Class of 2022 LB Elijah Herring (TN) Portal to FSU

tough to say anything negative about us at this point compared to them.
Yeah the only thing is maybe that our defense statistically was better with Tony White at Cuse when he left to Elijah Robinson in his first year here. Though I think it’s only fair to really judge Elijah Robinson defense next season when we are expected to upgrade physically to play his style more consistently. We still had 3-3-5 concepts at times this year since we were smaller physically and it helped turn TDs into FGs at times (bend don’t break).

In this situation I’m sure the money is a major factor of it. But why the commitment before our visit on Tuesday? FSU will be running the 3-3-5 defense he was used to at Memphis, so they had that going for them. If this is a signed and sealed commitment that means our visit was cancelled then. If this is the case, am I the only one that is suspicious on if anything was negatively said against our program considering the Cuse connections on the defensive side of the ball at FSU.
Maybe after meeting with Tony White he was extremely comfortable that the 3-3-5 had the same terminology and a good showing could put him in the league?

This one doesn't seem that deep, I don't think there's a big conspiracy. Until we put together a bunch of good seasons in a row, FSU will always be a bigger draw than SU.

I mean I get it to play for White but Norvell is a terrible coach and has no clue what he’s doing. I can’t believe kids believe in him at all
He’s a one year rental, probably had about 20 minutes to think about the offer before they pulled it.

SU is going have to pony up $15-$20 million annuall to pay players if we hope to compete in the new era of collegiate athletics. We don’t have the large fan base NIL to compete with state schools who prioritize football. If this means we have to get less expensive coaches in the Olympic sports and even discontinue some sports, then that’s what we’ll need to do.

It’s all about football, basketball and men’s lacrosse.

My son just graduated from UCSD and they require every student to pay a collegiate athletic fee. I think we paid $600 per quarter for this fee. I think Syracuse is going to have to charge every student money as an athletic fee to help fund player salaries. If every student was charged $250/semester that would total $7.5 million, or half the total player salary budget
That doesn't work under the current system. The money has to come from outside the university. If that type of system ever does come to fruition, watch out. Private schools will never keep up.

That’s exactly what’s happening come July. Just waiting on final court approval of the settlement.

It’s revenue sharing - but the school can fund how they pay it however they want. Fees, donors etc. Syracuse is trying to fundraise to cover part of it with the rest coming out of the overall budget.

I would be amazed if some sports weren't dropped.

I believe I already established in another thread that the students pay about $2k-$3k per year to the tune of $40mm - $60mm a year to the AD. That was why I said we shouldn’t be so critical of their attendance at 6 games.

I was thinking it would be men's sports

Have to drop some non revenue sports. The money doesn’t add up otherwise and I don’t see universities cutting budget elsewhere.

The revenue generating sports can be self sufficient if they don’t have to fund lots of other programs. As it stands given the revenue share percentage is the lowest of any sports league, they can still subsidize some….but there’s gotta be some that get killed from a scholarship and funding perspective.

Wonder what will happen to title IX?
I’m curious if we will see broader legal challenges to it. There were lawsuits filed over some of the expanded regulations this past fall. Once players get paid in certain sports, you’re going to have someone come up with an argument as to why it shouldn’t apply anymore or should only apply to non revenue sports equally with a carve out for the big ones.

Maybe, considering SUNY sports are crap, New York State should adopt Syracuse sports as THE STATE'S college sports and contribute to give SU a chance to compete. And, with their support, Syracuse University could become a huge contender in revenue sports. People will fire back with, "why would the state support a private university?" Is Buffalo going to be that school? Albany? Binghamton (sorry Adam jk). New York isn't set up to have a strong state school be a force. Only Syracuse can be that school. So, why not? It needs to be sold the correct way.

Are you sure these numbers are accurate? Students paying $2-3k a year seems way too much for an athletic fee

Never happening.
