Let's Talk About What We Need From the Portal

Shooting, Defense, Shot Blocking.
Kyle goes a long way towards helping our defense and a little ways toward helping our shotblocking. He can’t or doesn’t shoot, but he can catch the lob, which makes dribble penetration easier.

I generally agree with this. But JJ’s problem isn’t offense, it’s his poor defense. I think playing alongside a high level PG and a good SF who can shoot and play defense, JJ will get better shots, and 3-pt shooting will improve and the driving lanes will open up even more.

Agreed.

Building around one of one of the worst defensive players on the worst defensive team in my lifetime seems like a bold strategy.

I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised but my expectations are not high.

I know we've talked about this a lot leading up to the Portal opening, but some of the guys I'm seeing us involved with so far (Dickerson, a couple PGs who are not great 3 point shooters) - we have to all understand one thing. We have to have better offensive players than JJ.

We need GOOD STARTERS. Guys with COMPLETE games. We need 3 of those - a PG, a C and a SF. Good enough to start, with the ability to score, shoot, and defend.

We 3 starters, and 3 back-ups. Not six back ups, hoping 3 of them can start.
Toughness, mental and physical

That's not enough. If he's still our best offensive player, he will be taking too many shots at the end of the shot clock or the end of the game. That's not a winning formula. He's a good player, but he's better as a sidekick than you game winner on offense.

With Kyle in the fold, by far our biggest need is a versatile point guard who can turn Starling back into a scoring guard who doesn’t have to try to play point very often or for very long.

For that to happen, the PG has to be a good 3 point shooter.

Right, for me a versatile point guard is at least able to penetrate and find the open man, shoot a decent rate from three, defend well, deflect passes, break the press without everyone holding their breath the whole time, and finish the game by making their free throws.

It’s asking a lot, I hope we can find that guy and successfully recruit (pay) him.
