Lou Holtz and one of the biggest stories of the last few years

By his reasoning, he is wrong, after a so, so Boston College team spent 60 minutes running over number 9 USC the Pac 12 must be a disaster.

Those Final Verdict segments show the true Lou Holtz. That guy is an angry, competitive guy and show how hard the ESPN PR does to keep him looking sane. Those Final Verdict segment suck.
I still remember this one with Tebow he took way too seriously and went nuts.

Yes, what's with that stupid segment? It is just about as dumb as anything I have ever seem on a sports show.

You are letting your personal hatred towards him cloud reasonable thinking. 1 silly mistake, not even worth another word
personal hatred? Where do you get that? You have no idea of my feelings for Lou holtz. None.

You seem to be going over edge over a mis-speak and a silly mistake. Must be hatred. No other way to explain it

No. And I'm on not going over the edge. I do wonder why you find it necessary to stand up so for Holtz. Is there a degree of love on your part? I just expect a degree of professionalism. He is one of many that don't have it on that network. He has one job that I know of. That is to talk about college football. I don't think it is asking too much to know what leagues teams are in. You obviously think that is asking too much. Agree to disagree.

It was a mis-speak and an easy mistake since Maryland just switched conferences. It wasn't even a big deal. Those in glass houses...well you know the saying

In the same segment, May talks about UCLA and calls them USC. I guess he's an idiot, too.

glass house? What It wasn't a mistake. He was making a point that didn't have a fountation of fact. This is simple stuff Stern. I am sorry you can't grasp it. Not the first time either.

It was a big enough deal for Retro to make a thread about it.. You don't like it, take it up with him.

My father once asked Lou Holtz to sign an autograph for my cousin. She had sent along a Sports Illustrated that featured Notre Dame and Holtz on the cover. My dad says Holtz very rudely refused to do it because he did not like what was said about him in that particular issue.

Give him a break, its an easy mistake to make. Not that big a deal. The guy already announced he is leaving ESPN after this year to retire. So he forgot what conference Maryland is in after they just jumped. Easy mistake to make

People just love to point out others mistakes like that that are so meaningless.
No - it's his job to know. He is not a professional.

Say for one minute we excuse him because Maryland just left this year. How in the world is it relevant to his point that the PAC12 is better than the ACC because a BIG 12 team just beat an ACC team?? It's not. He's a moron and has pretty much played the fool for years on ESPN. He is in real life an arrogant jerk and pretty much has been since he was at ND. I'm sensing some closet Irish sentiment. There's really no other explanation to defend him so hard.

Cause there are only 4 playoff spots and 5 power conference. Once conference will be left out looking in! So these inter-conference match-up's now matter more than ever.

He flubbed the conference and mis-spoke...burn him at the stake. His overall bigger point he was making was correct

what overall point was that? That because WVU beat Maryland the Pac is better than the ACC? How does that make sense?

Wouldn't that make it more imperative than ever for a sportscaster like Holtz to get his facts straight when discussing how these P5 conferences match up?

I don't know--it seems like a fairly minor mistake if it was just about him mis-attributing Maryland to the old conference. But for him to use that as justification in an argument he was making about conference strength, well that's when and why he opens himself up to this criticism. It's not like the Maryland switch hasn't been accompanied by extensive fanfare and off-the-field fireworks.

And to the cuseincincy point above, what does WVU have to do with the Pac12?

He mis-spoke...jesus some of you don't get it. He didn't mean the Pac 12 he meant the Big 12 and he still thought Maryland was in the ACC. He just mis-spoke...it's like some of you have never messed up at work before. He's on LIVE TV, it happens. Happens to the best of them. My god, what did Lou Holtz run over your dog or something? He mis-spoke...get over it!

Anyone with an IQ over 5 can figure out what he meant. But the Internet Trolls who live a perfect life...just love to pile on someone for a simple mistake that is no big deal. But now people like you will start FIRE LOU HOLTZ petitions probably sitting in your parents basement cause you have nothing else going on.

How do you know he meant the Big 12? Talk about attributions.

Normally I'd be inclined to side with your take. After all, sports media personalities are often on the air for hours on end, which means lots of time to make irrelevant, minor mistakes. But this isn't just mis-speaking or one mistake as you're trying to portray. He said that Maryland was in the ACC [mistake #1]. He said that WVU was in the Pac 12 [mistake #2]. And he then went on to say that this game outcome proved that the Pac 12 was better than the ACC instead of the Big 12 being better than the Big 10, which are the respective conferences that the two teams are actually in [mistake #3].

It's one thing to get a name wrong or mis-remember a fact here or there. That's totally understandable. It's another thing entirely to espouse completely flawed analysis based upon not understanding the facts. And clearly, Holtz forgot or didn't know the relevant facts underlying the topic at hand. He deserves criticism for that--we're talking about P5 here, not some development in the Sun Belt or Ivy League that few people are paying attention to anyway.

This wasn't just a slip of the lip [no pun intended, given his general mush-mouthedness] or getting a minor detail wrong--his entire analysis was flawed. Which is why he deserves criticism, as a college football studio "expert."
