last night I met an AD from a MAC school. I was introduced as a Cuse guy etc. she said I know who you want and who your going to get. She had great things to say about him as a person and coach. But she did caution me that he won't stay long. I told her well if he leaves that means we're winning. So be it!...come on down Mr Babers!!!

I hope she's right...

As long as the next HC doesn't give the impression that they want one foot already out of the door(Frost) I have no problem being a stepping stone.
Syracuse needs to win games pure and simple. If the Dino Dome gets rocking at 9-3 go ahead and leave. He isn't going to stay just one year and our 2017 schedule is insane so if he gets us to the promised land in 2018 we thank you Dino.

She didn't go into detail and I didn't press her on it...

Why would she say he won't stay long?
Because he's never stayed anywhere longer than a few years and she probably considers Syracuse to be a glorified mid-major.

Considering Babers will be 55 by the time next season begins, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that if he's successful and happy and Syracuse gives him what he wants and pays him well that he can stay here for the long haul.

But even if Babers leaves after three or four years, he'll have the system installed and we can promote the offensive coordinator (Sean Lewis?) and keep the machine going.

Probably basing it on his history.

Yep which isn't always accurate by any means. Cuse would be his first P5 coaching gig and he is in his 50s now. I guess it will be a good problem to have if we are worrying about him bolting in a few years

Good info. Re: leaving after a short stay, it is a benefit that he's 54 years old so that could be a deterrent at one of the bigger factories. Then again, it may not but it doesnt hurt.

I didn't realize he was the Pitt RB coach in 2003. He's been all over and hopefully that will help him recruit players and coaches.

I think it's all in where Babers thinks the programs cap is. If we start competing early and recruiting builds - if we can compete with FSU/Clemson - and if we sniff a conference championship? (I know a lot of wishful thinking)

I'd rather be in the ACC over any other conference if my goal was to get into the playoffs.

I honestly believe we are a sleeping giant. Most outside people have forgotten what the Done looks like packed and rocking.

It probably comes down to recruiting (can we get better players consistently to compete at a higher level) and $$$ (if a school comes calling and is offering 4M instead of 2M - can we find the $$ to retain?)

All of this way way too soon to think about realistically obviously. But man. Could be exciting times.

He didn't become a HC until he was 50/51 can't blame the guy for trying to move up the food chain quickly. If he has success here he might just stay.

Like coach Mac.

Coyle already passed on a guy who wanted out after 2-3 years. Doubt he hires this guy unless he is convinced he will be here for at least 5 years. That would put him at 60 and deter a football factory (hopefully).

the path for guys at 60 does tend to slow down and if he doe well here he will be close to top of the ACC how much higher does he want to get ? if his offense is getting 500+ here he may well win the ACC title

Not sure - the first time he punts Alsacs and Millhouse are going to run him out of town. (kidding fellas)

Save...none of his jobs previously were not paying $2M+

I think year 3 will be critical...if we are winning 8-9 games in the regular season the truly Big Boys will be coming...Cuse at that time hopefully will have a fresh sold out Dome and flush with cash...will they renew his contract midway through the 3rd season on the hope getting to 8-9 wins????

Should he be the guy, retaining Babers will be up to the university to create a situation that he doesn't want to leave. They will have to weigh the financial benefit of the success he has generated against the cost of what it takes to keep him. However, the level of success he creates will also be tell tale. Look at the season Marrone cobbled together to get a lift to the NFL -- yes it was great for us given our recent history but in the total landscape of CFB it wasn't all that memorable. If we are able to seriously compete for a conference championship, maybe that creates enough satisfaction for him to want to just enjoy the ride at SU. I don't think his age alone will keep him at SU, however. I think his history has demonstrated serious ambition, and the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. The question is can success at SU, with increased university commitment, provide enough of a sense of fulfillment? If football games start to resemble basketball games, as they have in the past, I say yes.

Orange colored glasses on.

He is 54 going to be 55
His offense will be in an indoor climate controlled environment.
His road games (6 of them) will for the most part be in the south.
If he has 3 good years here, he's pushing 60, other schools may pass.

I think this sets up beautifully, and hopefully is the reason he chose Syracuse. LGO!

This is a guy who always wanted to be a HC. 4 years ago he took a 50% pay cut to take the Eastern Illinois job. When he got the BG job he was not much above where he was at Baylor. He will have what he has always wanted and I think he will retire from Syracuse.

Dino Babers literally checks off everything Syracuse needs for the next HC.
Offensive minded
HC experience
Develops QBs

I actually like the age. 54 isn't too old. He has another decade in him of coaching.

Rich people problems.

I'm more worried [not really] about him getting here, I have zero capacity to worry about when he might leave. Just get the guy here and let's see what he can do.
Exactly the prospect of us winning 8-9 games is so foreign people worrying about a coach we haven't hired yet getting us to that point is ridiculous. What if he bombs in the acc. We don't know

I'm just skeptical of how many Big Boys be coming after a guy in his late 50's.
