Coach said yesterday they were more interested in HS players than portal going forward. I got the feeling he isn’t looking to get a big time QB
Clemson strategy only works if you get top 10 hs recruits.

I don't understand how anyone can see a HS recruiting class with 30 incoming players and think "I think Cuse is going to big time players in the portal every year." Filling a quarter of your roster with freshman for 2025 is a development plan, not a win now plan.

Fran was clear when he was hired that HS recruiting and developing guys over time is how you win here. We just needed the portal to help turn over the roster more and have a good first year. He still added a ton of HS guys last year, and I expect you'll see a lot more redshirt freshman and young sophomores playing next year. They're slowly taking over the two deep and on the field.

Looking forward to it!

That's why I'm excited for the bowl game. Assuming quite a few good players sit out (McCord/OG for starters) you get the competition of the young guys making their case for next season. It essentially starts with the bowl.

We are going to have to temper expectations a bit given next year's schedule. No sense bringing in high priced transfers for a year when the deck is stacked against us. Save that dry powder to keep your youngsters or to strike the portal in the future when we are only a few guys away from being top of the ACC.

If you dig into the roster the portal needs aren’t as big as they were last year. WR, DL, OL, RB is crowded and returns nearly everyone. You can always upgrade OL so a center and tackle are always on the table. As is a QB.

IMO we should upgrade the CB position and we badly need linebackers. Like Upperdeck just mentioned the right 3-5 portal kids in key spots is all we need.

At LB we lose Wax, (Diggs) and Barron, I assume a kid or two to the portal. We have 1 HS kid committed. I think we need a starting MLB out of the portal.

I like having him around for leadership though. McCord mentioned Johnson Jr in an interview with Axe, saying how helpful he's been mentoring Jakhari as someone who's been around a lot of college football.
The leadership part is fine. I just hope the plan was never to be him starting in 2025.

Feels like Williams is going to be the starter. Maybe Carney pushes him a little bit. I don't see Johnson Jr as starter quality.

Now that Jakhari is taking snaps with the 2s, and being lauded by Fran for his effort, my guess is that MJ Jr stays on the break glass in case of emergency list.
Which is exactly the scenario it should be. Let Luke develop, MJ as backup, Jakhari as starter.

If an obvious starter portal QB that Fran has a strong connection with becomes available, kick the tires but I'm cool with the above.

Linebacker and safety are huge portal needs.

True enough but we have a great many kids who got playing time this year. I think we are going to be a lot stronger than many think. Correct me if I am off base, but I don't remember when we have had so many good freshmen on the 2 deep, especially on defense.

Let's face it, Kyle was probably a one-off for us. Fran had a long-term relationship and JW worked the NIL coffers to make it happen. There aren't that many situations like that anywhere - we were fortunate the moon, sun and stars all aligned. Fortunately, he has recruited the strongest QB class since Donny Mac dined alone.

Now, as a universal disclaimer, Coach Fran shocked us all in his first year and I am prepared to believe anything when it comes to his recruiting chops.
