Kline exposes Autry's flaws

I do not see how you can win with a shooting guard who has no strengths besides going to the basket right handed.
But he’s very good at that. Ask NCS if he’s any good. They and a lot of other teams couldn’t stop him getting to the rim. You put some shooters with him and he will get to the rim at will.

All this discussion about analytics aside, what worries me most, is that Red watched Carlos compete in practice for weeks (albeit against our horrible defensive players) and thought he was going to be solid at point.

Many of us liked what we saw in the exhibitions, but two games in we all knew we were in trouble at point.
I have to admit in the two exhibition games he looked very good.

In a vaccum some of the guys are fine. How Red thought they would fit together on a team is shocking.

Unfortunately this off-season every transfer has to complement JJ assuming he stays because he is so deficient shooting and defending.
He’s staying:)

He is. He would be fine as a 6th man. He can't be one of your main guys with the lack of defense, 3 point shooting, and FT shooting. No good team is playing a 28% three point shooter and a player who has as many turnovers as assists at guard 35mpg.

This is really why Moore should have been force fed more minutes this year. The season was lost anyway. And Carlos and JJ play as equally bad on defense so that excuse doesn't suffice for me.

Do you help with this? How many of the complainers are shelling out 4 figures or even 3? You want better players It is not about the coach, the facility, the education etc. All that matters is who will pay the most. It is delusional to think it is anything else. You want to bitch about the coaching, forget the talent evaluation B.S. bitcch about their fund raising chops. That is more than half the job now. If 33000 fans who could fill the dome gave 100.00 each that would be 3.3 million dollars. What kind of roster would that build? Individual stars are getting 7 figures. To really ompete with the top schools all 33000 fans would need to shell out250 to 300 each and that includes rhe kids. Let those figures sink in and if you don't already, do your part anf write a check.
Appreciate the post, I guess I should turn in my SU fan card as I don’t donate enough in your eyes and therefore dont have the right to to engage in discussion about the sorry state of the program.

It will just lead to poor roster construction next year. Like the announcers who nailed it said for JJ to be a valuable piece in today's modern basketball, he needs to be a lock-down defender, and well, he is not that. As mentioned, he will probably be back and probably be the focus of the team and leader, so I would hope that they bring in 4 players better than him to start around him, but I don't know.

Good coaches don't have to overpay guys. We might have to. Why come here for 750 and stink if you can go play for Hurley for 500K and be on a winning program.

You and me both. If this is what the state of college ball is going forward then count me out.

So why did Kansas pay $2 million for a guy from Wisconsin who averages 6.5 points per game? It was a huge mistake and they OVERPAID! So much for going cheaper to play for a winner. They were preseason number one and are not very good. Are they better than SU? Sure, but don’t spill nonsense for guys taking less to play for a winner.

He didn't get 2 million. People here exaggerate NIL deals.

...and develop and improve your game under Hurley.

(vomit)

Yes he did. The Kansas media has addressed it on several occasions, but I guess he must be fake news.
There is no way. The latest article I saw from last week had him around a million. It's probably less. Agents always throw the top number out there. That's why you need to take some of these deals with a grain of salt.

I know that this is where we are in college athletics - and how it will be - but the thought of having to actually pay a guy like Lampkin to play basketball at Syracuse University is a difficult one for me. The discussion itself is tough to read.
At least it's a little more above board now

I just can't believe schools and players can't commit to each other for more than a year

Unfortunately, those game were against D2 schools. Carlos was a good player at Hofstra, a low-major D1. So it shouldn't be a surprise that he looked good vs. D2.

He just doesn't have the skills to level up to P5 D1. I feel for him, I'm sure he's trying his damndest. But every athlete has a ceiling, and the staff completely misjudged what his ceiling is.

Sure, not having a healthy Westry hurt.

But the problem with your theory is that you need complete or well-rounded players who are good on both ends of the court, and none of these guys are well-rounded. They all have major holes in their games and most of them are not good defenders, save for Taylor, who is solid. Starling is a very good offensive player but he’s not a good defensive player. I blame the staff for that because there’s no reason a quick and athletic guy like JJ should be that poor at defense.

Having five so-so guards does nothing for a team, because you can only play two at a time. I’d rather have two star guards and one solid backup and then a developmental freshman like Choppa.

I don't see how any coach, unless he's mailing it in, would allow his team to play this kinda defense- w/out repercussions or hint of improvement.
Fans are forgiving- if you show effort night in and night out, we won't like it if we lose, but we'll appreciate the extra effort.
Against any team w/ a pulse, our defense is a turnstile. Ridiculous.

Yup. We'll see what Kline can do to influence acquisition targets with Autry. Clearly, left to their own devices, the staff's player evaluation skills are lacking.
Agreed.

So he's not a good in-game coach, he's not a great schematic pre-game coach and he's bad at talent evaluation. I'd rather not have to build an 8-man team around the head coach to compensate for his flaws.

We might be around 16-11 if Starling and Freeman did not get hurt. Add those two guys and we would be a tourney team.

What 5 additional games is this team winning if Starling and Freeman were both healthy all year? They weren’t playing well even when the whole team was healthy early in the season.

Also, a vast majority of teams have some type of injuries. For instance, you could say Syracuse might have won at ND if Starling was playing, but ND also had their top scorer out for that game. So we can’t just discount their injuries and play “what if” with Syracuse.

He looked outstanding in the first exhibition game, came down to earth a bit in the second, and then the struggles were on full display by the first game against Le Moyne.

This will probably sink like a lead balloon but can we sound out John Beilein as an assistant? He's doing TV. Doesn't his son still live in CNY?
