Luke Carney

Based on what I watched last night it is all mental with Collins. He made a couple good plays but then he would literally just stop focus and toss a head scratching play right after. I don’t think that’s coachable though, and I just don’t see him as figuring it out here. Maybe I’m wrong but I just don’t see it getting any better.
For many QBs doing that after they have started a few games, it is the stage that is their worst enemy. That means that if they drop down to 1AA (FCS) or maybe the MAC or CUSA, they might start to look good at that level.

Does Collins want to play next year? If so, he better drop down. If Fran Brown knows that Collins may never make it at this level, then he should start the younger guy now to see how he faces the pressure of the environment.

I assume everyone else also got the Nunes vibes when he came in? Small QB, quick feet, weak(ish) looking arm with a long delivery. And wears #11?

Luke should just look at Nunes' wife and say well at least this story can end well.
I got justifiably called out for saying he looked 5’ 8” 150 out there when in fact he’s evidently 6’2” 210 but on tv he looked much smaller and very Nunes like. At least if he doesn’t run backwards for 20 yards each game he might have a chance!

I honestly don't know much about Carney, but in the limited action I've seen him in, he kind of reminds me of your prototypical service academy QB. Very quick runner, and perhaps limited downfield throwing capacity.
watch this, think he can make every throw.

He did not look short or small on TV to me. I think he has room to bulk up a bit.

Agreed. Giving me Baker Mayfield vibes. Just needs to get a little more seasoning so he can gain that crazy swag/confidence. 😉

I feel like he has the prototypical skillset to be a great QB in Nixon’s system.

But I will say that he didn’t look all that confident on his incompletion that he threw a way much too early. Though he did catch that snap on a roll.

That happened right in front of me. The snap just completely ruined timing of that entire play. I was surprised he even attempted a pass. It was a cluster.

I still think he threw it away to early instead of looking for another option.

We could have taken a knee every O play in Qs 1-3 the last three games and we would have scored 3 points total.

Rickie has put up 10 more points in those 9 Qs or 3.33 per game. So we aren’t risking a whole lot playing Carney.

If we are down 3 scores by the 4th Q then you can always put Rickie in. That is his best Q anyway.

Do you really think Carney has shown something in practice that warrants starting him versus the current starter is so bad, anybody has to be better. That is the mindset people seem to have as opposed to our entire QB room is not very capable of winning a game and Ricky is the best of the bunch. I love the Orange..and this is a really bad place to be..middle of the season, you lost your starting QB, and the next men up...don't seem very capable...and you have a difficult schedule ahead. The Coach said what this season is about in the Presser after the Pitt game: We are a young team...and we have to develop! That is what the remainder of this season is about. I am not saying that...Coach Fran said it!
Your made a quote we are a young team and have to develope.
If he actually means that he sits Rickie and plays Luke the rest of the way.
If not then that statement is just B***.
Rickie has already proven he can't play the position, and it seems the team knows that also.
The team has no chance to win any games with Rickie, so try the youngsters, and give the rest of the team some hope.

I think the issue is Carney's small hands. Plus he smells of cabbage.

Well, we did take 3 points off the board against SMU. That would have been 12. Point stands though.

Our offense is G-Rob level and for the same reasons. The playcalling does not fit the QB on the field. End of story. Either change the plays or start cycling through QBs to see if something works.

Pretty sad that Williams is not ready after being backup all year last year and spring and 7 games into this year. Injury or otherwise.

In fairness to Luke for those calling out size. Pretty much all QBs are going to look small with our huge oline. I mean our oline averages about 6'6 335/340? Seriously though every year in college there are shorter QBs who kill it. Let the kid see the field and let's see what he can do over the next 5 games. Dillon's Gabriel was a stud for Oregon last year and the Cleveland browns have their starting quarterback listed at 5'10 205 pounds. It's not the size of the dawg in the fight but the size of fight in the dawg.

Not to mention all the short fields the O has gifted via turnovers. If we're at the 25 every time we punt that's plenty for Stonehouse to work with.

I just don't see how Rickie's "WAR" can be positive.

The kid threw for over 10,000 yards in high school. I watched an analysis do a break down of his game. Said he could make all the throws. Did not understand why lower rated.

Carney has plus arm strength thats not an issue. Go look at his ratings and film he can sling it. Can he throw it 80 yards like Collins not sure but teams don’t need that
He will throw it to our guys, and not the other team. And if their is nothing there he will tuck and run. He showed that on the bad snap. Rickie would have thrown an interception or got sacked for a loss. Throw it away which he did, but keep the ball, and don't lose yardage.

If he can lead us to a FG and 2 TOs in Qs 1-3 (Rickie's avgs), it is a push. That isn't a high bar. What exactly is the risk here? Even in the 4th Q Rickie is a 1 TD and 1 TO guy. We are averaging 10.3 ppg and 2.3 INTs with Rickie as the starter. But hey he has a nice arm.

I understand the frustration as a fan. I know Fran does not want to knock Ricky but this continued talk of arm strength when all the other intangibles are lacking is frustrating. Fran acknowledges the weakness but said wait until it clicks. Unfortunately those skills usually do not just click. After watching Ricky in person I’ve come to the realization that we will not win another game this season. Teams see he cannot move the ball with his arm. Pitt had everyone in the box to stop the run hoping he would throw. With him throwing they had a good chance for an interception.
I know the running game is not looking good but not many teams are running on a loaded box.
The O players must be frustrated knowing that they’re not moving the ball with Ricky. Fran talked about cook and gill being targeted 8 to 10 times but when the throws are bad it does not matter. Also it’s clear the staff is concerned with Ricky throwing deep opting for short passes so why is arm strength the factor that keeps him playing.
Again frustrating as a fan.

There has to be NIL donor guarantee here or something no? Fran has played things pretty sharply in his tenure here off the field, just seems like he is misreading the room on this one, and looking for a fight.
