Lemoyne loses by 41 to UConn

I watched a little bit of it. Lemoyne was able to beat their guys off the dribble too. The difference was, they rotated with sound help defense. Yukon had three or four bigs who were willing to slide over and contest the layup. They were quicker and more athletic than our big guys and made it look easy. The other thing they did was switch on screens. It allowed someone to always be in front of their player rather than chasing him. But again, they have the athletes to do it, and it’s easier to do if you have a rim protector.

also, Lemoyne missed a lot of the open threes they made against us. Yukon frustrated them and took them out of the game mentally which we weren’t able to do.

but watching this, it made it very apparent just how bad our help defense really is, and our defensive scheme in general. Freeman, Lumpkin, and Davis in 76 minutes yesterday, had a total of one foul. No aggression. No one even tries to rotate. How can it be possible that we have three bigs (two of them veterans), who have no instinct on how to rotate or have never been expected to do it?

if we can’t get this figured out, we are going to have to play zone and live and die by three-point shooting. Texas, Tennessee will score 100, all at the rim if we don’t.

Wow! 1 foul! Thats surprising and a horrible sign. Sometimes you suck on defense and end up fouling bc at least you had effort.
Terrible Def and a lack of fouls is a Red Flag.

I didn't presume that at all. I'm sure Red wants to win more than anyone. Most coaches do, but wanting to win and doing what is necessary to put your team in a position to win are universes apart.

I'll be thrilled if Red brings this group together and they keep improving. As I noted elsewhere, some groups just take longer to gel. It's not like these guys just forgot how to get back on D. The pieces are there... but so are some very alarming signs. And it's okay to talk about those signs.

I have many of the same concerns and, as I demonstrated, I have expressed them,

So far after 2 whole games against small schools in our own backyard, that literally circle the game against us as the most important, we have looked absolutely terrible.
Scary bad, unbelievable and not the Syracuse team Ive known through ups and downs for 40plus years.
I witnessed a recent practice that was supposed to end at 5:30, lets just say it didnt and went longer in minutes than Eddies number. Why? Bc they were running a scrimmage-like drill focusing on rebounding, fast breaks and mostly defense including communication, shifts, help and switches. It was intense, all coaches very much involved. When a mistake was made everyone in the building knew about it. Noone was leaving until they got "it" right.
Two glaring weaknesses so far...Defense and fast breaks and they seem to focus on that.
Last year the roster was a mess.
This year the roster has all the pieces needed to be successful but to me it is a complicated puzzle. To the coaches it seems to be a complicated puzzle. Time will tell. Time is needed. How much time will determine how successful we will be.
If we have an unsuccessful year (missing tourney) it wont be bc of a lack of talent or from a lack of effort or incompetence from the coaches. It will be because of team chemistry etc...do we have an alpha? ...Do we have a leader? ..Do we have the players willing to play their roles?...Is someone capable to take over in crunch time?...Do we have bench players to insert for a defensive and offensive spark? I believe strongly we do... how long until it all comes together?
Our coaches know what our weaknesses are, they know how to coach...how well is up for debate...but at some point the players gotta figure it out and produce...
I think everyone will figure it out in time to have a successful year.

It's not about wins and losses necessarily. It's about establishing identity and core concepts of what your program will be. Hurley had definitely established his style even when they were losing.

I'm sorry but so far Red has just talked about it. Nothing has been established other than bad defense and shot selection and that is not a core value in any winning program.

Huh? What did Hurley establish his first two seasons? I guess toughness and stout defense but they were still bad his first two years, even on defense. And UConn had no offensive identity to speak of Hurley’s first 3-4 years. Until he finally started listening to Luke Murray about implementing modern offensive concepts. Red has been on the job for one season. Let’s give him some time.
