Mack Brown sticking around for another season. Or not.

Not dazzling but he was getting bowl games and top-30 recruiting classes every year. He definitely turned the team around after a couple of bad years of Larry Fedora.
Good for Syracuse, I guess. Bad for old guys.

I wonder how much the schedule matters in the record. the unbalanced ACC schedule and now the all over the place scheduling.

two good ACC years and under .500 the other 4.

Keep in mind before expansion he was in the Coastal with a talent advantage over everyone that isn't Miami. They should have better records over those years honestly

UNC taking the first step to positioning themselves for the next reconfiguration. They need to have their football better when they join the SEC/BIG conglomerate. UVA should be doing the same thing as their guy is not the answer either.

Ha, I hope Tony Elliott sticks around forever.

They discussed this on ACCN last night.

Mack apparently said once he retires, the next big event in his life is his death. He doesn’t want that so he wants to keep working as long as he can.

If he retires, he leaves the UNC program in far better shape than it was when he returned.

Seems like a good guy. I wish him well whatever ends up happening…..
First, that's an awful personal outlook for anyone to have. My goodness, find other things to enjoy in your life, Mack.

Second, looking at the results of his 6 years at the helm, it seems like he basically continued the tradition of being slightly better than mediocre that Larry Fedora and Butch Davis established before him. Lots of 5 loss seasons.

I'm perpetually perplexed as to why UNC (and UVA) are mediocre at football. Great schools, great areas to live, great recruits nearby, great facilities... and mediocre results. They're a constant drag on the potential of the ACC.

Not too worried about post Mack UNC. They might be better coached but won't have the talent he had. Since Mack Brown 1.0...

ACC Records
Torbush 10-14 0.0 6+ W seasons
Bunting 18-30 0.0 6+ Ws
Davis 15-17 0.0 6+ Ws
Weathers 3-5 0.0 6+ Ws
Fedora 28-28 one 6+ Ws
Brown 2.0 27-22 two 6+ Ws

So over the last 27 years they have had a grand total of 3 ACC seasons with 6 or more Ws. And that is all the while not having to play Clemson or FSU every year from 2005 and on. Mack is the only HC over .500 in the ACC. Also during that 27 year span they have finished Top 25 a grand total of TWO times. That is one less than SU (assuming we don't this season).

they are basketball schools and i think it impacts recruiting to some extent. Their football will be perpetually second banana. I think Syracuse historically is better than either program and was always considered in my small brain (until the recent 20 year swoon).

They don't have that one run in their history that is historically relevant like the Clemsons, FSUs, Miamis, VATech, and yes even Syracuse.

If they land the big dog coach who turns it around it seems like they are ready to leave too for another gig that is better. Maintaining a long term coach at these types of programs helps immensely. Think Beamer or Nehlen.

My two cents (probably wrong)

Being serious about coaching seems to be the most obvious answer.

SEC schools were all "football schools" once upon a time, save for Kentucky. Then they got serious, hired and retained great coaches, and now it's arguably the best hoops conference in the country.

UNC keeps trying on that front with Brown and Davis before him, but haven't struck gold yet.

i was work shopping this SEC hoops situation and realized i'll ignore it and hope no one mentions it.

It's true and may be long lasting now with the advent of professional pay to play.

I still think football is tough to become good (and relevant more important) overnight. In hoops it does seem to happen quicker with coaching (Calipari/Umass) and money/shadiness (UNLV)

Look how well Texas did after Mack. They went through 4 or 5 coaches after Mr Brown

I couple years ago I was looking at historical recruiting ranking in football over the last 25 years - UNC has generally recruited at a level they should be consistently a top 25 program. They have substantially underperformed what recruiting would indicate - that means the program is in a great spot for a good coach to launch them into the top 10.

It’s bizarre they haven’t been able to find that guy.

Wonder if they have any decent recruits to poach.
We had offered two of their (only ten) commits:

DE Austin Alexander, 6-3, 243, from Union, KY. But he has at least two dozen offers, including from SEC schools.

S Julien Horton, 6-0, 175, from Bel Air, MD.
