Interesting Look at Our Offense

I'm one of those dopes talking about irrelevant safeties. So we will use your Rich Rod quote - who do you think the alley players are that are cheating into the run lanes? In a 4-3, there are 7 in box. If the playside OLB moves from flat coverage to hedge the twin WRs (now 6 in the box), the free SS can still walk down into the box to "cheat" the run. It happens all the time, and ND will do it all night Saturday, and they will still throw bubble screens into what you think is coverage.

Kind of funny that you quote the "bubble screen is given, not taken" because it disproves your other "theory" that the bubble play must being called b/c, unlike you, the coaches at SU can't count, and therefore are calling the play just to call the play.

Give it a rest.
How in the world does a Rich Rodriguez quote disprove something that I think George McDonald might be doing?

If the safety cheats in the box, the qb will count that player as being... wait for it... in the box.

I think you want numbers 1st - best chance for a good gain (like Maryland did to us). But 3 on 3 isn't that horrible if the defenders are off the line by 5-8 yds (and if your WR are good blockers). As we've talked about - in this offense you need to throw it a few times a game to set up other elements - and if you can get 4-7 yds a pop, you do it. Problem is we are averaging 2-3 yards (at best).

Somethings def broken about the play. Here's to hoping they figured it out this week.

Well, we are throwing bubbles to Custis and Lewis and I think that's definitely something that's broken. The only play Custis should be catching behind the line is a TE throwback with a couple of OL leaking out to lead the way.

The one to Erv last week could be a step forward in that they tried to get a player moving instead of standing and waiting - although as the other thread showed, the result was a comical disaster and was pretty much telegraphed by the no back set. Most teams that use the play successfully are throwing different wrinkles that SU hasn't shown, so we'll see what adjustments are made.

Disagree. In the CMU game they threw half of the screens to the RB on the move, but behind the line. They also run multiple fakes out of that same formation (in effect a play action).

They get a lot out of the set - just the screen is the element that sucks. The HB dive or zone read out of killed MD last weekend.

My position is that if that play got better (4-7yds) - the offense could take a leap. Sadly - there are no signs of that so far...

Lewis is the only guy who has gotten anything out of that play consistently.
