It is easy to say this move to the ACC is great, because for important reasons it is.

Anyway, in the spirit of bolstering Kaiser's ego by floating him some softballs, here is what I do not like about the move. Note that is "about the move" and not "the move".

  • I am a 25 year fan of the BE, it is kind of hard to just turn that off. I was chatting with a guy from work today about this. He's from Providence. We reminisced about the old timers, the Carneseccas, Thompsons, all those guys. All that is gone.
  • "Beasts of the East", the "BIG East", that meant something, now it doesn't.
  • I hate that the BBall onlies ran this conference into the ground. How could you look at the changing landscape and not carve out a bball only vs football/bball split? Hell, expand the bball only side if you have to. Adding Villanova for football what a dang joke.
  • I have a 20 something year hatred of the ACC, it is impossible to switch that to love
These top 4 points are it. The rest below are just some ramblings.
  • I will get crucified for this, but VT and BC fairly well dominated the ACC immediately post move. Strangely, Miami continued to suck. Sprinkled in with some struggles, the Big East survived, if not thrived, in on-field terms, relative to the ACC, w/out those teams. Imagine if they had never left? We had a strong hand, but apparently Swofford had pictures of all of us with hookers. He told everyone the ship was sinking, and they jumped off.
  • I hate the we win by losing mentality of all of this. It is weak.
  • I am with JB. In 10 years, I wonder if we'll be questioning why we did this?
  • BC sucks more than ever. How much of that is related to having been in the ACC?
  • We are now at the dinner table, but who decides where we sit and what is for dinner?
There seems to be a bit of a mob/magic bullet mentality about this that I find a bit odd. Yes, we are going to get some more money. But so is Pitt, so is UConn, and whomever else. And our competition in-conference will all have that money as well. And every team in every other super conference will have their new shares of their new pies. Subtract the huge exit fees. So, what have we all gained? Are we magically now a better team? Or are we going to end up a bottom feeder like BC? What happens if WVU and TCU stay in the BE and pick up some Big12 leftovers?

There is a lot to like about the move. See 98 out of 100 posts. There's no need to repeat all that. I'm a liberal, so I am pretty excited at the prospect of getting free ACC money that I have not earned. Yay socialism! On a serious note, the name value of our opponents just took a big step up. This is good news for season ticket holders back in the Cuse. I hope Gross does not use this opportunity to book half our home contests at the Meadowlands. Someone check the fine print.

We had a strong hand, but apparently Swofford had pictures of all of us with hookers. He told everyone the ship was sinking, and they jumped off. It's too bad that Pitt, WVU and BC couldn't get their act together in the late 90's. It's too bad Rutgers was Rutgers and Temple was Temple. It's too bad that SU dropped off after McNabb. If those schools had been at their mid-2000's levels with SU maintaining its program, then the Big East could have been a really solid football conference. Still, it will be nice to be grouped with schools who all have the same interests and the equal revenue will be nice.
  • BC sucks more than ever. How much of that is related to having been in the ACC? BC really has a lot of ups and downs in football and basketball. BC basketball had five years of 11 or fewer wins between 1990 and 2000. Their football team won between 4 and 9 games in the BE. This is the only year they seem to be struggling in the ACC, and they've been decimated by injuries. Spaziani was a horrible and lazy hire though.
  • We are now at the dinner table, but who decides where we sit and what is for dinner? We get to eat and we wont starve.
There seems to be a bit of a mob/magic bullet mentality about this that I find a bit odd. Yes, we are going to get some more money. But so is Pitt, so is UConn, and whomever else. Look at the strides the entire athletic department has made with the minimal money we have. People have really overlooked how much better our olympic sports have gotten since Gross and Cantor took over. I'm sure I am in the minority, but having a comprehensive athletic department where all of our teams are given a chance to win had to have made Syracuse more attractive to other conferences to some minor extent. And our competition in-conference will all have that money as well. And every team in every other super conference will have their new shares of their new pies. Subtract the huge exit fees. So, what have we all gained? A secure and stable future. The rest is up to our coaches and athletes. Are we magically now a better team? No. Or are we going to end up a bottom feeder like BC? BC was never more than a middling basketball program. It had a few decent years sprinkled among a lot of awful years. They're just reverting back to their norm. Other than this year they have been consistently average to great in the ACC, much better than they ever were in the Big East. What happens if WVU and TCU stay in the BE and pick up some Big12 leftovers? They will be the little brother midwest conference, we will be the major northeast/mid Atlantic conference and little brother in the southeast.

It's easy to grin when your ship comes in,
And you've got the stock market beat.
But the man worthwhile is the man who can smile,
When his shorts are too tight in the seat.

In my humble opinion, Big East football really died in the 2003 expansion. Sure we chugged along for a few more years, but the idea of a Northeastern football conference died that day.

As for hoops, I firmly believe that we will all look back and say that 2003-2012 were the TRUE glory years of Big East Basketball. I've never been as happy a basketball fan as I have been in this conference...at this time.

The quantity and quality of success that we've all had will not be duplicated again. This will be missed.

"Oh, this your wife, huh? A lovely lady. Hey baby, you must've been something before electricity."

BC stinks right now. It has nothing to do with the move to the ACC, it has to do with hiring Spaziani. A nice guy who is a terrible hc.

In my opinion, the denise of the Big Esat always rated with the inability of the football schools to tell the hoops only crowd it was time to split. All of us stood by while the gang in Providence ran the show. Mike T had the vision of a blind man. It is a lot of wouldas and shouldas. It is all going to work out now, as the ACC is going to be what the Big East Football schools could have done. Lets all hope the new ESPN contract is huge on per team basis which will keep everyone together.

I maintain that all of these schools cannot play a high level of football at the same time. Best case, they are all just mediocre, like today. Not enough talent to go around in the area. Put UConn and Rutgers in the Big East12CUSAMWC, and watch how our recruiting picks up.

The goal is to be good enough to win this league, not to stay at the same level as the also ran group.

I agree. Big East basketball from the most recent expansion until now has exploded. I missed the 80's glory days, but the Big East was pretty mediocre in the 90s with only 2 Final Four appearances. I'm excited for the ACC, but from 2005-06 to now the Big East has been a lot of fun. Hopefully UConn will join us and we can force the ACC and Tobacco Road to adapt to our culture and some of our traditions rather than leaving them all behind.

THIS MOVE TO THE ACC IS GREAT!

Edit: 1 of 98 out of 100 posts :p

That's a good point.

The comparison is not to the old days. it's to what we would be left with if we stayed. The ACC would have just taken Connecticut, Rutgers and Wrest Viringia instead of us. We would have been the last of the original Big East Football conference schools still in it. Our "rivals" would have been Cincinnati, Louisiville, South Florida and TCU, all of whom would have looked to go elsewhere. The Big East would have made overtures stoward the remanants of the Big 12 but the Big 10 will vacumn them up.

The good thing about moving to a conference that you hate, is that you already hate all your new opponents. F them all.

also, the more I think about it, if the Cuse stopped playing Gtown, Gtown would fade away into irrelevance: a fitting ending. Sort of warming to the idea.

In five years, Georgetown (sucks) will be playing all of its games in that high school gym they have on campus. Without us, who's going to buy tickets at Verizon Center?

BC was a middle of the pack at best school in an 8 team big east. They IMPROVED when they moved to the ACC to the point where they were in an ACC championship game in a 12 team conference one season and were usually challenging for a spot in the championship game in the other seasons. Their current suckiness is due to their constant coaching changes in recent years, not their conference affiliation.

Since bolting for the ACC, Miami has gone 9-3, 9-3, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, 9-4, 7-6...And they just evened their record at 1-1 this season with a throttling of Ohio state.

Are they a top-5 program like back in the 1980's and early to mid 90's? No.

But I only wish Syracuse "continued to suck" that much over the past 7 years.

Why is that gone? you're reminiscing about things from the past that aren't there currently. what's any different?

You scratched my anchor.

Big East football was doomed the day Penn State applied to the BiG.

You could go back even further and say football was doomed when JoePa demanded unreasonable tribute to be part of his proposed all-sports conference.
