I have always liked this kid. He is in my opinion the best pure passer on the roster. He simply was not a good fit for the O that Mc wanted to run and he sure as heck was not the triple threat option QB that Lester needed. He can make every throw in the book and has a cannon for an arm and good size. If he can master the mental part i think that he can make the Dino O go. Would be great to have him as a solid number 2 so we can RS Cull if needed

Please I hope this is not their plan.

I've been very vocal on Wilson's issues. But in Babers we trust - his track record with QB's is beyond solid.

wilson had some good throws as a starter, he also had to deal with some oline issues and played against some decent D when he wasnt ready. in a perfect world he would barely have seen the field yet and we wouldnt have seen Dungey at all..

I don't think he has much experience running the ball as the other 2 do.

I would imagine he comes out of spring as #3. right?

Yeah - this system makes that less of an issue. I've always been worried about his decision making, esp under pressure. If Babers can fix that, he has the arm.

AND I think Dungey's upside is way higher.

Agreed.

Re-emphasizing your point...it is my understanding that Wilson's issues have always been mastering the playbook and decision-making related. Great arm and athletic enough to get by, but his pocket presence and read progressions have held him back.

This system is much more friendly for Pocket Passers than the previous systems.
I thought the veer and shoot option style, while certainly having the vertical air option, was predicated on being able to scare people into thinking you can take it around the corner or stop and throw quickly.

doesn't seem like much of a pocket pass offense to me.

From what I understand about the system, and heaven knows that isn't much, the coverage is read before the snap, meaning the QB isn't going to go through as many reads for the sake of speed. That's why the screen, flat-throw, and deep ball are so prevalent in this offense- they're are plays where single coverage is most likely.

From the looks of it, guys who have starred in this system (Griffin excluded) aren't particularly fleet footed.

As I understand it, ground success is built on keeping the back seven pinned back into pass coverage, which allows for 5-4 blocking and more openings at the line.

QB throws, RB runs. But again, I could be wrong.

You are correct. The QB and WRs make reads when they get to the line and that determines what they run. I think I read somewhere he starts out with a few base plays that have the reads built in and as they pick it up it grows.

In watching the Bowling Green - Tennessee game, it seemed there was a communication step just before snapping the ball, adjusting the play to the defensive formation. No huddle, just a lookback to the sideline and chatter at the LOS. Seemed reflexive by nature, with numerous play choices from each formation. An option offense with the options starting before the snap.

Fingers crossed that Dino can "coach up" players - looks like he has a good history of doing so at BG and the other school he was HC.

I think a lot of players under SS and the gang were often confused by the inconsistencies on O - starting with Cool Kid and to a lesser degree Lester. Wilson especially always looked very stiff/tight out there - reactive rather then athletic.

He certainly passes the look test with size and arm. Funny thing when the brain catches up to the body with athletes. Maybe he will be a pleasant surprise this year.

I don't get how so many board "Experts" can say that Wilson cannot be the #2 QB. He has little experience and is still young. The little time he played he had some good moments. Outside the Duke game in which he was bad (although I believe he was still hurt and at the very least we had a mash unit for an OL that day). Are people giving up on a kid based just on that game?

He's not good enough to be the backup and a kid coming off an ACL tear who hasn't played in even a HS game in 18 months is clearly a better alternative since no one has seen him throw a pick yet.

I think babers' system will be more important than individual personnel. I'm really looking forward to seeing Dungey but think Austin will be ready to 1. Identify vulnerable route 2. Get ball to runner/receiver 3. Repeat until score. There's not much time to dwell on the success or failure of the previous play, but the ability to get the ball downfield will be important for any QB. Dungey, Austin, Culpepper, and Mahoney are all fortunate to play for Babers. They should have a lot of fun...

I think it's clear watching him in the last two systems that he had trouble making reads under duress. How much was him and how was system is a good question to ask.

But outside of that drive vs Central Mich last year, I thought he's looked lost.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him really take off in Babers system, though.
