Jakhari Williams

I think yall are forgetting how good of a QB Jakhari is

For awhile he was pushing for the #2 QB on the team as true freshman

And I can’t fully remember but I don’t think he enrolled early, could be wrong tho.

If there is a very good 1 year portal qb out there that is sure fire NFL player we can grab, we will grab them. If not I will not be surprised to see the Jakhari era start at Cuse and I don’t think any of us will be upset by it.

Agreed, I don't think we'll be going the portal route unless it's more to add depth to the room and an insurance play. I think we're better off using NIL money in the portal to sure up other positions of need.

The advantage of the offense we have right now is that we are doing a ton of pre-snap read plays. So many short quick throws. Less for the QB to digest and less for the oline to do.

When you start more mid-deep passes you have more post snap stuff to digest and better blocking.

Only the coaches know how well the other QBs are doing in reading the D. It has to help that we have the QB communication thing going on now as well since we don't really go all that fast

I'm not forgetting as much as I can't say I've ever known for sure how good he is.

Is there a chance of retention risk/inability to get skill talent infusions out of the portal if Williams is positioned as the guy next season?

I think there's risk to rolling with Williams. If he's the choice I take that as a good sign. That said, it would really help if something happens like he does start the bowl and has a great game.

Starting the season against Tennessee on a neutral field is a baptism by fire.

I think it's his job. I do believe we bring in another QB but not as the anointed starter.

I have no inside knowledge of what is being said about Jakhari. But this would surprise me quite a bit. Pushing for QB2 is not necessarily a monumental task with our QB depth. He is a true freshman though so that part of it does mean something I guess. As fans we have seen nothing that lets us know he is capable of being a starter. You can't garner much of anything from warmups and the few pre season clips we saw. And Scout team players of the week mean very little regarding how he will turn out, considering the list of guys that also are winning that award. Unless you think the likes of Jordan Montanez, Nick Armantano and Stan Modo are likely to turn into solid starters in the ACC. For Fran to roll with a redshirt freshman as your #1 starting QB with limited experience and depth behind it, Jakhari is going to have to have shown an awful lot. If he's absolutely killing it then it has been pretty under wraps and you would think we would have heard a bit more about him in the gossip department.

Now if he looks awesome in all of the pre bowl practices when getting a bunch of reps and balls out in the bowl game then I can see us possibly rolling with Jakhari. Otherwise i'm getting a 1 year starting caliber QB in the portal again as Its too risky not to. I mean after Jakhari we have Michael Johnson and a true freshman in Carney. And unless he looks amazing in the bowl, we shouldn't have a problem keeping Jakahari if we bring in a 1 year guy. He should know he has a good oportunity to start the following year as a Soph and the ability to compete for the job as a RS Frosh. Is he really going to get a better opportunity than that elsewhere? We need to win as many games as we can next year despite the tough schedule. We can't have a disastrous season. We have to keep up the optimistic outlook of what Fran is doing. You have to win as many games as you can every year.

And actually if he doesn't look very good in the bowl, I strongly consider bringing in a 2 year starter type of guy.

Frank Fran knows we need good completion at every position. We have to play and plan to get the best QB you can every year. You don't owe guys any starting opportunity, especially ones who haven't displayed anything in a game yet. They have to earn it and win that PT. We bring in the best QB we can. Now if Jakhari looks like he's great in a bowl game, maybe the best QB we can pick up isn't a stud and is more of a depth QB as he knows he'll have to compete more. But right now at this moment I say we're bringing in a starter until Jakhari shows us differently.

I trust Frank.

Especially because he knows we need good completion at every position.

Been there Cbus, Great post though. I think Jakhari needs to prove he’s the guy. If we bring in someone and he beats him out…outstanding. Next year is tough and I don’t mind letting him cut his teeth on that schedule. But we can always look to improve and if there is a stud out there like KM that we can get, bring him in and let them compete.

He was pushing for #2 after just two weeks on the team.

He wasn’t there for all of spring ball etc like some of our other true freshman.

He has had this entire season to sit behind a remarkable leader in Kyle McCord and learn how to break down film etc.

The point is, he will have a WHOLE spring ball season and training camp to be ready to start by next season.

There is a reason that Fran didn’t run him off and kept his commitment. That also is extremely telling.

As I said, if there is a absolute stud QB out there that’s basically NFL ready and we think we can grab, we won’t be going for QB as Fran is pretty happy with his QB room and also doesn’t like a deep QB room.

As you remember a lot of people freaked out about this season with really only running with McCord and for Coach Brown it worked out pretty well.

As pointed out by Richmondcuse there are other areas where coach feels need to be filled and NIL can be spent

Linemen are expensive and we need some while we develop the young guys we are bringing in.

To be clear, I'm not saying Jakhari isn't going to be good. He very well may be great a bit later in his career or maybe it is this year. It could turn out like you say, but I don't think we know much for sure until the staff gets a better read of what he can do over the next couple months of bowl prep and likely bowl game. And even if he does look really good, its certainly more risky going into 2025 than we had this season having an excellent known commodity in McCord.

Has Fran said he doesn't like a deep QB room? I certainly think its better when the team knows there is a clear pecking order but a deep QB room seems like a positive to me. Especially when the good depth is just younger.

I will also add, capitalizing on bringing in QB talent immediately after a great passing season with McCord seems like a good idea timing wise. If Jakhari is that good he'll win out. Don't like putting all our eggs in one basket if its not proven.

Yeah, I would think "we brought in a guy for one year and he rewrote our record book" is a pretty strong pitch.
