Jesse needs his own thread…

Jesse can shoot the ball. He actually can shoot it with good touch out to the 3pt line. I think the next evolution to his game is to hit the pick and pop
I had a really good feeling about Jesse upon seeing this play.
Jan. 28, 2019. Big game at Clemson. We needed a win badly and Jesse was not a normal rotation piece.
But in this game, I think due to fouls, he was thrust into a prominent roll in the game's final minutes. He turned the ball over and it might have cost us the game. But it was a helluva pass and told me we had something to work with that was going to be much, much more than we had in Chukwu.

Go to 8:27 mark of the video (not the game clock)

One of my favorite Jesse plays last Saturday was the one handed rebound. I know it was against an undermanned Lville team but it was fun to watch, though not recommended as a solid rebounding technique.

I don't think it is hyperbole to suggest that it's time to start including Jesse in the conversation about the best centers ever produced by this program:
  • Seikaly
  • Smith
  • Rak
  • Etan [added]
  • Arinze
  • Bouie

He's starting to actualize potential that puts him on a different level than McNasty, Fab, or Otis.

Again, I know he's just at the beginning of his journey, but I don't think it is outlandish -- he's just scratching the surface, and is the best offensive center we've had in awhile. ~3 blocks per game. Sky's the limit if he can get a little stronger.

20 lbs and he will mandate a double team from every team in the country. Just imagine if Rak was 7-0 with Jesse's wingspan and flexibility.

Etan!

Especially if he can gain more strength, by the end of next year we may...potentially... be talking about him in the same breath as Rony. Rony's junior year stats were better...Jesse's will undoubtedly finish above where they currently are...but Jesse is converting on around 10% more of his shots than Junior Rony did.

I love how Jesse doesn't mess around much with tossing the ball up. He flushes everything he can. A lot of our past centers have not taken that advantage of their height to do that.

I am so impressed with how much touch Jesse has on his shot, out to 6-8 feet. It's like a tennis ball in his hand, and he uses the glass so well! He banks a lot of shots at sharp angles sometimes, and they almost always go in. I don't know that I've ever seen a player since I was a little kid who had such control of the ball, while attacking the basket at high speeds.

Bill Walton used to have what I always thought was about the perfect bank shot and use of the glass, such as his 21-22 game against Memphis in the NCAA Final. But the way John Wooden seemed to teach those guys to shoot the bank shot (like Keith Wilkes and David Meyers and Richard Washington and so many others) - well, they put more "loop" into the shot, more arc, and it always struck me as almost like a billiards shot, the touch those guys would have on their bank shots.

Larry Bird, too, and a handful of others of that era were great at that, which I think is kind of a lost art in today's world of analytics.

The thing about Jesse that's different, is he really drills it sometimes, at very tight angles, and really bangs those shots home. His technique is different than anybody I've seen since Connie Hawkins or George Gervin or Wilt the Stilt. Those guys had amazing ball control.

Edit - let me add Dominque Wilkins to that list, too.

I believe because Jesse is a foreign student he cannot earn NIL money. Not an NCAA rule; I believe it is student visa rule

Wow. I did not know that. That's a bummer for Jesse.

Counterpoint - with a 70% field goal percentage not taking that shot, just keep rollin' after the pick!

;)

Another guy would love to have plugged into teams that needed a big. Just imagine Etan on say the 2016 FF team or even last years team putting Marek at the 4..
I mean, put Jr or Sr Etan on just about any college team and they're probably going to be pretty good.
