With all of the recent media discussion regarding new in-game features surrounding the basketball program and in-game experience in general (articles linked below), I thought it may be interesting to have a general conversation regarding the in-game atmosphere at football games. This is not centered on the physical dome upgrades, Miron Victory Court, ‘Cuse on the quad, etc. (most of which I think have been great! Minus the reseating of season ticket holders but I digress), but the the vibes in the dome itself between the opening and final whistles.

In my opinion as an alum and season ticket holder, SU has been behind the eight ball for years at this point when it comes to in-game atmosphere. I think that this falls on the school and the fans for not wanting to or coordinating in a meaningful way to create a unique experience. Certain things have been traditions or welcomed additions such as the train horn after touchdowns, the bells on third down, or the attempts to utilize the modern technology in the Dome. Even the wheel of cams gets the fans engaged which beats listening to the same music that the Dome plays during timeouts that it has for years.

I think the negatives outweigh the positives for me overall. For instance, when comparing our “light shows” with that of other power four programs you can really see the difference. Granted, Cuse playing almost exclusively day games/nooners dampen those efforts. But even when we have night games to utilize these features, I think there is potential for much better ideas. Other things just bother me from a game presentation perspective and makes me wonder if the coordinator of these events is fluent in football. For example, showing the artificial noise meter in a tv timeout before our offense starts a drive. I also don’t think we’ve updated our graphics packages for the boards since the dome renovations were completed.

Another issue I’ve noticed is that SU just seems content with just taking ideas from other schools and trying to tailor them to SU. Not bad in theory, but the best traditions emerge organically. Trying to morph Penn State’s zombie nation chant to C-U-S-E isn’t working. We also don’t have a unique entrance. Sorry, we aren’t Miami and all the smoke and sparklers won’t change that fact.

Even little things like joining the band spelling out Syracuse after the fight song could go a long way with improving fan interaction. This is coupled with the fact that other than Let’s Go Orange, as a fanbase, we do not have any other coordinated chants or cheers. Not to mention, when they try and shoe horn in a forced chant during a tv timeout.

Overall, the blame can’t be placed on any one group. It’ll take a concerted effort from SU, the fans, the students, etc. to try new ideas and make our own magic. I just get the sense that it is always just the bare minimum and not trying to truly make a unique environment. When it’s full and rocking, there’s no better place in college football to be. I think focus on all of the other enhancements could set it over the top.

One idea that I’ve seen from other stadiums/arenas is having a fan of the game. The stadium cameras roam the crowd and focus in on individuals that stand out and get the crowd fired up. They then pick finalists and have a final crowd vote for the winner.

Interested to hear other people’s thoughts or ideas. Go Orange!

Syracuse football: what’s it like returning to the Dome as alum?

What are those giant Xs on the SU hoops scoreboard and how do they involve fans?

I've been to many stadiums and my quick H0T Takes

1. Cuse fans are big event fans
2. Cuse CNY fans include numerous band wagon types (see #1) but if not for them we'd be FCS
3. Cuse Alumni generally are pro fans and don't travel to Cuse from the BOS-WASH
4. Cuse fans don't do cheers, hand signs or themed songs during the game.
5. Tailgate culture is improving but still has lots of room for improvement

I went to Miron last game for the first time. It was a decent area. First time maybe in 20 years I’ve been in the dome an hour before kickoff. Even heard the national anthem. Can’t tell you last time last happened. Again…. A longgggg time.

Otherwise, I rarely even pay attention to a lot of the other stuff. Too busy wondering how we’ve completed 2 passes through a half.

What I would LOVE is if we had an orange beam in the tunnel that illuminates the smoke with a Orange tint. And Tiny Orange beams above the players heads similar to what the Philadelphia Eagles have. It also doesn't help that Fran runs out of the locker room, the slow walk and build up before they run onto the field is what fans love.
During timeouts has been the same stuff for the last 4 years... its boring, more fan cam would be cool.
Ive said to others a entrance song would be cool, Johnny Cashs "God's gonna cut you down" would be awesome, with everyone stomping to the beat.

Just a lack of tradition really for a program with a storied history. I mean the biggest thing we got is a forced “shoe burning” ceremony that isn’t even a part of the regular season.

Coach Mac and Coach P burned the shoes after the last practice before the last game of the season.

I have suggested some of these before:

1) Move the banner flipping after a win to the Dome. Have a senior band member get the honors. Make it a BIG deal.
2) Light the Dome Orange only after a win. Have a senior player or captain get the honors. Again, make it a BIG deal. Purchase billboards all over central New York that light up Orange after a win.
3) Have more of a buy in for the fans to make it the Loud House. Have signs that they have to touch as they enter that say "Cheer Like a Champion Today" or something similar. Have the public address announcer hype it up.
4) Keep track of how many illegal procedures get caused by the noise. Offer a cheap Dome dog or something else for a certain number.
5) Orange outs only. But not only for fans at the game. Encourage alumni and every one else to wear Orange on game day no matter where they are.
6) At the beginning of the year have a Orange out. If we win then everyone adds another orange piece of clothing for the next game. Keep adding orange clothes until we lose. Can you imagine when we go 6-0 to start a season how many New Yorkers would be decked out in Orange. Take pictures and post them to social media.

Except for the billboards, none of these would cost much. Let's Go Orange.

I can boil it down to one person. "The Legend" Pete Sala

The answer is to incorporate Otto more into the gameday experience. How? I don’t know they can figure that out. But Otto needs more spotlight and involvement in the game day experience.
the answer is to win. or at least be exciting. the rest will follow. it would be interesting to know how many sth are NOT alumni. i agree with mark su would be lost w/o the non alums of which i am one. as well as all those that attend games as "casual" fans . they are very crucial to attendance and atmosphere. we have six seasons tix and started out with individual game tix in archbold days. will be at notre dame game with 6. yes we tailgate.

They used to count the false starts. The students and ottos army absolutely loved it. Then they killed it for whatever reason.

I can assure you that almost all of these ideas and thoughts have been brought up to the athletic department and the in game marketing department.

They have promised to be better and make improvements but I personally have seen nothing.

I will say, the in game marketing department is a very small department with a few college interns at Syracuse. To me that is a huge fail by the university.

Everything is beyond scripted and plays at the same media timeout of every game. They need someone who will adjust with the game flow and be more in tune.

A "vibe conductor" so to speak.

We desperately need a better walk on/run on.

Our marketing team is also beyond terrified to get a penalty and they will bring up the lights and end the music well before the ACC allotted timing.

I encourage those of you on this thread who want to see improvements and changes to game day atmospheres to consider applying for Cuse Fan Council when the applications go live. This is some of the stuff they have talked about over the years. They need more good feedback like this to understand what our Syracuse fans want.

We should adopt a 4th quarter song. Preferably one that nobody else is using...

Maybe we could bring back the "Hey" song if we promise not to use the naughty lyrics?

I have an idea.
Every time we are kicking off, we make a Native American chant while extending our right arm out repetitively, while getting faster and faster until the kicker finally kicks the ball?

Oh wait...

Gary Glitter was a pedo. Leave that one for State Penn.

The same casual local fans that catch heat when the team absolutely blows because we would rather spend our fall weekends doing other activities. I will never had season tickets again for cuse. they are unreliable from a product standpoint. I could give two poops about gameday experience. Except the walkout type item which only would be something if the team was good and if the stadium was easier to get to

I preface this by saying I'm not a chant/tradition guy personally, I'm more of a watch the game guy and yell on 3rd down.

However, to the traditions point: I think the problem is a lot of the organized traditions/chants that are tried just aren't bought into. Not sure if it's a cultural thing (southern schools have way more traditions than any northern school) or the 'event town' someone else mentioned, which I agree with 100-percent.

Credit to West Virginia - country roads is great, but they have the unique benefit of having a popular sing along song mentioning them... Penn State has a white out and 'we are,' wisconsin has one song, Michigan has the Mr. Brightside (which dozens of pro/college stadiums have and act like they invented it), Ohio State 'dots the i' but that's about all I can think of and pretty lame. For Pitt, rutgers, minnesota, BC, Maryland, I legitimately can't think of anything.
