JJ Starling

Actually hurt his shoulder against us! 4 min in…hard to see when he did it but he dove on the floor right before. What makes no sense is that’s his left not his right…Jj Cuse game
i think i remember reading somewhere it is both shoulders

Honestly depending on how the season goes he might want to shut it down early, get surgery or whatever rehab he can, and prepare for next year. It would be in the best interest for his career because he’s not making the NBA with his broken, post-injury shot.
really depends on what is the real issue with him medically

if it wont heal without surgery...I agree with you...better for him to just shut it down now

if it is merely poor mechanics due to injury compensation and he is perfectly healthy now...no way should he shut it down

at the bare minimum I hope he has seen a specialist or two...

any chance he hasnt had proper medical care here?

I think its unlikely he's still injured. It’s more likely he changed his mechanics when he was injured and they have not returned to normal post injury.
If thats the case put a shock collar on him until he remembers the proper stroke.

I don't know, but he still could be injured. In my case, I had no pain and full range of motion but less strength. If torn tendons is the case it may be too late for repair. We just don't know unless there are x-rays. If tendons are torn off the bone they will not heal.

I'm quite certain the Syracuse medical staff and Red are not going to play a player that has a serious injury especially when it was known said player had multiple injuries last year. I think the fact this is even being questioned is a bit dopey. It's more likely his mechanics are shot from a previous injury.

Does not appear injured when he drives contorts, extending arm when driving?

i find it problematic that he cant dribble or shoot or pass. other than that..hes exactly what we need.

One of the crazy things with Starling is that he looks like he decelerates every time he drives. He can get by his primary defender like 85% of the time (very good!) but then it looks like he can’t maintain speed and ends up slowing down and dribbling right into a double team (very bad!) leading to TO or crappy off balance shot.

I’m not saying Red should bench JJ, or even not start him anymore.

But - force-feeding him 30+ minutes, when he’s clearly NOT on, is a recipe for disaster.

Especially if it’s coming at the expense of minutes for Q or Cuffe.

Maybe JJ would be more effective if he was “only” playing 20-25 mins/game?

I’d sure like to see Red try that, at least.
I think his minutes may also depend upon whether we need his excellent ball handling. Wouldn’t want Judah out there all by himself as the only ball handler. I said it before, but I think JJ is playing more point guard right now allowing Judah a bit more freedom to create. Without JJ on the court I don’t know if we have anyone I trust in terms of ball handling. Maybe Copeland if he tones it down just a bit and becomes more steady.

There are a few things that JJ does that don’t necessarily show up in the box score. Ball handling being one of them.

Cuffe doesnt seem like a train wreck as a ball handler and, agreed on Q, he isn't bad when he doesnt spaz out.

Something that jumped out at me last night, is he's moving to fast, playing rushed, similar to what Sy Boogie would do. When you look at the roles solidifying on the team, I know what JJ's position is, but I don't really know his role other than to compliment Judah. Him and Kyle don't seem to have their roles clarified. I wonder if that's part of the issue with him? Injuries aside of course, but he seems like he's in his head.
Agreed. He plays like his hair is on fire. Needs more change of pace

Cuffe is a much better shooter and has some ball handling, I agree. He needs to learn not to try to drive like the other two guards. He frequently is out of control (like Copeland) when he does that.

Cuffe: better shooter, ok ball handler
Copeland: better creator, ok ball handler

Both need to try to avoid the turnovers.

That is what I said. Perhaps he has not healed from a previous injury. Some injuries do not heal by themselves.
I have never heard of a player forgetting how to shoot. However, it is not uncommon for injuries to have repercussions.
Obviously, I do not know if that is the case. Note that his slump perfectly coincided with when he was injured last year. The stats were posted earlier in this thread.

Which is more important, having a shooting guard that can shoot or having a back-up ball handler? In his current iteration JJ is a 1, not a 2. Give Cope a sedative and make him the starting 2. JJ as the back-up point. Groom him for next year's point.

Not sure. It depends upon the team you’re playing. If you’re playing a heavy pressure team it would be more important for Starling to play. I’m not giving up on JJ yet. He’s too talented. But I do admit his leash is shorter.

Cope can’t shoot either.

How do people not see this?
Blinded by the potential?
He makes some crazy behind-the-back plays which make us forgive missed shots?
Other guys like McCloud can't make a 3' shot?

We’d probably have more success teaching Bell to ball handle and move him to the 2.

Cope is a deadeye foul shooter. He might well have potential. Same for Cuffe. He won our 3 pt shooting contest. JJ's net pts vs LSU were negative. His trajectory has been downhill l. I feel for him. Something is not right; psychological, injury or something else?
Every game counts. We are probably a bubble team. I would reduce his PT until he shows in practice that his slump is over. Give someone else a chance

If playing JJ at the 1 even badly for 32 min leads to 35 from JJ I’m cool…
