A different angle here. Yeah, we’re competitive with keeping him…but I imagine a big piece of this is a much larger buyout. We want coaches to be poached - it means we’re succeeding. Well, we should be getting paid for those moves which helps us backfill at a higher level, or move the money somewhere more useful.

Now a reasonable next step is figuring out how to do this with players, too. That’s how it’s done in euro soccer. The poaching WILL happen…but that’s how smaller clubs can help sustain high success. They get compensated and can reinvest. Out talent could and should be a revenue source. I wonder if something like that is on the table as this stuff shakes out.

Great news for sure and i think the interest in Nixon was probably a bit more than we even realized from other programs. I think the Eagles could have called when Moore takes the Saints job. You never know, he's obviously in demand and has a solid resume. When you have the # 1 rated passing offense in college you will get interest

as far as OSU, I think Hartline was in line for the promotion, he's been there as the WR coach and very well respected for some time. He was announced on Monday as well.

I think Nixon will eventually either head to the NFL as an OC or get a head coaching gig at a P4 school if he has continued success but good for now. 1 year at a time when it comes to staff and players
Hartline was actually the OC for a year in 2023 before Chip Kelly took over in 2024. So with the big loss to Michigan in 2023 they essentially both dropped Hartline back again and also decided they were going to bring in competition for McCord.

But Day was the primary play caller when Hartline was the OC in 2023, I wonder if that changes this time

Would think so. He didn't do a very good job dealing with head coaching and play calling that year.

Per Thamel, Nixon interviewed for multiple college head coaching jobs.

First off, I am excited to see SU spending money like it needs to if it wants to be a consistent winning program. It is great to have a ton notch OC here. It was really refreshing to have an offense that was so good in 2024. I still can’t believe we actually led the country in passing yards.

That said, we gotta play the guessing game on the HC jobs Coach Nixon interviewed for.

Temple is likely one. Florida Atlantic? Wake Forest? Marshall?

Getting 2 years from an OC this good is extremely lucky. If we can somehow get 3 seasons of Nixon with his kids in school that would be insanely good luck.

He probably did have better opportunities and he's losing McCord moving on was likely the easy route for him but he didn't.

maybe Fran pulled a Brady and took less money to slide it to Nixon? who knows.

In college coaching, that’s more like “pulling a Dabo”

For many years in the earlier part of his Clemson career, Dabo took a lower salary himself than other comparable HC’s were earning, and used the delta to pay his coordinators and key position coaches more.

That’s one of the reasons Venables remained as his DC for so long, in spite of often being mentioned for numerous high level coaching openings.

I can totally see Fran doing similar.

He’s smart, and he would bet on himself that getting and retaining the best talent, will work out for him and the program in the longer term.

Hartline will be out if they don't repeat or beat Michigan. Why is Day going to bring in a big name/ego when he's an OC himself and just won a title.

I think he did an awesome job for us last year. But, as mentioned elsewhere, how much of this was due to the good fortune of landing Kyle McCord via the portal?

Now, with Nixon coming back, I am optimistic we will do well on offense, but if there is a drop-off, it will be easier to say it is likely due to a (relative) talent drop at QB.

If there is no significant drop-off, then we are in for quite a ride!

Let's buckle up, boys

Obviously having McCord helps tremendously but there were so many creative plays we ran where an idiot like me could see how well designed it was.

I agree Kyle played a huge role in our success.
Only game in which I would consider a bad game for Nixon would be the Pitt game. He didn’t adjust quick enough to the pressed man coverage and Kyle couldn’t make his normal passes.
Other games we saw some good imitation, loved when he had Allen and Nixon in the game at the same time.
I think this is by far our most creative offensive mind we’ve had in many years.
Fingers crossed he keeps working his magic and can make his offense great for a newer QB.
Hoping his son is healthy at start it will give us two good RBs to lean on.

Look at this way. The job gets tougher for 2025, so he deserves to get paid more to do it. If he has a rough year, at least he got paid more for that risk of delayed opportunity. If he has a great year... sky is the limit. So he is betting on himself also. But at least higher paid! Good job by all!

People were asking why he would interview if he didn't want or expect to get the job. This is one reason why. He was able to cash in.

You would think the bball and fball programs have different ADs lol! This is what you do when your coaches are elite. Keep them here for as long as possible

Great post. Take heed all.
