KenPom Rankings

I miss the RPI days. I have no freaking clue how it was calculated, but I just liked my morning routine of checking realtimerpi.com after a win to see how much we rose.

You can use this link right from the NCAA... it has NET for every day, and also a Previous day column. You can see it fell from 73 to 81 yesterday. In part because margin was a bit below expected for this level of team, and probably a few spots related to other moving parts... 70's and 80's are tightly bunched I would imagine.

Since you (kinda) asked:

RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25)

WP = Winning percentage
OWP = Opponent's Winning percentage
OOWP = Opponent's Opponent's Winning percentage

Home win counts as 0.6 of a win, road win counts at 1.4 of a win, neutral court win counts as 1.0.

Similarly, home losses count as 1.4 of a loss, a road loss counts as 0.6 of a loss, etc.

And there you have it.

Currently, SU has a NET of 81, and an RPI of 96. Both have been trending down lately (by down I mean lower numbers, which is good).
An awful metric and much worse than the NET. Even easier to game.

Had more to do with how your opponents performed than how you actually performed on the court. I feel like people here forget how terrible it was. I remember one year we were left out when we won 5 games including 2 OOC against tournament teams mainly because our RPI was in the high 50’s.

I remember the Missouri Valley conference was the first to figure out how to game that system. Play teams that are about the 200 level non conference and play them on the road. Get 1.4 rather than .6 points. Play teams that have historically good records in their conference. That was the key, opponents winning percentage was way overweighted. It didn’t care if the teams you played were good or not, just had to be good enough to be good in their conference, (Also Playing so many home games non conference back in the day crushed our RPI).

Boise, Utah state, etc are the new Northern Iowa. Good metrics every year, but never really beat anyone of note, and of course, never went anywhere in the tournament.

My question is: how good is Hofstra really and what will their analytics be at the end of the year if they perform how they're expected to perform in their conference? Can they realistically bump up to a Q2 loss for us? If so, then that wasn't a terrible loss.

I understand that it wouldn't be very accurate because teams rankings fluctuate, but I'd love a tool that allowed you to see how a team's Kenpom and NET would change by applying wins or losses. Something like in recruiting where you can see how your team's recruiting rankings are effected by adding players. It would provide us something to reference on what Cuse would need to do from here on out and generate discussion.

IDK, we just need something else to talk about because this place can be tiresome when it's all just "we suck" and "fire so-and-so" lol

Considering the majority of their remaining schedule is Q3 and Q4s i would say that barring an undefeated run it is very unlikely they move up to the 75th spot required to qualify as a Q2. On top of that, they're predicted to get 6 more loses so it would be more likely they finish in the 100s

The analytics guy has been a flop. SU is always late to the party and fell for Kline's grift.
It may just be that our coaching and system is making the roster look worse than it should be.

That one game vs. St Johns when Elijah Ingram went 1-72 from three and Mike Jarvis almost murdered him in the middle of the game. That's all I can think of.

We did a pretty good job of holding Hofstra to ONLY 64% from 3

I have to disagree with you there, I actually think if we are getting a new coach. What will attract them to Syracuse is if they are able to retain the front office that was built and maybe even a lot of the players on the roster.

Respectfully, almost everyone, if not all college basketball programs in the P4 have a front office now. We aren’t special for having one. I’m sure the new coach would want to retain a few players. We definitely have some talent on this team! Coaching is the huge issue

Agreed, I’m saying this specific front office they would be attracted to the job if they can retain it.

If you stop Louisville from making 3’s they are very beatable. Zero inside game.
Please find a way to communicate this to the staff... before we see them go off for like sixteen of them.

Louisville has some shooters, but their offense is as repugnant as ours. I think they do even less than us.

Are you talking about the analytics guy that left because the Knicks hired him!? His role had nothing to do with scheduling opponents.
