Interesting Look at Our Offense

Sad that they don't even worry about having safety help on the single receiver side. The next wrinkle I'd like to see is fake the hand-off to the back to freeze that safety and look deep to the WR on that side.

Thought this was a good overview of one of our main offensive plays, from a ND blogger.

Inside Zone Read Option with Backside Bubble (a.k.a. The Syracuse Offense)
the bubble should be a third option but I remain unconvinced that it is. why would hunt be so good at reading defensive end cheating inside and so bad at reading defensive backs cheating inside

i think the writer is assuming that we throw bubbles based on a read because that's what other sensible bubble screen throwing spread teams do.

i think SU only asks hunt to make one read and throws the bubble in a pre-meditated, non-read way in an attempt to appear on the surface like a triple option team. somehow we're giving that away though.

the second play of that video in the link looks like a good time to actually throw the bubble

it's such a simple thing to fix, otherwise, I like the offense

the whole game is on youtube!

if you want to go to a specific point in the game, you append #t=xxhxxmxxs where xx is the hours, min, seconds

for example if you want to go to 0 hours 7 minutes 10 seconds into the game

you can use this to point to lots of plays

They did this once vs CMU and Aston had a step ... and dropped it.

I'm not so convinced he's good at reading the DE yet though it's getting better. Vs Nova there were multiple read options where he got the keep/pull wrong.

That said, he is still a young QB and perhaps I (and others) had some unrealistic expectations at where he should be at this point.

I think, perhaps, our reads are sent in from the booth/sideline once they see the defense and we aren't asking Hunt to make presnap reads thus the hurry up and wait approach.

I don't know about that - Lester's interview from last night was telling. He said Hunt was making really good reads in the running game and got them into a handful of huge gains. I think he's doing more than most are giving him credit for...

maybe that's all he's being asked to do. keep vs handoff. i just can't believe his pitch reads are this bad.

I think that's exactly it.

From now on, when I type "IZROWBB" during a game chat, we'll all know what it means. :p

At the least, you can see why the bubble screen is important to the scheme we are running.

If I were defending SU, I would set my defenders up to influence SU to throw the bubble as much as possible. Right now, we just don't have the personnel to make defenses pay for doing this.
you're being swayed by all those times we throw bubble screens when defenders are waiting for it.

if you only throw it when you have the right count of defenders, our personnel would be just fine. like the time lewis got 10 yards. there are way more examples of incorrect decisions by hunt/mcdonald than there are of correct decisions thwarted by poor throws/catches/blocks

I think this is right. It's execution and making the right read. The overall scheme makes sense.

Which is why a new OC needs a bit of time to recruit players that can execute his offense. Personally, I think the test just begins in the third year.

I will say this - as much as we want to see things be more productive, I feel good seeing that there is a consistent plan in place. We are trying to do some specific things. There is an emerging identity. I think that will pay dividends down the road.

Its pretty much the type of offense for which you begged for so long. I know we haven't scored points yet but that is just growing pains for this team. I think McD has done a good job of creating packages for Hunt and it will pay off before the end of the season.

what is your understanding of the first check read?

Beats me. First thing you do is count guys in the box or check if the extra db is cheating to the run. If so throw bubble. If not , read the defensive end. If he crashes in, keep. If not, handoff.

I just don't get why it's so hard to avoid blown up screens. Those are so easy to avoid, you see it before you snap the ball

if i was the D and i saw that every time i lined up in the box a certain way SU throws the bubble screen, then i would line up and jump the route with a safety over the top in case they try to beat it. too many of the bubble screens there are DBs in the WRs face long before he can even get set to make a move.

someone should send this to su and we will be ready and have a new adjustment in place the zone read fake bubble fly

with hunts athleticism I think at some point we will breakout the bud kilmer throwback pass for the touchdown while in the redzone

No easy answers. Good Ds will disguise those looks or look to influence the pre snap reads. After counting the box, the 2nd read is often the playside OLB (is he in flat coverage or cheating toward the twin WRs). Sometimes the OLB will split the difference and the S (not the DBs involved with coverage of the WR at the LOS), will either walk down to the box or cheat out to the WR or play straight up. Sometimes they rotate just before the snap (presumably after the read), or make it look like they are committing pre snap, or they rotate/fly there on the snap, or they play it straight up as per initial alignment. It's a chess game, with some guessing mixed in too. We are told that Hunt is doing well with the correct reads pre snap, and on the zone run options. But it's never as simple as hey, there are 2 blockers and 3 defenders but we decided to throw it there anyway, even though it might look that way.
