IPF

Some things I don't feel comfortable saying because I've only heard from one person, but here are a couple of things I've heard from multiple places:

-one (non-revenue/women's) sport went over budget by six figures one year. coaching staff is still in place and still spending like they are printing money
- the reason the Olympic sports get a lot of funding is that DG gets a bonus based on the Director's Cup standing. Sports that would get SU the most points in those contests get generous funding- especially relative to other schools in their respective sport(s)

In my opinion, football takes the biggest hit as a result of some of these financial "decisions".

Not surprised since that is how almost every school does it.

backwards thinking that keeps us in the dark. And its not how other schools do it. Maybe Ithaca but not BCS level schools. SU has the money.

It's been a disaster. That's why there have been a number of financial reviews and a look at all the books.

The problem is the school plundered athletic revenues when the athletic department was doing well, and we fell way behind in the arms race. Now it's a catch-22 - the football program isn't going to do well enough to support the non-revenue sports if the team doesn't perform better, the team can't perform better without better athletes, we need better facilities to compete for better athletes...but we need the football program to do better to generate the revenues/donations needed for the facilities.

I get what you're saying about how other schools fund raise for facilities - but Syracuse needs to commit to a different short term model or accept that mediocrity is about the best they can hope for. It feels like the administration is willing to accept mediocrity while cashing ACC checks for as long as they can, while hoping a miracle happens and somehow the football program gets better through magic.

I've said multiple times I think college football has passed SU by, and we'll be fighting to stay out of the ACC basement most years...feeling like my pessimism is very justified right now.

this is awful news. I mean really bad. Hope they can get that IPF built ASAP! They need it badly to compete

No IPF...

Then I want my money back. (Granted it wasn't much, but more was on the way, but I donated to show I care), I am not even an alum, but still love the university.

I have been showing everyone in the B1G that us fans do care, that we will donate, and that in fact we broke ground for an IPF to try and step up with the better teams. I even emailed all those pics of the "zipper".

This post on the news of no IPF anytime soon has just hit a sore spot with me.

I feel sorry for the student athletes that are getting lied to and the student athletes that have been busting their ass to help get this thing going. Those seniors that sat through the groundbreaking...wow..I wonder what they think now?

I usually do not rant, but this and the loss today probably put me over the edge, and for that I am sorry.

I will ban myself now.....smdh.

I think this story hits a sore spot more than the pathetic egg we laid on the field today and rightfully so.

Yes, Athletics has been bleeding money and getting bailed out by campus. The well is closed...for now at least.

As Anomander said, the Olympic coaches are getting paid...and I have heard about some other things that would make people nuts.
Gross is gone once the new Chancellor is in place. IMO.

I can't see how he's retained if the finances have been as poorly managed as some of the Olympic coachs' salaries would suggest.

Yes it is how most do it. We've had these threads every six months it seems with articles linked. State monies, several big donations or a singular huge donation like the Oregon's get.

They are probably thinking its nobody's d@mn business what they spend their money on.

Then don't cry about no IPF. We didn't even upgrade the lockers and offices till donations hit a certain level. It's how it works. SU is an academic institution.

Breaking ground and then stopping is worse than not even starting - this just created (in reality, exacerbated...) a major credibility issue for the university/athletic dept in my mind. That lack of credibility and transparency almost certainly is a factor that discourages donations.

let me just put it out there. WOMENS LAX. A

more importantly who the cares about WOMENS LAX?

Disgusting. I haven't been more pi$$ed off about something regarding Syracuse sports in my life then this BS.

My question now is where is my money going?

I agree with that. I have no idea why they did the ground breaking charade if they weren't at the donation level that gave them confidence to start building. That was just real dumb.

We'll soon see. The new guy starts in January which is before Cantors contract was up. I also believe Cantor is already gone and someone is acting till January.

Can anyone provide anymore details? How much money has been raised? How much more money needs to be raised before construction can begin? What type of delay are we talking about? A few months or years? This is really worrisome to the commitment to the football program? AAC teams and MAC teams already have an IPF...This is just the FN cherry on top of a shitty day...

Not to mention there would be no Olympic sports if there wasn't football or basketball? How bout be tie the good doc's bonus to the number of wins the football team gets?

Same here. I donated specifically for the IPF. It's called Promissory Estoppel. They are in breach of fulfilling their promise.

it's all top secret . it's like dealing with the CIA trying to get any information like that.

the whole ground breaking BS ticks me off even more. i really want to know what's going to be done with our donations now. if this is going to be some extended delay like i assume it is there should be some answers.

funny they found a way to build the Melo Center without being fully funded. weird how that works

I don't think they have much. It would help if they could get someone to name the place after. After seeing only 21,000 people in the stands today, I doubt the higher ups see it as a good investment. This years total bust in attendance is not going to help the athletic department's finances. 21,000 actual people in the seats today for a team looking to be bowl eligible is a really pathetic showing for this community. All the people leaving the Dome today were shaking their heads over the play calling. Three times in the fourth quarter SU had the ball at mid field and couldn't come up with three lousy points. I feel bad for coach Shafer because these kids are busting their butts.

i understand your point of view, but if they are going to look at it that way then we might as well fold the program, or move it down to the SUNYAC level. Why not look at the 21k and say this used to be a once proud program what can we do to get it back to where it rightly belongs? Show the community/alumni that you are behind your program and give people something to look forward to. that train of thought will just alienate the few die hards they have left. i know i am steaming over this, same with the people i get tickets with.

That's a catch 22? U can't get a good product on the field without getting good recruits and it will be awful hard to get good recruits without solid facilities? I know we'll never be Oregon but when Northern Illinois, UCF (MAC & AAC) teams have them(IPF) and can afford them were in for an uphill battle...

Nobody said fully funded. The Melo Center had more than enough up front donations to assure SU to start and that more would come in. I'm not saying every athletic project is like this but many will get started when the donations reach 50%. Then they'll usually accept the risk on the rest. In the end, I'm not sure SU put a penny into the Melo Center. Maybe they bought the basketballs there.

The Melo Center is still not paid for! Without Melo's donation, it wouldn't have happened.
