Let’s play something out…..

If we end with 5 wins, ADJW should begin gauging interest in replacements and allow Dino the out of conference schedule in 2022 to save his job. Most of us agreed here. It was a bowl or game over this year.

The problem is the OOC schedule screams 2-2 next year and were going to be right in the same spot we are now.

How much can he really get? And is that the best use of the resources?

Hey, I know you just gave me $2M so I could hand it to a coach to not coach anymore, but can I also get $2M more for facilities improvements, and could you funnel another $1M to the players through NIL?

Or do we just raid the general fund? Tell the Shaw/Lou era that we want all our athletic department money back with interest?

Yep, look how long it took to get the IPF up.

IF Babers has to go after next year AND Marrone doesn't want to come back, why not try to hire the Wake guy? Clearly he's not s e xy enough for the big schools. Throw Babers dollars at him. Wake is not in the greatest shape. Clawson voluntarily took a 10% pay cut last year because of Covid-related budget issues.
Why would he make a move to a lateral program that's in worse shape? Stuff like that doesn't happen in modern football. Wake's finances are problably pretty similar to Syracuse's, he has his system in place, and he's already winning there. The fact that he's an Upstate native has absolutely no bearing on anything.

Dino has failed to win 3 P5 games in 5 out of 6 seasons. Next year with 10 P5 games, he needs to go 4-6 or better to make a Bowl. So we need him to be 2 games better than this year, and any other year outside of 2018, just to go 6-6.

There are maybe a baker's dozen of really good HCs out there. And maybe another dozen or so decent HCs out there. And inversely there are a dozen or so really bad HCs out there and another dozen or so of bad HCs. The vast majority of HCs are mediocre.

If Dino gets to a Bowl this year and next he certainly belongs in that mediocre group. The chances of his replacement being one of the good ones is the same as his replacement being one of the bad ones. And if we do get one of the good ones, he won't be here very long as there is a dearth of good HCs and much bigger programs than ours.

Dave Clawson is a pretty good HC. But before this year his best ACC record was 4-4!!!! Even with cupcake OOC schedules from year 3 through year 7 his record at Wake was 34-27 (17-22) or an average of 6.8-5.4 (3.4-4.4). Also his biggest win of his career was last week vs NC State. His 2nd biggest win is beating 23rd ranked NC State in 2017. He also was 0-3 vs Shafer. So if 6-6 isn't good enough and we can do better, who exactly are we getting? A good HC like Clawson wouldn't do much better.

We should be rooting for Dino to pull off a Bowl this year and next. And then extend him. It can get much worse than that.

Sucks but true. It's hard to find a good coach. Even at programs with a ton more history and resources than us. Ask Tennessee or Nebraska.

Money and more resources. Wake is the smallest P5 school out there. Tiny alumni support base in comparison to Cuse. That's true for football or any other budgetary need.

If you could tell me who is gonna be the guy who can recruit here then go for it.. If not then its gonna come down to some good luck on the field to get a good record here.

ESPN had a discussion on a show about the coaching vacanicies and who should go to these big open jobs. They decided its just shooting darts.. USC/Tex/Neb etc.. all failing over and over should tell you switching coaches doesnt always work.
No one's recruiting top 20 classes here, at least not unless we string together a few good seasons. We need someone who has a good eye for talent and a good developer of talent, like a Dave Clawson or Jamey Chadwell.

Tough thing is going to be we need to retain all of the assistants.

It seems we have reached our level in the new realm of college football. We have become Rutgers, we really don't have anything to offer recruits in this day and age. The good years of the past are irrelevant to this generation, they weren't born.
We are the bottom feeders of the ACC, and will probably be that way most years. Enjoy whenever we have a good season, but don't expect to get back to the late 80' s or 90's.

There are plenty of kids to recruit in the Northeast that go overlooked. The problem is you need to develop them. Most HCs have one foot out the door the minute they are hired. They are thinking about their next gig. So they recruit guys who can help now and not 3 years from now. We need a HC who is willing to go this route. I don't think Dino was when we hired him but he might be now. Which is another reason to keep him should he get to 6-6 vs trying for the next great thing.

One East Coast private to another isn't going to be a considerable improvement.

I just see no point in granting the built in excuses anymore if we can’t get a bowl this year

Out of conference screams 2-2, show me why we need to keep you and get to 3-1.

This team should already be bowl eligible now. But here we are. I love Dino but he’s got himself in this position.

Not going to happen. Lateral moves like that are very rare.

Nothing speeds these things up like hiring a coach that donors & fans are excited about and they believe in. See what Vanderbilt did last year. They hired a new coach and started building within 6 months.

Is there another P5 school that if they switched places with us would keep Dino for monetary reasons?

Out of all 65ish P5 schools maybe Wake?

We can look at other bottom dwellers and they have all pulled the ripcord when in a similar position.

It is very concerning that we talk about not spending $10m because the donors don’t exist. The donors don’t exist because we let the program get to this position. Consider how much earning potential has SU lost over the last 2 years, and how that hole grows over the next 5-10 years.

10 million might start looking like a small number in comparison to the opportunity cost of doing nothing.

Nebraska

Nebraska

Only because of the emotional attachment of Scott Frost as the prodigal son returned. If he was just some dude from southern cal he would be gone twice over.

Nebraska has the boosters with money

Have you seen their record this year? They might be pulling the thing back down lol

Perhaps, but I think there's some that would want to see the coach to prove himself first. That's at least what I thought happened when Dino was hired

There are eight ACC teams that are between 4-6 and 6-4. I don't think they'll all switch coaches.

VT is run by boosters that didn't like Fuente retiring the lunch pail and talking to Baylor, etc. They might be next in the Nebraska cycle.

Did any go 5-7 and 1-10 in the two previous years?
