It's Official: It’s GMac

Email from Chancellor-elect Haynie and Blair about welcoming back GMac and pointing out that the transfer portal opens in two weeks and today, on giving day, to donate to help him rebuild the program. He uses Gerry's #3 and 20 years since he graduated as a giving point. It is very creative. You can gice $3 in honor of his retired number, $20 for the 20 years since he graduated, or $2,003 to honor the championship. And then says the gift sends a message to Gerry, to recruits and to the entire basketball world.

It may be the best marketing letter I have received from SU. And let's be real. I never had a Chancellor ask me to donate to athletics specifically.

I posted a link to the letter in the giving day post pinned on top.

People can try and spin it all they want but at the end of the day Gerry was the cheaper option so that's what they went with.

It can still end up being a better hire.

But it was and always will be money.

All I will say now that it’s officially official, he cannot have a Hofstra type loss next season and needs a win in Vegas. Fan sentiment will turn quick
I don’t see him having a Hofstra kind of loss, he is an intense dude who won’t let players slack. Vegas? Well, let’s see what the roster looks like and if we draw a muderers row all three games like this year

I don’t think it’s the salary, it’s the NIL. And the influence of Boeheim

It’s not about knowing sets. It’s about having a system and a vision and knowing how to teach it and getting your players to buy in. Read about Schertz and Hodgson. We’ve been discussing them for months. I want someone who has proven that as a coach already, and they have both done it. (Also Hodge is a much better proven recruiter than Gmac.). What vision has Gmac shown? Maybe he’ll develop it but all I see and hear is the same tired stuff Red tried to sell. I want to win national titles. You have to have a visionary coach to do that. We had a chance to hire one of them, and instead we went with a family hire.
Gmac is the coach, our coach, embrace it. Hodgson is at Providence, Schertz is at Stl.

i hope people realize todays giving doesn't help gmac. it's not NIL. it's to help offset some of the $20.5m revenue share su has committed to spend.

i thinks its sad that we no longer have a collective for basketball nil. hopefully it gets corrected soon.

and i do support donating today. just know its not nil. i'll be donating to a couple initiatives including whitman and athletics.

I don't see a quote from JW about this hire. Is he purposely staying in the background to let BB be front and center?

Is JB going to do another round of radio shows podcasts about this hire?

The existing players, according to the new rules, can enter the portal 5 days after a coaching chance when the new coach is announced. So they can enter the portal before the regular portal opens...so if GMac wants to keep any of them the clock is ticking there too.

I know nothing and my opinion is as worthless as everyone else's (not named Brian Blair). That being said, once Gerry became a viable candidate, I think it was always going to be extremely difficult not to hire him.

I suspect he crossed the viability threshold when Sienna won the MAAC tourney. Once people could point to him taking a 4-win team to a conference title in 2 seasons, there was going to be a ton of momentum behind his candidacy from SU donors.

In my mind, the only thing that could have derailed that was luring an established, winning, current P5 coach to SU. And honestly, SU would never spend the money to hire a candidate with those qualifications. Schertz was on the fringe of that but not P5 obviously.

I have concerns about Gerry as HC, but I love the renewed energy that he'll bring to the program and us fans. I hope that all the donors who promised to open their wallets for him follow through.

We need about $8 million in NIL to pair with the $4 million in direct compensation from SU. Hitting that number is the most important thing necessary to turning things around starting this coming season. Blair's statement made that crystal clear.

It's been a miserable past couple years for SU hoops. Let's go Gerry, crush the offseason.
Echoing this. Whether people want to believe it or not the deck has been stacked against us (and a ton of other programs) and the game is rigged.

Coaches we can't dream of affording are being given 20 million dollar rosters, ZERO mid-majors making the Sweet 16, and living in the ACC where we are playing at 9PM on Tuesdays against teams no one cares about playing...

Gmac brings that underdog mentality that won us a Natty and Big East tournaments and then 2 decades later he did the same thing *almost with Sienna and Duke.

Autry's Orange Standard crap reeked of we belong and we don't right now. Nationally no one thinks we belong and neither does our fanbase right now.

Print up some UNDERRATED and 10 E*fing Games Shirts and let's get after it.

His marketability is off the charts. There is zero question of that.

In a dream scenario where he has us battling Duke every year for top of the ACC, the Scheyer vs GMac friendly rivalry as the new version of JB vs K we got only for certain years due to our struggles definitely is intriguing.

Step 1 win and use every ounce of that nostalgia to raise more money. Step 2, accelerate back to being a power again. Step 1 is of course a monster in its own right..

JW quote is right below Blair's in the official Cuse release

From your lips...

I feel good for the fans that are excited for this.

I am not.

Very concerned that this shows us we've learned nothing. Having a new chancellor and a new AD is meaningless. Syracuse operates in a certain way and has certain expectations for basketball that has proven to be ineffective for a decade plus now, and we're committed to it
the past "family hires" didnt fail bc they were family hires

they failed because they werent competent

i believe gmac is competent

is he competing for national titles good? idk...but few are

i 100% beleive he will have cuse in the ncaat at the bare minimum...which, given the last 10 years, is all we can really ask for

i dont know how anyone can truly be certain of who will be title caliber...its a crapshoot...all you can ask for is competitiveness and being in the conversation...i believe gmac provides that.

i get the distrust of anyone associated with JB...he tarnished his legacy the last few years and then autry hurt it way more...but i think that gmac doing what he did with siena...proves he has what it takes.. he did better than red did with way less resources.

think about it: gmac outperformed red despite being at a 16 seed level school and having way less NIL...now with SU behind him, I truly beleive gmac will kill it in orange...the guy is a WINNER. PERIOD.

Sorry if this has been posted , have they announced the introduction/ opening press conference ?
