Juli mugged at Destiny

Sure. I don’t want to derail this thread into what happened to me, but happy to divulge a bit more.

Was walking into the mall to pick up my computer from the Apple store that was being repaired. Monday morning. First week after New Years. I went in the old Best Buy entrance. A guy (probably early 20s) was on his way out. At the time we were still masking in NY state. I must have shot him a look because he wasn’t wearing a mask. He didn’t like it, stopped, and turned around. Words were exchanged. I turned around and walked away.

He turned back around, came back into the mall and rushed me. It was at that point that I realized he was going to attack me. I was carrying my hiking/daypack backpack and realized I had a knife in there. I pulled it out and shouted “hey, leave me alone. I don’t want any trouble”. (I wasn’t planning on using it…more so to scare the guy).

That just made him even more angry once he saw I had a knife. He tried to wrestle it from me and was screaming to give him the knife and that he had a gun. Once I managed to put the knife back in my pocket that’s when he started hitting me. Just head and body blows in all directions. I went down pretty quick and was trying to just deflect.

This was next to the old Best Buy entrance and the nail salon. There were staff and customers in the nail salon and no one shouted at the guy or tried to intervene. I was screaming for help because I honestly thought he was going to kill me.

Eventually some onlookers further inside the mall (closer to the Macy’s entrance) ran towards him and chased him off. SPD came but they didn’t find him. They asked if I wanted to press charges but I have a young family and was afraid of personal consequences if I had to testify against him in court.

I suffered a concussion and multiple facial fractures. It was pretty bad for a few weeks. Any kind of technology gave me really bad headaches.

And he never did get my computer. I hadn’t even made it to the Apple store yet. The only silver lining to all of that was Apple botched my computer repair and they gave me a brand new unit out of the box. (I definitely got a security guard to escort me back to my car on the way out).

Given what happened to me, I’m really glad that Juli is ok.

That mall has turned into a real cesspool.
Yikes!!! Hope you have a full recovery.

In the north Charlotte area (Concord) we have a huge outlet mall called Concord Mills. The last two years they have had multiple shootings, including a police officer that was shot and killed about a mile away from the mall. Also there was a teenage girl shot and killed over an argument between two young men. The girl had nothing to do with the disagreement. The mall administration finally implemented that if you are under eighteen years of age, that you cannot come to the mall without an adult. It is strongly enforced from what I have heard. It has helped out quite a bit. I wonder if Destiny has anything like this in place or has considered it.

Last time I was in that mall there was a group of a dozen teenagers terrorizing everyone in their vicinity. It had been years since I went to the mall and I haven’t returned since. It’s to bad because I’d probably go more often if I didn’t feel like there was a high likelihood I’d get confronted by some jack-wagon teenager.

I'm am horrified that this happened to Juli, and am hopeful she will recover from the emotional trauma soon.

Side note. As a non-local who visits the mall once a year, I'm naive to the vitriol about the place I am seeing from all of you. I will take your word for it that it has declined, but when we visit, as we did a couple weeks ago for the BC game, we still typically enjoy our time there. I will say, though, every time we come fewer and fewer of the OG places we always used to love seem to remain. Still hurting from the loss of UNOs...

The only time I will go is Monday through Friday and it has to be in the morning when it opens. Also I always take my off duty handgun just in case. It’s sad that it has come to this…

You are very lucky. I am glad you are okay. You would think that having a knife would have deterred him from further attacking you. Like I said earlier, some of these criminals don’t care.

This, m- before 11am, all the scumbags are still sleeping. I also only go there when I need something asap. Otherwise it’s Amazon, especially with the new distribution centers it’s 1 day shipping.

REAL? Where? Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single spot to get good pizza there.

This was a bout a mask?!? Holy cripes! And it took a while for anyone to come to your aid? Yikes! I am aghast that that happened to you and am so sorry for your suffering and pain. Glad that you are better now.

I think at this point many who hang around Destiny are looking to start trouble at the drop of the hat.

This felt like one of those instances.

I went to that mall many times in the past. Never felt unsafe there, however that was back in 2014. I'm saddened to hear it has regressed this much.
The Paul Blarts at that mall were pretty useless, they are scared of getting beaten up themselves. They need a consistent police presence.

Place needs a massive police presence to stay open, absolutely shameful the amount of bad stuff that goes down there.

Ahem, massive investment in private security.

Pyramid's perfected the art of sloughing off the cost of doing business onto the back of the public, and in this area it's been a problem for years. You're right, there's trouble there all the time; I agree with the poster who said that the publicized crime in the mall is a drop in the bucket of what actually happens there. If you're going to shop there, be aware of your surroundings.

That's awful. I'm sorry that happened. Senseless. Glad you're on the mend.

Rally unfortunate to hear the mall is so rough. I worked at Hoyt's as a teenager and loved it. I have really fond memories of Carousel. This was before all the Destiny stuff.

didn’t realize it was this bad. I go probably only a few times a year, and have never seen any issues.

No risks will stop me from getting World of Beer Mac and Cheese bites, when I’m nearby.

Did SPD ever put that substation in the basement of the mall?

Private security can’t carry guns, these thugs aren’t afraid of guys with flash lights.

Really. If a mall can't provide basic security to its visitors then it might as well close up shop. Also seems like crime in Syracuse is out of control although I know they are far from alone.

Been out of town for a long time but never felt the demographics supported that mall. Toss in rampant crime and that's the death knell.
