The reasons D-1 schools are acting they way they are, and why certain schools are more attractive than others is in the attached files.

Dollars and cents.

The file shows the combined revenue from football and basketball for 2010.

Texas doesn't need to go anywhere. Speculation that their motivation is about control in and of itself is ridiculous. It's about maximizing revenues.

Same with ND. As long as it can print money, it's not going anywhere. The only reason they would join a confernece is if it can't put together a decent schedule as an independent. That's it.

Now here's the good news for SU. Combined revenue in 2010 in the BE of $37.8M puts it in 34th place out of 120 schools. It's a big reason why SU, and similarly Pitt, were asked to join the ACC and not Rutgers and Uconn. It's wasn't about punishment, it was about dollars.

Between just the increased TV money from the ACC and the Meadowlands check, SU would be in the top 25 and close to joining the $50M club after it joins the ACC. At that point SU will start having substantial net income to start plowing back into facilities.

We could further maximize our revenue if we played 2 games a year there.

Now you're just being ridiculous. But you know that.

What would be the difference? Show me another team that does what we have done. We are 34th of 120 teams. What is wrong about that? Oh, we need even more money so lets move the biggest draws to the Meadowlands for 2 decades AND increase donations and ticket prices. Why doesn't SU at least be be honest with the fans then?

It's a minor point, I don't want you're pet peeve hijacking the thread. Right now SU is netting a couple of million. That's not going to get it done. The ACC move is going to be the big bump. But a seven figure check that essentially goes right to the bottomline is substantial.

VT has played made for TV matchups that would otherwise be home games or not happen in DC. I think OU played a game in Dallas. UGA played Boise in Atlanta. It's not the end of the world.

None of them signed up for 14 games over 2 decades which were likely to be the top 14 OOC games. Stop acting like what we are doing is common place.

The Buffalo / Toronto Bills! But nobody's happy about it.

Bees, knowing that you have connections inside the programs I have wondered if you ever shared your strong feelings on this with those on the hill, and if so what was their response?

Knowing people doesn't mean being able to influence them. But, I will say many many years ago (as a few very long timers will attest), we were frustrated about the basketball atmosphere in the Dome and I sent them my infamous "6 point plan". If I recall correctly they implemented 5 if not all 6 of them. Not all at once and not necessarily because I suggested them...but still, I like to think so. :)

And, given the size of their home arena, how does Duke do $28M (#2 in the nation)?

Has to be TV and NCAA $$$$.

Well, neither OU or Texas play their biggest game in their home stadiums. Neither did Alabama and Auburn until recently. Or Florida and Georgia for that matter.

The first post is NOT about this stupid game you're fixated on.

Where is this data from?

Not for nothing, but I don't believe anything I see when it comes to athletics revenue.

Thanks. I bet that sixth point that didn't get implemented was a doozy.

Was wondering if they know what they are doing to the fans or if the fact that there is much more money involved they feel it is worth the trade off.

FWIW, that data shows us having more revenue than Oregon.

I find that...improbable.

I'm trying to remember what the 6 were. Has to be 20 years ago. I think some were student seating, benches, TV cameras, not sure though. Maybe Cherie will remember, I know she was around the boards then.

Exactly, 100% spot on. The fact diehard local fans especially those as well connected as GO can just brush this off is dumbfounding. What other major D1 program schedules all there top OOC games 4+ hours from there campus????? Once gross leaves for USC I hope the new AD gets a clue and scraps this deal.

I was told the ribbon boards would be added this year and that the jumbotron at the bball end would be replaced with a larger, HD one as well. That will be nice but I wonder if money could be better spent elsewhere.

Its like getting a membership to the jelly of the month club instead of your Christmas bonus when you already spent the money on a pool.

I know its two months past the season but this situation makes me think of that movie.

Im a fan of the NYC games. I think that when Doc entered into the deal we were still planning on staying in the Big East. Not sure if given the ACC deal he would have signed up for 14 games. Still if we do well we have a good chance of bringing down state fans to Syracuse for games. This is good for recruiting, Good for exposure and good for our fan base. I see nothing wrong with this

Not sure what site the linked PDF is coming from, but the data is looking at basically 2 pieces of data reported to the OPE and can be found on the Equity in Athletics site of OPE.

Institutions report things differently to the US Department of Education and the form actually allows for this flexibility. Like Oregon has close to $52 million in "other revenue" whereas Syracuse only reports between $3-4 million in this category.

The site itself says the following:

Please note that valid comparisons of athletics data are possible only with study and analysis of the conditions affecting each institution.

Not that the OP knew any of this, they may have just found that PDF at one site and linked it assuming it was accurate data (which it is, in and of itself) but due to differing philosophies on where to report certain revenue, is not useful for comparing two pieces of data within the entire set. If one has to use the site's data the better starting point is looking at Grand Total of Revenue and Grand Total of Expenses and then be wary of the "other" revenue since some of it may be athletics donation (perhaps in Oregon's case) while for others it may be operating $$$ borrowed from the university (Rutgers, possibly SU) to get the books to balance so to speak.

Cheers,
Neil

I would just like to ask a few simple questions:

1) Where is SU in terms of football facilities on that list?
2) Where does SU stand in terms of donations from alumni on that list?

My guess is fairly low.

In order to compete with the "big boys" (and not saying we even can, after getting the influx of $$), you need money. And if the money isn't coming from sources that it typically comes from (donations, ticket revenue, etc.), then a department needs to think outside the box.

I understand the frustration of all SU fans that live in the Syracuse area, with most if not all of the top non-conference games most likely being played in the NY/NJ area. But in order to fix the problems within the program, at least IMO, you need to start at the root of the problem and I think most would agree that facilities and amenities are high on the list.

While I'm not totally thrilled about the fact we won't play high-quality games at the Dome (at least not in the near future), I understand why it's being done.
