Looks like we could Doug Marrone as the next Tennessee Titans HC

not without a better job...now stay with me here...LINED UP AND SIGNED.
He had a better one lined up. Owners changed...Bills job in flux. Better job was the one where he gets paid $4M up-front and an additional amount for working as an assistant (which was his fall-back).

You can't believe that, can you?

I know only one other person on this board that would sell that.

Marrone couldn't seek another job without violating his contract if he didn't opt out. He couldn't line up another job and keep the Bills job that would be messed up.

He wanted out of Buffalo and exercised his option. He is getting an NFL HC job this offseason.

Wouldn't have minded him coming to the Phins with Tannehill.
Tannehill is a Coach Killer, like Cutler. Just good enough to keep you thinking this game is it, and just bad enough to make 8-8 seem like the Super Bowl

We had the exact same conversation here after he quit a year ago. Maybe someday you'll be right.

Marrone meeting with Miami on Friday. The same day the Dolphins are interviewing Dan Campbell

And that makes perfect sense.

Now, let's suppose YOU have a lucrative contract as the head of lets say... a McDonalds (stab in the dark). After one year, you are unhappy with the working conditions at this McDonald's for real or imagined reasons (does it really matter?). This is 1 of only 32 MacDonald's, so you make a lot of money. As an incentive for accepting this position, your contract includes a $4 million opt out clause without it ever counting as an offset against future salary. Are you a "quitter" if you exercise that option? If you still answer yes, are you still a quitter if one year after opting out, you made a salary on top of the 4 million option and you are offered an even higher paying job at another McDonald's?

If your answer is still yes, you are probably kidding yourself.

The butt hurt is strong with a large group here. They can't get over the fact that Doug took the NFL's millions just like any rational human would have.

Nah, at least not for me. Mostly at this point it's about razzing the Dougie Lovers.

Aw, who am I kidding? That's what I've always been about.

yes a QUITTER.

i would expect myself or any other mcdonalds employee to take the $$ and run.

not an NFL coach.

those guys are all freaks and power hungry.

there is no end for them till they either get dismissed into oblivion or end up like Coughlin.

what he did...was QUIT.

hey, maybe he is just a boy from the Bronx who wanted the payday and felt life was complete.

so he took the $$ and ran. in other words QUIT.

so why is he still looking for a job??

I guess only DM knows the "why," and I do appreciate your stance on this.

To me, it looks like he took a calculated and ego driven risk with a $4 million golden parachute. If he does get another NFL HC gig, it would be hard to argue against the fact that he won by "quiting" - to use your term. If he does not get another HC, he is a dope for tossing away the best job a football coach can hope for.

fair enough.

but lets not forget...he also walked away or quit on another 4million.

he had a 4 year deal, he took the 3rd and quit.

if he had believed in himself...he stays.

and gets the full 8 mill remaining, even if fired.

and has an excuse as to why...hey guys the old regime hired me, the new regime wanted a fresh start.

and maybe, hes not even looking for a job today.

instead...he QUIT.

Agreed, it was a dumb move for sure, he left the job 75% done like he did at Syracuse. He's the best coach to get you 75% there in America! And like you said, if Doug was working stiff like the rest of us and was just trying to get enough money to retire then so be it but like you said these guys are all barbarian caveman, power hungry freaks, exactly why many of them coach into their 70's when they could have retired years ago and picked up some cush job for 5 months a year on one of 55 channels covering the NFL. Marrone's family going to love moving again! Pack up the Play station and hover board junior we are hitting the road again for another 2 years until I quit again.

I also agree that Rex and Doug are basically on the same level.

He took a calculated risk. It didn't work out. He ended up with only $4M more and an asst. coach job.

I always thought it was gutsy and dumb (and in character) to possibly ruin his rep with NFL owners by quitting and taking advantage of an small little clause in his contract.

But I forgot these billionaire owners respect that stuff. They might like and respect him more now.

No doubt, we walked away from that last year of 4 mil. Your perspective is he quit b/c he didn't believe in himself enough to stay. I'm looking at it as he couldn't get what we wanted, took the money and walked b/c he believed in himself enough to think he could get another HC gig.

If one year later, he does get another HC (Giants, Browns?), doesn't that suggest he was "right" to believe in himself enough to walk?

That's possible. However, the difference is that Rex has at least proven himself in this league as a defensive mind by overseeing defenses that have produced at a high level using his system.

When has Marrone accomplished that with his offense?

Very true but Rex went 8-8 this year with Buffalo with probably a bit more on the roster. I would like to see what marrone does with a decent QB, I do think he needs to get away from Hackett if he gets another NFL job as his OC, but doubt that he will

Basically the same record with a hell of a lot more injuries to starters.

I would also like to see what Rex can do with a decent quarterback. NFL HC is a pretty easy job if you have a great quarterback. It's pretty difficult when you have a bad one.

I thought Taylor was decent no?

I thought Taylor was decent no?
Yes Taylor was definitely solid this year. But this was the first season he ever started a game and they didn't ask him to do a lot when it came to passing the ball.

Roman's system made Kaepernick look just as efficient his first couple years before he had to move the offense with his arm and failed. When Taylor was forced to throw the ball it didn't go all that well (0-5 in games with 30 or more attempts, 0 for 4 in chances to take the lead on final possession). But Taylor isn't the reason the Bills lost 8 games - that's on the defense. So I'm hopeful he can improve his deficiencies and maybe even end up being the guy.

This year I was curious to see what a veteran like Orton could have done in Roman's system. Instead of the unimaginative crud he played in under Marrone.

He didn't walk out on $4M either. That $4M would have been received next year. If he gets a new job making e.g. $5M, he will make $1M + Asst. Salary more than what he would have made in Buffalo. Even if he stays in Jax, he will not have walked away from $4M. He would be out $4M - Jax salary for 2 years.

The funniest thing about this thread is that people are arguing over language.

Fact - Marrone could have been a head coach last season, but chose not to be.

Maybe he will get one of the new HC jobs. If he does, past history suggests he'll lead a .500 team and not get along particularly well with the rest of his organization and the media. A team hiring him will look for more than that. So what are the reasons to expect more?
