The more I think about Shafer's press conference, the more annoyed I get. I just watched College Gameday do a story on a man who had season tix with his father, grew up watching Ole Miss with him and rooting for the team became part of their father-son bond.

Well now, his father has passed away and his final words are basically "it's more than football, it's a way we talk to the dead".

Thinking right now, and thankfully my father is still alive, that some of my most cherished father-son moments involve Syracuse. Going to the Final 4 in Atlanta, flying up to MetLife for ND, McNabb's throwback at home, numerous Basketball games, never mind all the games watched together on tv.

To come out and make the statements he made are unacceptable. He would be fired on the spot had he been the coach of an SEC school.

Yea, it's just football. It's also much, much more and we as fans should demand more.

lol. That was what I was thinking last night. What if he were the coach of an SEC school and made those comments. The fans would have dragged him out of his house last night and shown him the state line. Nobody would have had to fire him. He just would have been "removed" from the area in the middle of the night. Never to be heard from again.

Also my mom passed away this summer. She was a '49 SU grad. And it was our yearly trips on the NYS thruway to Syracuse to see a football game that ultimately brought me to SU, and was the seeds for my love of SU sports. So, yes. This was insulting in that light.

In the grand scheme of life, no it's not a huge deal, it is in fact just a football game but that football game, that school, still means more to many people than just a team we cheer for. I'll get angry about the game and when I talk about how bad we were get aggravated but I still went out last night, I still have plans for later today, I still have family, friends and work to think about. It's not my job to make sure this team is competitive though, I can have that view, I'm not the coach of this team. I don't get paid millions to be the team that can create moments for families to bond over or allow someone to escape for a few hours.

Its not important in the greater scheme of things. But We have a deep passion for su football and for alot of us it hurts when we put this kind of product out there. So Mr hardnose you need to figure things out fast.

What it comes down to is Coach Shafer has perspective. The problem is you don't want your coach to have perspective.

He needs to produce on the field. In some gov't sector jobs, perspective is enough, but not in college sports. He should be able to field a competitive team. That's the perspective he needs to understand and voice.

People who make 7 figures per year to coach a sport shouldn't tell people to have perspective when people question the crappy results that their team is experiencing.

I mean I agree that this country is way too football obsessed (myself included), but a highly paid football coach is the last guy I want telling me about it.

Damn right I don't. I want a coach obsessed with winning. Not a bleeding heart.

I've told some friends about what Shafer said and they all jaw dropped and said if Mark Richt pulled that, he'd be out of a job before he could leave the podium.
