Luke Carney

next play run. bad play. How are we screwing these plays up. Vallari has the LB. RG has his man. lT/LG in fine shape. Center free to the MLB. RG never touches 31 who comes free for no gain . another example of played vs the D and we turn5+ into zero

yeah, whoa, me likey. Has has the tools it appears, the skills needed and is McCord and Angeliesque in his style. Again give rickie the first half or at least first quarter, if no bueno, it's time for this kid. It appears he has all the tools:

The fear is if he doesn't get a crack at it, he gone, or one would think.

A couple of things.

I don’t get the reason Fran is using about age. He contradicts himself saying he can’t use Luke because he’s 1 year removed from HS, but we have to be patient with Rickie because he’s new to starting, even though he’s in his 3rd yr of eligibility. He shared a QB room with Jaydon Daniels and was Kyle McCord’s back up last season. He can’t have it both ways. Rickie can’t be inexperienced but older than Luke at the same time. Just like we saw with CDRW, I was 100% sold that it was going to be the same issue with Rickie. He’s just not good enough to play at this level.

That brings you to Luke. Sure he’s 1 year removed from HS and the competition wasn’t the highest level, but in this day and age if you recruit a QB from Texas, you either play him early, or he’s going to be playing closer to him by the time he’s “ready” , if he is ever ready. What I saw Saturday is someone who didn’t get any snaps or works with the 1’s during the bye week. After seeing Rickie for 2 games that inexcusable. I’ve said it a few times. At least Luke can threaten you with his legs. Maybe that can help open up the run game running RPO’s. What they did putting him in the game and expecting a spark is bizarre since they ran the most vanilla plays as you’re going to get and then taking him out on a passing down. What’s the worst he’s going to do? Throw an INT? That’s already covered with the more experienced QB. Last thing about Luke is I don’t see the throwing motion issues some have mentioned. At least his HS highlights you don’t see a wind up. I’ll have to go back and watch his throws this past game, but why isn’t that something they’re working on? I’m just going to assume basing on where he went to school, but most kids like him having private QB coaches. You would think that would be addressed, but again, based on the HS highlights I didn’t see anything to bad.

Final thing. If we knew our QB room was this bad, how do you go into the season with 1 Qb? You have to assume there’s going to be an injury at some point. I just can’t see how Rickie shows anything in practice other than the ability to make a good throw once in a great while.

I would have used the entire bye week trying to get Luke ready. The season is already gone. At least he gets experienced and we get a better idea of what we have.

3rd down play. Pretty simple 3 man route. Pick on db leaves Nixon under for simple 1st down pass. Not sure why Carney doesnt just rip it but he rolls out and still makes a nice throwView attachment 256256

Thought the same, I'm assuming maybe he's looking at Vallari deep.

I dont understand why we have 3 receivers within 2 yards of each other though. Pretty congested

Next play drop back. RG loses the DT on a spin move. Carney reacts well and rolls out to gain a couple.

last play. Ball rolls back to QB. Now we can argue if Gill needs to go the sticks, but Pitt is rolling outside release here. Gonna be a tough stick throw. Would really love the throw to go to slot on the left here, man here by Pitt and the safety is so deep

Just a quick correction on this one. Rickie wasn't here last season. 29 year old Michael Johnson Jr was our backup QB. Rickie transferred in before spring practice.

Perhaps, Fran was subliminally speaking for himself relative to patience, and "Days Like This" since he's literally learning on the job as a first time head coach in only his 2nd season as such.

Why should Fran play Carney the rest of the season?

Well, how about giving the team a real chance to win, and more importantly, make it possible for fans to watch the game without overdosing on heartburn medication.

Honestly, the Pitt game was beyond painful to watch.
I am a season ticket holder since 1995 so I have watched some pretty terrible games.
But these last 3 games are just awful to watch and beyond hopeless.
I cant make the Halloween game due to the day and other commitments, but now I am considering blowing off the BC game. I just cant watch another game like the Duke and Pitt games.

It is not that we lost - lord knows SU fans know what it is to lose.
It is the way we are losing - no plan, no hope just shockingly bad plays, constant turnovers and offensive penalties resulting from sheer frustration and lack of belief in Collins
.
I have seen no development at all from Rickie Collins and I cant keep watching this over and over like the SU version of groundhog day.

I don't care if Rickie can sling the ball 20-40-50 yards if most of the time you aren't sure who he is throwing the ball to - his teammates or the defense.

No way Rickie is our future - but maybe Carney is. We wont know until we see him out there for a meaningful period of time.

We all know that for whatever reason - nerves, memorization issues or maybe just plain stupid - Collins is never going to be able to run this offense as it stands effectively. And we will be waiting an awfully long time for the offense to finally click in Collins mind. If it ever does.

Fran can call this a developmental year but that implies some kind of development and improvement.
I have seen none the last three games.

The ball rolling back to the QB on that snap said it all. Not talked about enough is the OL which was already suspect is a mess again half way through the season like many other seasons in CNY.

Love the analysis and freeze frame pics!
I'll simplify

Collins at QB = hopelessness

Carney at QB = optimism
Yeah, even if you think Collins gives us a better chance to win still despite all the poor play, at this point every snap Collins takes is a failure to invest in our future success.

IF all they have Carney do is hand off, then what even is the point?

Let him get some RPO action, so he can actually play QB.

And take a deep shot now and again -
worst case, it’s a long “arm punt”.
On one of Carney's scrambles (to his R), Villari broke off a sideline route and went deep with his man pinned behind him. Perfect opportunity for a lob over coverage. I think in time Carney will see that and make the throw.

It is amazing that poor OL play has been a common theme for SU football over much of the past 20+ years. It was decent during the Marrone era but mediocre to poor outside of that.

I think the bigger problem is he IS sure of who he's throwing the ball to... and so are the opposing defenses.

Without checking down and getting through a modicum of progression reads to pick the most open target, defensive backs are simply following his eyes and jumping routes on his first and only read.

You don't get his level of pick stats randomly.

Love the analysis and freeze frames from upperdeck! Mostly because there is so much nuance to what happens on the field. Missed read, missed block here and there, and it kills the whole play. Ultimately all the coaches can do is scheme it up and hope the players see the openings when they do. The frustration with Rickie comes down to that point. He can't see the field in the way he needs to. I'm still very bullish on this team & coaching staff long-term, but once Angeli went down, it is clearly became a lost season.

St. Doug did not like the criticism after bring us from the trash heap of 10 wins over 4 years into the stratosphere of .500 football.

I hope St. Fran is not thinking that we are too much of a basketball school/fan base to not recognize bad football when we see it. In fact, as to the latter, we are probably EXPERTS given the bad times the past 55 years (i.e. all but 1987-1998 and a few years here and there). We all learned a lot about X's and O's watching teams out coach GERG. Look, anyone can see that Collins is athletic with a strong arm... but anyone can also see that he is really really not good at being a QB (at least under Nixon's system). It is unfair to him and to us to keep rolling out chicken noodle soup from a dented can and telling us that it is undercooked paella...
