Line is -38.5

line is up to 40! Cue biggest (point spread) upset in FBS history! Wonder if that would be accurate.

Not even close...

UCLA was a 42-point favorite over New Mexico State 2013 (prior biggest: -41 vs. Cal State Fullerton in 1992)

Ohio State was a 50-point favorite over Florida A&M 2013 (prior biggest: -44 vs. Eastern Michigan in 2010)

Miami (of Fla.) was a 60-point favorite over Savannah State (prior biggest: -59 vs. Temple in 1993)

Miami-FL this week is only the third spread of -60 or above in recorded CFB spread history (since 1980)

The other two:
9/8/2012: Florida St -65 vs. Savannah St
9/1/2007: Hawaii -60 vs. Northern Colorado

EDIT, just saw you said spread upset.

Largest spread upset was...

1. Stanford 24, USC 23, Oct. 6 2007. The Cardinal: 1-11 in 2006, 1-3 to start the season, coming off of a 41-3 loss to Arizona State, not ranked since 2001. The Trojans: undefeated, ranked No. 1 in the Coaches Poll, only one season removed from a dominant three-year run in which they went 37-2 and won two national championships. Oh, and the game was being played in the Coliseum, where Pete Carroll's team hadn't lost in their last 35 games. Oh, and Stanford was starting backup quarterback Tavita Pritchard. That's how you end up with a whopping 41-point spread.

This broke the SU Greg Robinson 37 point spread record

Yes they will, margin of victory is a factor in the computer rankings. Why do you think they put up 59 on Wake.

They didn't put up 59 running up the score. They had an INT touchdown, a fumble return touchdown and their 59th point was the result of a 97 yard kickoff return touchdown.

They only scored 17 points in the second half (10 in the 3rd Q), the 7 points in the 4th was the kick return TD.

Didn't they have 6 ints

The BCS does not use any computer rankings that has margin of victory as a component.

True about the computer rankings they use. However, they use more than just computer rankings...

BCS standings
Compilation of standings
Since the 2000 regular season, the BCS Standings have been compiled by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

The Standings include three components: USA Today Coaches Poll, Harris Interactive College Football Poll and an average of six computer rankings. Each component will count one-third toward a team's overall BCS score.

All three components shall be added together and averaged for a team's ranking in the BCS Standings. The team with the highest average shall rank first in the BCS Standings.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Harris Interactive College Football Poll are comprised of humans who are influenced by margins of victory.

Well since my post was responding specifically to a post about the computer polls used, I stand by my post. Of course humans can be affected by anything. That goes without saying.

That's the point, FSU is locked in at #2, they don't need to impress anybody with a margin of victory at this point, all they need to do is keep winning.

The debate is over.

LOL. "The science is settled".

Stanford or even OSU might make it in if FSU ran the table with squeakers.

Now the debate is over.

I heard a guy last night on ESPN radio talking about the BCS and remaining schedules of the top 5. He said if they all win out, FSU could end up in 5th due to the computer rankings.

Everything I've heard and read is that FSU is locked in as long as they win. Voters aren't going to jump OSU, Stanford, or Baylor ahead of FSU, and computers won't trump that.

Good post. Thank you. So, in other words, unless one knows, one doesn't know. Margins of victory will mean everything until the end of the regular season.

I heard that quote the person was specifically referring to there place in computer rankings not the actual bcs standings.

But Florida State and Alabama appear headed for a BCS championship game matchup if they can avoid being upset.
“Just win,” BCS analyst Jerry Palm of CBS.com said about Florida State. “They control their own destiny now. Just win.”

Just win. Not Just win by a lot.
