year; we won 3.

Marrone also got to play two FCS teams and a Big East schedule in his breakout year in 2010.

We disagree and that's cool, but I think our talent, even when healthy, is not top half in the ACC.
