JB on Orangenation right now.

Sorry, was this posted in 1975, 1980, 1995, or 2024?

When JB started - when we were "patient" - players stayed for 3-4 years. A rebuild was truly that - start fresh, recruit the pieces, put them into a system which eventually worked (long, lanky players in the zone). And find some gems in the old transfer portal (and we had many).

But now, coaches get 1-2 years with players. They have to produce day 1 - even freshmen - see: Cooper Flagg.

So with the team exodus from last year to this year, we bought... sorry recruited/transferred in... players who aren't working out. We're keeping it close, but we're losing.
Then why are Dennis Gates and Ed Cooley still employed?

Well for 1 Gtown paid a lot for EC and his buyout would be fairly big and 2 his team is 9-2 in year 2, no reason to fire him yet

Gates? The head coach of the 10-1 Mizzou Tigers who have a win over #1 Kansas this season? Gates who has two conference championships and two NCAA tourney berths? Gates has a track record.

Why is the sky blue? No one knows. Why is anyone still employed?
I think everyone knew what I meant. It was more nuanced than you described. This doesn’t need to be rehashed every time there’s a discussion.
You brought it up.

The guy I responded to made it seem like you need instant results. Georgetown went 9-23 last year.

Gates is in his third year at Mizzou. They were 8-24 last season.

People want to avoid being Georgetown and they were garbage before that because they hired an unproven head coach who was an alum and former player and he cratered the program even more than the nepo hire before him.

It hasn’t been a decade. This is only year two. We had to be patient with JB and now we have to be patient with the rebuild. That includes patiently waiting to see if Red has what it takes. Is that asking too much?

We’ve had decades of success. Success that other programs have yet to achieve. The sense of entitlement from our fanbase is nauseating. None of us are owed anything.

If we move on from Red after year three or year four and don’t hire a big name coach, riot then. The university let JB finish on his terms. I don’t have a problem with that decision. The university is giving Red an opportunity to prove himself. I don’t have a problem with that decision either.

You do, fine. Nothing’s going to change, though.
“entitlement” is such an odd word to use here. I mean I’m not surprised, it’s the word folks use when they want to sh!! on the fan base that they feel superior to.

This program has been largely irrelevant for going on 8 years now. You can call people “rash” for demanding Red be fired now, or “delusional” for thinking he’ll get less than 3 seasons.

But “entitled”? That’s the look-down-your-nose approach, which is par for the course for some folks who post here, but I don’t know why you’d do that. Obviously most people aren’t going to the Dome or NYC for games much anymore. And our TV ratings stink. Seems like most folks are acting rationally in staying away from a crappy entertainment experience.

Damage control. Signed a bad contract with a coach who doesnt appear to have the chops and now you're locked in. You need to make it seem like a short term issue to try and salvage ticket sales next year. Im not sure itll work.
If there isn’t drastic improvement this season, the dome will be empty next year.

Attendance is already struggling. I went to preseason games against Marathon Oil years ago that were better attended than this year’s regular season games. There are empty rows on the first level at games!

Does that mean you would have fired Cooley after one year?

Sorry, but apart from Freeman and Moore, there isn’t likely to be improvement with the current roster. Even if JJ returns, the talent isn’t there.

Next year - different story. Good recruiting class, maybe help from the portal, maybe Freeman returns. SU fans will judge next year based on how the lineup comes together.

Sure but I'm guessing your in the camp that red deserves 4 or 5 years, right? And JB should coach until death?

You have to factor in the buyout and whether you can afford it. For example I'm football A&m could afford Jimbo's. At USC they can't afford Lincoln Rileys which is equal or greater than Jimbo's $75 mill

It depends on the investment made and buyout that come with a firing.

A cost/benefit analysis

I would give Red at least one more year. He might get four regardless if SU doesn’t want to pay the buyout.

I’m responding to the poster who wants to avoid being Georgetown.

Is that all bad results or does the steep price increase factor in?

I miss him so much more than I thought I would.
It is unbelievable that this post would draw dislike reactions! Unbelievable. On a Syracuse fan message board. A positive comment about the man who handed us so many incredible moments through his sheer ingenuity and fire! So many on here should be ashamed of themselves for their lowbrow ignorance and gutter sensibilities. It wasn’t the end of the Big East’s dominance. It wasn’t the portal. It wasn’t the winds of chance and fortune which so many programs have weathered. The bullseye is squarely on the great man’s back in your incurious estimations. Ya bunch of unworthy squints! Now ask me what I really think so I don’t have to hold back.

I stand by what I said. Just calling it like I see it. We can agree to disagree on that.

To me, the last eight years should be divided. Six years of waiting for JB to go and two years of Red trying to prove his worth. We’re being asked to be patient for two separate things. I don’t mind. Others do.

The one thing that the old man was right about was how Cuse and the rest of the ACC are getting slaughtered by the SEC with NIL.

We can blame him and a hundred other people responsible over the years on the Hill for that but the truth is that doesn’t matter now. All that matters now is opening up the money valve next year and for all the next years.

We need an infusion of cash next year to kickstart this rust bucket.

Does the program need more money (i.e., talent)? Absolutely. We'll never have as much as the SEC though, so it makes that much more important to ensure the man in charge maximizes the talent he has. We have little room for error. We need a good coach who knows what he's doing.

That's fine.

I also stand by what I said. There's a segment of posters here who sneer at the masses and think they're all idiots. And sometimes they are. But IMHO not in the case of being critical of the job Autry is doing this year.

Why can seton hall and providence out perform us in the NIL era ?

Seton Hall is one of the poorest school NIL wise, Shaheen does more with less though. Providence is the only show in RI and has a pretty solid NIL budget.

If every game is a blowout, team lacks talent.
If games are close, you can blame coaching.
