KingJoseph Edwards "not" in the portal

IMO David O. Showed plenty as a 3rd down guy. He is going to have a big year. KJE was at best 4th DE option. He was a good self promoter but some guys talk the talk, and others walk the walk. Not a big loss IMO.
I too am optimistic that Slimy David is going to make an impact this season.

Same thought on size. Also not sure if anyone else noticed but the social media was a little out of control. Not partying but going instagram live every 5 mins he was doing something is prob not really a good idea.
Better to be rid of him now

Is the portal open now or does he have to wait until the next one after this coming season? I'm not totally surprised given he didn't play much last Fall. Wonder if he didn't see much prospect to play more.
It’s only open if a team allows you to enter because your’re not on scholarship. Meaning it’s more like a cut. That said, clearly it was a mutual decision to move on.

The trouble is the name with which he was saddled by his parents. How would all of you in this discussion like to live your life with "King" appended onto you first name as a prefix. The pressure to live up to it; the taunts if you were not a "King" in your particular endeavor, but just an ordinary (or even an above average) guy. If he is discontented, is it because wearing his name too heavy a weight?

Never a good sign when the athlete's are "away from the program."

Zeed - Gone
Barnes - Gone
KJE - Gone

That's some talent right there, but if you can't do the simple things then it's best for the program he moves on. Culture is huge. It's the building blocks for a successful program. Once you establish your culture, everything can follow.

I will be interested to see where KJE ends up. He's up to 240lb. At 6'4 240 he had the potential to be a good pash rusher at this level.

Ishaq played with the NJ Giants so can’t really knock his college career
He played for the NJ Giants for about as long as RJ Anderson played for the then Oakland Raiders. He had no college career basically. Not to mention had off the field issues.

I could live with “King”. Would probably struggle with Scientific Map though

Awesome

Fran’s relationship with these players seem so different than what a usual coach-player relationship is. We won’t ever know what actually happened here and with others that left the program. But I think Fran is establishing meaning into having a spot on the Syracuse football roster. If you don’t want it or don’t put the work in to maintain it, then go and we will help you find that place and in the future if you want it. Fran and team is too connected and know so many more players that want this opportunity so bad that they couldn’t offer them at the time in favor of you. If someone doesn’t want to be here and it’s shown to others. Well now the culture is tarnished. Excellence can only be achieved here if everyone is all bought in.

So let’s not undersell King here. 6’4 and up to 240. Has quickness. He is going to bring value to a new team. He is not the first young man who maybe had to navigate certain challenges BUT he is the first freshman ever at Syracuse who upon his arrival did some charity work of his own doing.(prett sure about that claim at least) I will tip the cap to him on that one. So it didn’t work….he seems like a good young man knowing what little I do. Talented players portal All. The. Time. Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, etc see players departing every year. Just have to reload.

It’s sad because of what could’ve been, but you have to move and accept the situation. I hope we will be well and he will do well at his next stop. The only way to go is to accept and hope for a win win situation for everyone.

Maybe he was concerned where he was ranked among the other defensive ends and wasn't able/willing to switch to linebacker where his size is better suited. Fran probably placed him outside the 105 limit so he had the choice of staying or going if he wasn't happy. I hope he finds happiness wherever he lands.

There is no doubt Ishaq underperformed statistically in college. My point is he showed enough to get himself invited to NYG camp, signed to practice squad and activated to play in NFL games.
Similar to DeVito, say what you want about his college career but he played in the NFL.
That’s very rarified air.

Valid point. Life is hard enough without additional pressure of needing to attain royal status just to live up to your name.
Hopefully he doesn’t see it that way

I would say that is to be determined. Barnes was a starter as a true freshman. KJE put on 20 good lbs. Zeed was starting and producing.
Barnes started 4 games, 2 we lost, had 10 tackles 3 pd's and 0 ints. We loved the idea of him as an athlete and 4 star but actual on field production improved with Kerr in his place. Peal is a bigger, faster (10.75), and was higher rated (92) 4 star.

Zeed played 2 games and had 8 recs and 0 TDs. We loved the idea of him as a 4.3 burner that we hadn't seen in decades on the hill... Cook is also a 4.3 burner as are many of the younger guys now vying for starting roles.

KJE was arguably our biggest recruiting win but hit campus soft and light. He had 7 tackles, 3 sacks (all against Holy Cross) and didn't seem to completely buy in to Fran's program per multiple comments made in interviews. Reese coming into replace him is a literal and figurative grown ass man at 27 years old and appears to live in the weight room.

I had the same high hopes for all 3 but production wise it may well be addition by subtraction if all replacements buy in where the former hadn't

The DSA provision of House presents an odd situation. P4 football scholarships have been guaranteed for four years since 2012. Scholarship can only be rescinded for non football reasons in a limited number of exceptions - academic or violations of terms of the scholarship that would make them ineligible to compete. DSA portal window only applies to players that would not have a spot under the new roster limit of 105. It was initially floated to allow walkons who were being cut to get to that limit a chance to transfer. Then a final compromise was agreed to allowing those players to be grandfathered in and NOT count against roster limits making the DSA provision irrelevant. Not sure how Edwards fits under that unless he is one of the exception cases.
Compound that with Wildhack’s statement that he and Fran agreed not to go beyond 85 scholarships and take a look at the current assumed football roster including summer enrollees.
Will be interesting to see the updated roster when camp opens.
