He is not guaranteed $4M. He's only guaranteed the signing bonus. If he's cut at any point he would not realize the value of the remainder of the contract.

There are very clear lines of distinction in NFL contracts on what is guaranteed, and what is not.

He is only guaranteed that signing bonus.

They could easily cut him in August and they would only owe him that 118k.

True, but the one position to get to the NFL early is RB. Do your thing and get to that second contract as soon as possible. The younger you can get to it, the better your chance at a good payday. Such a short shelf life at that position in the NFL.

Right but if he gets cut, and as a 7th round pick that’s likely, then you aren’t even getting that first contract, let alone the 2nd

I remember when the Giants drafted Butch Woolfolk ahead of Joe Morris, and little Joe made him expendable in short order. LQA has a unique work ethic and extraordinary toughness. Somehow I think he’ll find his way.

That’s why players are always hunting for guaranteed contracts.

If it’s a guaranteed contract the team is required to pay them that amount.

It also counts for more on their salary cap hit if it’s a guaranteed contract vs non guaranteed.

Usually the first couple rounds of picks have fully guaranteed contracts which is why the players want to be a top pick.

Once you get past say 3rd/4th round the guarantees get less and less

Also not that unusual to sign a 4 year contract.

Especially a low risk one like the one Lequint signed with only 100k guaranteed.

That allows them to be able to easily cut him if it doesn’t work out but if he shows something this summer, they have him under contract.

Depends on the contract stipulations, but for a late round pick usually all that's guaranteed is the signing bonus. If they make the final squad they will get that season's salary
