I'm sorry but McDonald blows...

Let's see...we have a 2 giant RBs. How about more power inside runs? How about running plays w/ a FB in the game? How about more play action with the WRs going DOWN THE FIELD vs popping back for screens. How about more two TE sets vs 3 WRs when you have very little talent at WR? How about huddling to make sure everyone knows the play and count to fix the penalty issues we've seen ALL SEASON LONG?

Then you are running right at Aaron Donald, who was unblockable for our guys up front...

Doesn't get time to throw many deep balls (where he can set his feet).

Not many scheme penalties, penalties are more holding. Huddling doesn't fix those.

Aaron Donald singlehandedly b***hslapped our offense.

McDonald isn't great but he can recruit and with a QB who shouldn't be buried on the depth chart and some more WRs that look like Cornelius and Estime, I think he'll be ok. We need recruiting on offense more than we need coaching. He can recruit, hopefully he'll grow into coaching.

Question is, can we afford to wait while he grows into the job?

Maybe the game calling was questionable, but bottom line is, you can't miss an extra point & a 40 yard indoor field goal! We should of won 20-17...this team isn't talented enough to overcome any missed scoring opportunities, especially against an opponent as equally matched as Pitt.

Definitely agreed. The defense played great and the offense played well enough for us to win. We lost on special teams...

Good question. I think we can afford it as long as the South FL talent pipeline is flowing and starts paying dividends for the offense by year 3.

Agreed there's not a lot to work with. That's still no excuse for the hot mess (in terms of play calling) that was displayed on the field today.
Yeah the one towards the end with over about 1:12 to go and you run the ball to Jerome Smith for 2 yards...really or how about to start the drive off with a run when you have 0 TO's and at your own 35 or 40 yard line with less than 3 minutes to go...mind boggling.

How do you know? Maybe they are holding because they are gassed? Maybe they are holding because they are late on the snap because they don't know the count.

Let's go in the opposite direction...

Can someone name one positive the no huddle has given them? Just one...please show me the great benefit of doing this.

It "seemed" like we were able to Oregon-esquely snowball on them when we went super fast but we're not good enough to overcome a negative play or short gain so once that happens, we flame out.

Yeah.

It takes forever for our guys to line up right. Huddling will take more time to get where they need to.

Whatever the cause of the problems--playcalling, execution, talent--we aren't good enough offensively to absorb having shi t gains on first down. We need to gain more positive yardage on 1st down to avoid having 2nd / 3rd and long--which our pedestrian offense just can't convert.

... huge missed opportunity today.

Worse yet, McDonald was not made available for interviews post game. Not good.

Seriously? I'm not interested in tarring & feathering the guy but sack the fluck up and explain some of your gameplan.

Might have been Shafers decision, but McDonald has to answer questions.

So what plays should we run?
With less than 2 minutes left while trying to get in field goal position how does he call a run to the wide side of the field. There is no chance in hell the RB can get out of bounds and the clock keeps running. A high school coach would not make that call.

Also we had to burn a time out early in the 3rd quarter because Broyld did not know where to line up. In game 11 players are still confused so its time to simplify the play calls like Marrone and Hackett did last year.

I actually hated that call too, but time wasn't really an issue. There was still a minute left when we were stopped. Earlier in the thread someone else complained that we ran it inside too much.

Cool kid killed it today, he was awesome.

Reminds me a lot of how lousy the offense was during your hero Marrone's first season. You remember--the guy you tirelessly defended at every opportunity no matter what the circumstances were.

Did he improve over time?

You mean the year after multiple years of sub 100 performance in almost every offensive category? This isn't the same program.

For the most part I think complaining about play calling is usually pointless, but there were key decisions made in this game that were ridiculous.

You mean when Marrone fired Spence after that lousy offensive year? I'm not saying McDonald should be fired, but it'll be interesting to see what Shafer does because there is no rhyme or reason to these calls.

GO, I know you're a diehard, but I'm at a loss to understand why you defended the previous head coach like a fervent zealot against any and all criticism--especially given all of the mistakes / on the job growing pains he and his staff went through--and yet you take pot shots at the current staff at seemingly every opportunity.

Play calling is not rocket science. I am not a football coach but I know that if my offense could run 15 plays and execute consistently, those are about the only plays I would call, albeit out of some different formations.

Second thing is that I don't understand the constant changing of personnel. The hurry up offense dies as soon as you sub because then the defense has to be given a chance to sub.

It seems nobody gets in a rhythm and gets enough snaps to get comfortable with anything.

Watch BC today, how many times did their stud Rb come out of the game? Not very often.

Watch SU today, How many plays was Jerome on the sideline? A ton.

Marrone said that as an OC that the hardest thing to do is stick with something that is working, running the same play over and over until they stop it. Our OC clearly has not learned this yet.

Again, it's not rocket science. I was shaking my head int he first half when we were driving and down to a 3rd and 1 and we try to throw a slant instead of run Jerome or a QB draw. That was the moment I knew we would lose the game. If you are going to throw the slant on 3rd and 1 then go for it on 4th down, both are gambles.

STILL SMH at this game.
