JB on First Take approx 11:30 AM today

Always has the dry, caustic sense of humor. As someone with the same tendencies, it can sometimes be off putting. Not everyone gets you in the way you intended, and it reeks of insecurity.

Both he and Smith were laughing when he said it. This board is proof of what he said.

This past December.

“It’s not just that he’s still going, it’s the way that he does it,” Wright, 59, said of Boeheim. “I wish people would know how hard he works in recruiting. You see him at all the events, you see him out all the time at games, seeing guys play.”

“It’s always kind of motivating to me. At his age, if he’s still doing it like this, he ‘s till working hard, we’ve gotta keep going to keep up with him. .That’s really the way you look at it, you gotta try to keep up with him.”
It's nice that Wright says nice things about him. I'm sure he has a great deal of respect for JB. It doesn't make it true though. I have seen Wright at the Hoop Hall classic. Never saw JB though. Red was there this year. Maybe it would help with Mintz who was playing. along with other top jr's.

All due respect to Jay Wright he is just pumping up his friend.

To dasher's point I saw Gerry at a game in the DMV before Georgetown, no JB. And it's not like he was gameplanning sans Gerry. Just a little thing but still.

If you go to these big high school events, and talk to the recruiting guys who go to every event, they will tell you they never see JB.

Jim must be very philosophical. He picked Arizona to win the NCAAT, a program that should have the harshest sanctions levied against them of any of the cheaters caught in the FBI probe.

We played Virgina Tech this year. We were in VA.
Who went to Oak Hill to watch Mintz?
Associate HC Red Autry. Not the HC.
Jim Boeheim has not been recruiting as hard as he could.
The talent level has gone down.
Hopefully we can get it back.
I will see it before I believe it.

There is no doubt assistants go to more games than the HC, with every program. But I know for a fact that JB was all over recruiting the last cycle. Many big events were streamed or on live TV and JB was always there it seemed. Sometimes alone, sometimes with GMac, sometimes with Red, sometimes the whole staff. We made numerous comments on the recruiting board. And I’m sure some were there, but I don’t remember noticing every ACC coach there. HB and Scheyer were the two most noticeable usually. Maybe they just got seats in front of the camera.

And you can take all of the other stuff, playing zone, treatment of players, lack of the bench, the biggest killer is lack of recruiting. We have won in the past with all of those other things. We always had players. We had players this year but no talent mix. They all did the same thing and worse yet, they all couldn't do the same things. Defense, ball handling, we didn't have guys that could do that.

Dashers point can still be valid if you interpret that quote as Jay thinking that Jim is doing pretty good for his age. Doesn’t mean it’s good enough though.

Let me just say this:

I do not believe this, but let's say JB was out on the recruiting trail as hard as ever (again, I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS TO BE SO), but let's say he was, and we STILL ended up with this roster, that is a worse sign for us and JB than if he's just offloading to the assistants and we have this roster.

I want to be clear - if this is what happens when JB hits the road hard, then we are the titanic and are done without blowing things up. Now, if this is what happens when JB has taken his foot off the gas pedal for a while (again, this is what I assume to be true) from personally hitting the recruiting trail hard, it still is bad (and it is bad), but at least there is a road to fix it if he wants to change his ways (again, I don't foresee that, but at least it's a non-zero shot he does at least).

The two scenarios are both bad. One just has a finality to it with the other at least having a sliver of hope that the guy changes.

It's also important to keep in mind that JB worked harder this past summer than he has in a LONG time. We were in with a lot of great prospects. Dior. Westry. Lands. Clingan. Filipowski. JJ.

And we went o-fer.

I like the class we got -- foundational program types, most of which will probably be four-year guys. And it is important to have quality depth on the roster. But none of the guys we landed project as immediate impact guys, which is something this roster desperately needs.

Edit -- to be clear, I agree with what Dasher states above. Just that he was more active / involved this summer than he has been in many, many years [which has nothing to do with whether he went on the road or not -- my recollection is that a lot of the stuff took place on campus].

Very fair. One other note I'd add, there is no way a five-man class will have all five stick around. Some will portal out, it's just the way it is. Even pre-portal, no way a five man class would be sticking around. It just doesn't happen.

I like this class as a foundational class as well, but we'll be lucky to have 3 guys that stick around and really contribute out of the 5.

JB was great. He looks like hes 60 and is as sharp as ever.
Ive mentioned my Dad many times on this board. Hes 88 and still climbs, sails, and rows his boat 2 to 4 miles 3-4 times a week in the summer. Hes as sharp as a tack. My point is age is a number. Physical and mental health are what matters and from what i see Jim really isnt slowing down.
On flip side-
Retiring with good health is a blessing vs working until bad health forces retirement!

No way he said that? Like did he really say that?

Sounds like he did.

BUT let's keep in mind that JB has a sardonic wit. Context matters, and sometimes printed summaries of what's said doesn't capture the spirit that's intended, the banter back and forth between the interviewer and JB, etc.

Could have just been him putting down the team's performance as a put down toward himself, but then bragging about his kids -- instead of him throwing the other players under the bus as it might appear from looking at that one sentence in a vacuum.
