Lemoyne loses by 41 to UConn

If he's more fiery during news conferences than during games then we are in trouble.

He seemed quite active on the bench, talking to players and refs, gesturing as to what he wanted. Was he 'fiery'? I don't know. But he was certainly involved. I thought his attitude at the presser stemmed form the fact that he's as worried about the team as we are but felt they needed defending.

My comments are based on his lack of response with the SU players even attempting to get back on D during several possessions. That is completely, utterly inexcusable even at the middle school level.

The back to back national champions uconn? The best team with the best coach ? That UConn? Yeah they are good

"That UConn." Is that the same school that not too long ago was considered a peer school? And, a school by many here, to be below our stature? Not to mention, even a shorter time ago, the know it alls here laughing about UConn's plight, and stooping to such low standards in hiring the likes of Danny Hurley. That UConn?

Define "lack of response". Were you close enough to hear what he said to the players?

Lemoyne is not a good team. Neither are we.

That's all there is.

It's fine. Some of us have known, some of us are coming around, some are still in denial.

Some us have known going back to the Frank Howard years and how the program was/had been deteriorating and on a concerning decline then. Some folks were in denial then, throwing shade at posters debating same objectively and constructively. Some of those shaded posters...well, let's just say, can no longer play here.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I love Red and hope he succeeds as much as anyone, but your responses here are getting ridiculous. Ignoring and denying what is right in front of us won't make it better, and it certainly won't stop some well-deserved criticism on a fan board.

Clearly Da Nile isn't just a river in Egypt...

That didn't answer my question.

Interesting. I didnt watch. Is it your takeaway that means it’s not necessarily completely on the guys for not being physically able to stay in front and also relates to coaching not demanding correct positioning and help? Honest question.
When you switch 1-4, 1-5, often you get a guard covering a wing or PF or center Rolling to the hoop. The benefit is that you are already in good defensive position. The downside is mismatches. That is a disaster on the pick and roll unless you have good help or rim protector. That’s why Houston, Baylor teams were so good on D. 4 guys who could guard all positions when necessary.

As far as coaching, they are trying, and likely why Freeman sat so much.

But from what I have seen, rotations can likely be slightly improved by sitting those who don’t or won’t get it, but foot speed is what it is. I would like to see zone and Mcloud.

lets hope Red is not as stubborn about no zone as JB was about only zone

Just trying to give you something to look forward to.

That program had a plan and stuck to it. Hurley's first two years stunk (3rd year impossible to really know with the covid) and he didn't get run off.
Uconn played insane D and gave max effort from the beginning of the Hurley era. The exact opposite of the Red era so far.

I think with Eddie it is likely footspeed. Also, our guards do not appear as quick as Connecticuts. Frankly, I do not think any of our guys would start over any of theirs at this point.

This comparison shouldn't be about point differential or UConn being back to back champions. They have a bunch of new pieces as well, and the way SU and UConn played on defense says a lot about coaching. When you have an SU team that doesn't even try to get back on D and the coaches are just as apathetic, well... that's something that shouldn't even happen at the modified or JV level. It seems to explain a lot about the team.
We don't have good/competent coaches that's the the main difference between us and uconn

Remember all of the AAC jokes about a decade ago and they'd be derelgated to club basketball?

Guilty, although some of it I'm sure was just wishful bashing using my heart more than my head.
I remember comparing them to the plights of Houston and San Francisco and their sudden downfalls.

10 years later UConn is close to a blue blood, Houston has become a national powerhouse the last 5 years. Heck even San Franciso has been better than us this year and the 3 prior years.

I think some people underestimated how important Judah was last year. For everything he did that we didn’t like, he was a very good college player.

Our front court on offense I like. We have some of everything there.

But as for guards, we don’t have a “get to the rim guy”. And we don’t have a “shoot off the screen/curl guy”. We had so many good ones in Gerry, Andy, Buddy, JG3. We have shooters on this team, but not that kind of shooter. They didnt need the “good looks” JJ and Bell need. The guards are helped by the fact that Lumpkin is a good passer AND can finish in the paint. Without him at center, our guards would look even less effective.

i’m not sure the harsh criticisms of Reds coaching are fair. (I think he lets lazy or bonehead play slide too much, but I’m not calling for his head either). His job assembling the team might be a legit criticism. But if you don’t have a point guard and you don’t have an obvious leader, it’s not easy to overcome that with x‘s and o’s. I’m not giving up on Carlos, but I would’ve taken The kid from Lemoyne and especially Cox from Colgate over him.

Judah could’ve made a lot more staying here one more year.

It wasn't a question so much as an attempt to get me and everyone else to ignore their lying eyes.

I responded to a statement that "When you have an SU team that doesn't even try to get back on D and the coaches are just as apathetic". The definition of apathy is a "lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern". I have no problem with criticizing the players for not getting back on D or even the coaches for not teaching them to do so but to say that the coaches lack interest, enthusiasm or concern is to be a mind reader, unless you've heard them saying something that revealed that. I asked you if you were close enough to the bench to hear what they said and you never answered that.

I'm not defending how this team has played. It's alarming, as I clearly indicated in my Downside posts:

You might also have a look at the question I asked on tonight's Adrian Autry Show:

That's hardly "an attempt to get me and everyone else to ignore their lying eyes".

I just don't like it when fans presume that they want to win more than the players or coaches do. This is our pastime. Basketball is their lives.

I see the same thing SWC sees. Autry spends 90% of the game on his feet and extremely involved. No idea what you’re talking about so who has the “ lying eyes?”

Sorry to not be part of the denialism Vulcan mind meld and express some frustration with what's been abundantly clear over the first two games. I know you guys have a lot invested in the program, but that doesn't mean posters here can't express concerns about what they see happening on (and immediately adjacent to) the court.

Plenty of other posters have made very similar observations to mine. I guess we're all delusional.

I didn't presume that at all. I'm sure Red wants to win more than anyone. Most coaches do, but wanting to win and doing what is necessary to put your team in a position to win are universes apart.

I'll be thrilled if Red brings this group together and they keep improving. As I noted elsewhere, some groups just take longer to gel. It's not like these guys just forgot how to get back on D. The pieces are there... but so are some very alarming signs. And it's okay to talk about those signs.

My favorite in the early to mid 2010s were the "we shouldn't schedule UConn because it makes them relevant" posts. People actually wrote that unironically.
My favorite was we should hire Jay Wright away from Villanova.
