Luke Carney in the portal

i'm just curious as to what portfolio he slides across the desk to his recruiter. his game tape here is crime scene gruesome. how do you get past that first interview with that much carnage on your hands ?

His HS tape is actually pretty good but I think the long ball arm strength is where the fit here may not have worked. That being said he was hitting guys 25-30 yards in stride so not sure why he couldn’t even try that here. Couldn’t have been any worse than Rickie.

Yep, it’s not like anyone else was able to throw deep once Steve went down.

Also makes absolutely no sense that he lacked adequate arm strength, yet we recruited him and locked in on him his entire senior year.

It’s either not true, or a strong indictment of the program’s ability to evaluate.

Yes. You honor agreements with families and players otherwise you quickly get a bad reputation. Is what it is. He didn’t cut it here. Everyone always assumes a backup is better. Sometimes they’re not. (As we all learned this year)
I don’t really agree with that.

Did Fran recruit the kid saying come here and you won’t play in year 1? I find that hard to believe especially with no QB1 at the time. If Fran did, then he made a dumb mistake. What is the point it isn’t like Carney was a big time recruit.

Also if Fran honored the agreement, why is Carney leaving?

If he wasn’t a fit how in the heck to you miss that badly? And why play him at all then? None of this makes sense.

So Fran will get a reputation for giving kids playing time? What kid doesn’t want that? Or Fran will get the rep that he wants to win games?

There is no point in redshirting kids anymore in the portal era. You only help their future team which we should not care about. Most kids don’t even want to redshirt so I don’t see much negative.

Came here to say something similar. Watched his tape when he committed and it was exciting, seemed like a lot of potential. There was some caution on this board about the level of competition he played against. I can’t make that assessment myself. All these kids have good film. Will be interesting to see where he plays this fall

Please. He has a weak arm. Do you really think they wouldn’t let him throw if he could.
They thought a walk-on lacrosse player was better. Tells you all you need to know. Sure, record-setting Texas QB but it was in the smallest Texas classification, small private schools. Carney appears to be a miss. Brown did him and his family good by preserving the year.

I wonder if there are multiple legit QBs that are interested in coming here. You can write off McCord’s performance as a unicorn, but 1/4 way through this season Angeli was leading the nation in passing too.

That might make this more of a desirable landing spot.

By legit, I’m talking about very high end FBS or someone with a history like McCord or Angeli.

The problem with bringing in a good QB could be the return of Angeli. Guys want to play

There’s different kinds of long balls though. If you can loft it high *and* far it gives receivers time (especially guys like JRS and Gill and Cook who can win 50/50 balls in single coverage), or fast *and* far you can do a back shoulder.

If all you can do is get it far in general terms then you can make some good HS plays but at this level you’ll just throw broken plays and picks. These corners and high safeties are all running 10.x in the dash and can turn on a heel.

I dunno. It would’ve been nice to see more but I guess I’m saying I think Luke’s eval as a RS project to add arm strength makes sense, he will. Good luck to him.
