Luke Carney

I think worth at least a question, right?
Texas Tech is starting their backup QB again this week. He was disappointing in play last week. Redshirt FR, QB rating of 109. They lost to ASU last week 26-22.

Had 2 losses as a true freshmen last year...2 interceptions in 57 attempts. For his career, 5 interceptions in 150 or so passes.

Was offered by Tarleton State and Incarnate Word before Texas Tech offered. After he committed to Texas Tech, was offered by Oregon, Penn State, Auburn, A&M, Tennessee and others...but signed with Texas Tech.

I hope this “package” for Carney includes throws downfield and that Fran wasn’t just talking about Luke’s junk.

I think the QB run has to be the dominant theme in the offense. Snap the ball, if there's a hole, have Rickie/Luke run to it. If they adjust the defense to plug the hole, hand the ball to Yasim and have him run to where they adjusted from. Usually the athletic QBs want to run first, although for some reason Rickie wants to be Peyton Manning. We don't run block well enough to just pound Yasim. Successful QB runs are demoralizing to a defense but open up for big plays in the passing game. Kyle and Steve moved the ball with precision passing. If we want to win going forward, we need to embrace chaos.

It's Nixon's call on the QB. He likes throwing the ball and taking deep shots. Coaches think they can fix kids. But they're basing a lot on who looks better in practice vs. game situations. And frankly, even if you fix Rickie by the end of the year, what good does that do? Not like we'd be keeping him.
I completely agree that coaches think they can develop any player. I feel that is big with Fran. He seems to want kids with measurables with the intent to develop them over time. I think it’s a great strategy but not sure it works with QBs or maybe just Ricky. It’s seems like Fran is in love with arm strength and athleticism. I would prefer a qb that gets the ball out quickly, reads defenses and can get through their progressions. That seems to fit Nixon’s style.

You don't think that the simplest explanation is that Carney just isn't ready, and that the coaches are holding him back when they've seen that Collins isn't any good out of blind loyalty to Collins? Ok. Agree to disagree.
I totally get what your saying, and agree with most of your sentiment but I think this line of thinking is ignoring a belief that some of us have (may or may not be true but we beleive it) which is that you can’t truly know what a player (or employee) will do when the game starts purley by watching them in practice.

So to say they know the Carney doesn't pop enough in practice, therefore would be underwhelming in a game, totally ingores the fact that some players are actually better in the chaotic, unscripted, high pressure game situations. I think of players who always just seem to make winning plays by reading the situation (never happens as scripted) and then make the best of it.

Dungey, Shrader, Hunt are examples of that kind of player compared to a Devito or Drew Allen are guys who look great when the conditions are more sterile but really lack the ablity to off script (almost every play ends up off script).

There is no way to know if Carney makes the most of each play or doesn't until we actually see him in a game since practice only gives you mayb 60-70% of that view, particullarly for QB who's situations are super sterilized in practice.

Look for Fran to say Rickie gives the team the best chance to win is ignorance. And Fran should know it. In order to win a game you have to outscore your opponent. The 3 games Rickie has started we have never been ahead for even a few seconds , so Fran's statement is completely wrong, and he should own it.

Well, that is in part because Fran refused to kick FGs.

Things can go sour very quickly with a fan base. I think starting all the QBs down to QB#6 in succession would encourage a fan base more than the gaslighting regarding what we are seeing out of Collins. That being said, Collins looked more confident and decisive in the 4th Quarter. But that is a comparison to Collins Q1-Q3. And the results did not really show much though, in part because of penalties and missed penalties (PI).

Crazy is the fact that anyone could see that Carney looked more comfortable than Collins... and he has yet to get 10 snaps in live game time. Collins seems like a guy that should be playing some other position... but because he can throw the ball 70 yards... he is being forced to play QB. Does he look like he enjoys playing the game any more than a cashier at Walmart? It looks like a job. Kind of like a 7'0 guy in basketball that really just wanted to be in the drama club or play the tuba...but because he is 7'0 he has to play basketball... all of the time with a look in his eyes envying us guys (that would rather have his height because we were centers trapped in the body more suitable to riding Secretariat).

At this point, Collins is not a 4 TD, 2 INT guy... where you live by the sword/die by the sword. He is a 1 TD (especially if we get a short field at least twice), 3 INT guy. You cannot consistently (if ever) win games when you are guaranteed to lose the turnover battle every game.

Coaches lose part of the fan base with every loss... and certainly every loss that shouldn't have happened. If Franklin beats UCLA or Northwestern, he still has a job. But they also lose it with stubbornness and--worse yet--lack of honesty. If Collins was the #1 QB out of spring, then we probably should have gotten 2 QBs in the portal... including a clear backup for Angeli. If Collins was not close to Angeli coming into the season, but Fran was saying that he was... do you think the players are learning appropriate life lessons regarding honesty?
Fans that are that weak minded, who cares?
