JB is the man. But let's rank your choice of potential successors

Think it needs to be someone that’s already a head coach. If we followed the original plan and were humming along with our standard I would’ve been cool handing the keys to Hop. But now we’re in too rough of shape to hand it off to someone that’s never been a head coach.

There’s a chance getting someone in that would fulfill all duties of the head coach (I.e. put effort into recruiting) and getting the elephant in the room of when is jimmy retiring would help our recruiting immensely. But I’m not too optimistic and hope we don’t approach it in the same way we do the portal - familiarity only.

I don't have a name to throw out there to chew on but certainly think Miller would drive ticket sales and some excitement. I also think some are underestimating our AD and what he would be willing to do. I don't think he is dropping 6 million on anyone but I would bet he will be willing to put some nice money on the table for the right guy. If we end up going in house give me Red and some new coaches on the bench. Nothing personal to Grif and GMAC but this is a reboot and new blood has to come in from somewhere to change the culture, rules and energy.
If Red gets the job, Griff isn’t going anywhere. They’re close friends. Griff is a good recruiter hamstrung by JB. He’s also coached on a staff, Dayton, that played all man to man (pack line) and undoubtedly knows how to teach it.

In no particular order these are the guys I Interview for the job that are somewhat realistic in my opinion.

Matt Langel - Colgate HC
John Becker - Vermont HC
Mike Hopkins - Washington HC
Red Autry - Syracuse Asst
Brian Dutcher - SDSU HC
Pat Kelsey - Charleston HC
Grant McCasland - North Texas HC
Ed Cooley - Providence HC
Chris Beard - Former Texas HC
Bryan Hodgson - Alabama Asst
Jason Hart - GLeague Ignite HC

Also gauge the interest of any NBA guys.
Hodgson is intriguing as an Oates disciple and western NY native. Though if it’s not an SU guy, I’d want someone with head coaching experience and experience building a program, ala Miller, Beard or Langel or Wes Miller or Mike Boynton. And All the college basketball analysts rave about Grant McCasland.

I think the most likely outcome will not be a big name head coach that everyone is familiar with or an internal candidate, but a mid-major / lower level coach who is young and perceived to be an up-and-comer.
I’d be shocked if it was a low kid major. I think an A10 or American coach would be doable. Even a Big East coach.

More than nothing...played in the ACC for K, apprenticed at numerous programs (Thad Motta, Chris Mack), knows the landscape, went to Cuse, seems to be doing an ok job with not a lot to work with.

There's usually a candidate in these things that knocks it out of the park in the interview process. He might be that guy. Or, he might flop.
Greg Paulus has no shot at this point. That’s laughable. Let’s see what he can do at a bigger program first.

You have to do them all very well.

None of them will even take the call. Zero chance. Oats, Beard and Musselman are all non starters.
1- You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. They don’t answer, they don’t answer. But you HAVE to make the call, and if you don’t. That is malpractice. Can’t assume anything, things change.

1B- I know for a fact Brad Stevens is not done coaching for the rest of his life. (But why would anyone on this board believe someone who has sources when it’s just easier to disagree and tell them they are wrong)

2- I must have read the OP wrong. Could have sworn he said “your”, as in my opinion.

3- you have posted on this thread 5 times and have not given an answered to the question. Only disagreed with others opinions. Do you happen to have an opinion?

I'd still go to Oats.

Whats he supposed to do incriminate Miller?

If JB is convinced to retire only to see Grasso named the next coach, he might be spicy enough to take the Georgetown gig.
Jared Grasso or Mike Brey could get the Georgetown gig.

JB's tenure has been extraordinary, and there will probably never be anyone like him again in the sport. None of us are happy with the way things are at present, but we have plenty of other threads about that. Instead of rehashing all of our frustrations, let's discuss some of the positive qualities of other potential coaches. I haven't been following things this year as closely as usual, but these names have captured my attention.

  • Ben McCollum (NW Missouri State) looks like the Lance Leipold of NCAAMbball.
  • Greg Paulus (Niagara) likely needs no introduction here.
  • Sean Miller (Xavier) results speak for themselves; a lot of wild claims being made here against him that go well beyond the public story and conclusions (at least thus far) of law enforcement.
  • Jason Hart (G League Unite) SU alumnus that knows the current landscape as well as anyone, but can he coach and recruit at a national level?
  • Matt Langel (Colgate) Runs a winning program over in Hamilton and has... experience... boatracing P5 in-state rivals.
My top choice here would be Sean Miller based on experience and results (and pending any fallout from previous shenanigans), but pair any of the other guys with a top recruiter and I think the (near) future will be very bright.
If we actually went outside the Cuse family, I could see Ed Cooley, Shaka Smart, and Pat Kelsey be considered for the job.

My personal favorite is Sean Miller. He comes from the East Coast and has won big wherever he has coached.

Makes sense but you still need new blood. So if they are close friends Griff becomes AHC in this scenario? Then bring 2 others in?

If Rob Murphy didn’t have some kind of scandal going on with the Pistons I’d be all for him coming back as an assistant.

If JB stays another year, add Dennis Gates to the list. A bit of a long shot considering he’s at an SEC school, although Mizzou isn’t in the top tier of that conference. I could see Gates replacing Hamilton at FSU if we don’t strike first.

Dawn Staley. Break the glass ceiling. If she’s a success, SU is legendary. If not, at least they tried. (I know she wouldn’t leave USC.)

1) Dawn Staley
2) Kara Lawson

Hiring a woman, the first in men's Division I/II/III history, would rock the college basketball world and would make national news. This would be a publicity home run, SU would get national attention for years to come.

Staley has proven to be a great coach. Before she took over the Temple women's program they had 10 losing seasons in a row. In her 8 years there she had one losing season. At South Carolina she's done even better making them a national power equal to UConn.

Lawson doesn't have the experience Staley has but her 3 seasons at Duke have all been winning records (they've only lost 4 times this year). She's a winner with a lot of potential.
