Juli mugged at Destiny

Destiny on life support? Wow… thought there was always a lot of traffic there. Is it not still one of the largest malls in country?
These boards used to have a lot of smart guys mocking anyone who thought the whole subsidized nightmare was a bad idea

Some folks know that I’ve been absent from the board these past few months. I was assaulted at the mall the first week in January and sustained a concussion and a lot of facial injuries. I haven’t been back there since.

It’s horrible to hear about Juli and I’m not at all surprised it happened to her. The mall is a horrible spot at this point in time.
I'm so sorry to hear this. Be well

The last time I tried to shop in a mall, last year -
I drove a half hour from my office (and that much further away from home) to go to the ‘closest’ Apple store, to get my daughter the MacBook Pro she was required to have for college (art school).

Drove around the parking lot for like :10 mins because I couldn’t determine which entrance was closest to where I needed to go in, finally just parked (lot was jammed, I was shocked) and head in.

There’s a line to get into the Apple store. I queue up.
Maybe :15 mins later, and incredibly stereotypical Apple employee (call him Young Comic Book Store Guy) works his way back to me, asks what I’m there for.

I tell him the exact make, model, color, and specs of the MacBook I want - I had called prior to confirm it was in stock -
and that I just wanted to grab it and pay for it.

Oh no, you can’t do that!
You need an appointment, and the next one is - he checks - 2.5 hours from now.

I’m there on my lunch break, I can’t burn the entire FFF’n afternoon on this, so I turn around and walk out.

From my car in the parking lot, I ordered it directly from Apple online, got free next-day delivery, and it was at my house by noon the next day.

I will never set foot in an Apple store, or in a mall, ever again.
I had a similar experience with the AT&T store and unless I'm going out to eat, a movie, or some place to try on clothes I avoid brick and mortar like the plague now.

To keep it short - I literally was on hold with AT&T for an hour and a half to try to return an IPhone that was the wrong color (yes fiancee's of course lol) only to have them tell me I had to return it to a physical AT&T store. So I go to the AT&T store and I'm told there that I can only return it by calling customer service. So I went back home and waited on hold for another hour until I finally got the right customer service rep who processed the return.

So maybe this wasn't the brick and mortar location's fault in the long run, and just a testament to what a dumpster fire AT&T's customer service is, but it still pushed me in the same direction. I guess if I'm going to be inconvenienced by clueless people might as well be while I have my ass parked on the couch lol.

Not unique to Syracuse or the Carousel Mall - Crossgates Mall in Albany has the same problems. Sad really.
Greece Ridge mall in Rochester is post apocalyptic if you believe the rumors. I wouldn't know, i believe then enough to not prove them wrong

This was a bout a mask?!? Holy cripes! And it took a while for anyone to come to your aid? Yikes! I am aghast that that happened to you and am so sorry for your suffering and pain. Glad that you are better now.
My first thought. It all started over a mask or lack of mask. Seriously what is going on here? Crazy. I always go there when in Syracuse, not so much to shop but just for a place to go, get some walking in, and have even met people there to eat. I also sometimes stay at the Aloft hotel which is right there, and never loved that area or that the parking lot is across the street.
Also regarding Julie, I am thinking as a 12 year old with someone older driving them that this may have been a gang initiation thing. Or a parent off the rails. But sounds like the gang thing to me. In all fairness hopefully this 12 year old life can be set straight also by this. Time to make it right.

Potential homicide, brutal assault...subpar customer service.

When will the atrocities stop?

Your mom is VT's destiny.

Truly hope Juli is OK and not too traumatized, Shocked anyone goes to a mall anymore (multiple are closing/being demolished in Cincy this year).
Kenwood still good tho

Sure. I don’t want to derail this thread into what happened to me, but happy to divulge a bit more.

Was walking into the mall to pick up my computer from the Apple store that was being repaired. Monday morning. First week after New Years. I went in the old Best Buy entrance. A guy (probably early 20s) was on his way out. At the time we were still masking in NY state. I must have shot him a look because he wasn’t wearing a mask. He didn’t like it, stopped, and turned around. Words were exchanged. I turned around and walked away.

He turned back around, came back into the mall and rushed me. It was at that point that I realized he was going to attack me. I was carrying my hiking/daypack backpack and realized I had a knife in there. I pulled it out and shouted “hey, leave me alone. I don’t want any trouble”. (I wasn’t planning on using it…more so to scare the guy).

That just made him even more angry once he saw I had a knife. He tried to wrestle it from me and was screaming to give him the knife and that he had a gun. Once I managed to put the knife back in my pocket that’s when he started hitting me. Just head and body blows in all directions. I went down pretty quick and was trying to just deflect.

This was next to the old Best Buy entrance and the nail salon. There were staff and customers in the nail salon and no one shouted at the guy or tried to intervene. I was screaming for help because I honestly thought he was going to kill me.

Eventually some onlookers further inside the mall (closer to the Macy’s entrance) ran towards him and chased him off. SPD came but they didn’t find him. They asked if I wanted to press charges but I have a young family and was afraid of personal consequences if I had to testify against him in court.

I suffered a concussion and multiple facial fractures. It was pretty bad for a few weeks. Any kind of technology gave me really bad headaches.

And he never did get my computer. I hadn’t even made it to the Apple store yet. The only silver lining to all of that was Apple botched my computer repair and they gave me a brand new unit out of the box. (I definitely got a security guard to escort me back to my car on the way out).

Given what happened to me, I’m really glad that Juli is ok.

That mall has turned into a real cesspool.
Wow, there is absolutely a lot of anger out there. I just have to say "Wow" again. Some people are really angry about the mask thing and vaccinations. I hope you make a full recovery. From now on just smile and say under your breath "expletive of choice"

I don't think the crime at Destiny, notwithstanding Hak's experience, has much to do with masks. It's just a general crime wave.

I live 50 miles northeast of Philly and in that city they had 750+ car jackings in 2021 and over 100 in the first two weeks of 2022. You need to keep your head on a swivel in some of these places. For me growing up in Syracuse it would have been inconceivable that this level of crime would have been going on back then.

this kind of stuff is horrible.

so much random violence in the US -- people kinda get de-sensitized to it and it becomes somewhat normalized...

one of the main reasons I moved away from the US and live abroad now - here in europe I dont worry about getting shot etc...
Currently many people in Europe are worrying about getting shot.
Sure you're not in Ukraine though.
Awful stuff.

Glad she is OK. It's sad to see another longstanding part of our world, and especially the younger crowd's is circling the drain. Kids have already been put in a corner from CoVid on top of society pushing them to do everything virtually.

Athletics funding is down, participation in athletics is down and now the other healthy outlets are shrinking. It'd sad and scary

Retail jobs have always been a pretty important 'healthy outlet' for HS kids/teenagers/young adults. Not wanting to touch most of this thread with a 10 ft pole but its sad to see people cheering on the demise of brick and mortar and bragging about purchasing everything online from amazon. I guess save 3% so a robot and drone can sell you a good or service and not a HS kid.

I used to walk around that mall as a kid maybe age 8 and up with no problems. Thought it was insane when I was a freshman at SU and they made it 18+ and a bunch of other freshmen students couldn't go there yet.

After the shut downs, I’m so tired of ordering online. Cuse is lucky to have one of the few malls still around that actually has cool stuff in it. I hope it’s issues get sorted out.

Europe huh?
What could possibly go wrong there?
