Maliq Brown starting at Duke

He was playing less and less as the season progressed. Since the beginning of the year, their last 3 games he’s played only 28 minutes total. Maluach 7’2” center has really improved taking most of the minutes now and Patrick Ngongba, another 6’11” center has been out injured this season after foot surgery is predicted to be able to play more soon. Love Maliq but he’s regressed offensively from his SU days. Watching him there, he still runs the court very well but on fast breaks he doesn’t even look to score just passing it out, I don’t know if he’s coached not to shoot nor be a part of the offense other than setting screens and passing off but he’s very reluctant to ever shoot even when wide open. His stellar defense is his contribution to Duke’s team. Maluach, Ngongba and Mason Gillis, a 6’6” grad transfer from Purdue, are expected to get his minutes. Hoping he recovers but do wonder about his future minutes there. He was helping Duke when he played defensively and as a consummate team player, he would have helped if he had stayed here too and I think his offense would have continued to improve.
In the future, looking back on his season at Duke, Brown can say "At least I got to play the out of conference schedule before losing all my playing time."

I almost never hold a grudge against a guy for transferring, but for some reason this one really made me angry.

Personally I was disappointed with his flipped decision to leave but if he thought he could be coming off the bench with the addition of Eddie and Donnie, I guess he figured coming off the bench at Duke was better and probably a more fiscally sound decision than staying. What also bothered me is that MaliQ had his best game against Duke last year in his entire time here - 26 points, 7 rebounds and then he transferred to them, a conference foe. At Duke whether he played much or not this season, weakened a conference opponent and got a player who played very well against them - double blow by Duke. Maliq had 17 games last year where he scored in double digits for us while averaging over 7 rebounds a game, overall averaging 9.5 points a game. He did, despite many comments on this board, have an offensive game too, that he really hasn’t shown at all at Duke. I do think he could have progressed offensively more at SU like he did over his 2 years here than at Duke. His choice though and hoping he recovers from his injury.

And Jyare's recent 33 minutes per game and starting would have been all Maliq. Granted, when Donnie comes back that will change, but it would have been impossible in my mind to keep Maliq off the court very long regardless of whether he started or not. Too bad but oh well. This just in line with other recent cuse sports disappointments.

Would have been interesting to see what Red did once the wheels fell off this season if he had Maliq coming off the bench while starting Donnie Bell and Lampkin.

7 pages on a guy a lot of people weren't worried about losing. Y'all are wild.

BTW, his current BPM is more than 2x our current best BPM out of our full roster. And his DBPM is more than 4x.

Now let's go back to our 8-8 team that hasn't beaten anyone with a NET better than 130 with the guys that Red constructed his roster with.

It was the perfect situation for what he wanted. He could get paid, and he could be a guy off the bench.

Brown did not want to stay. His choice. He was not forced out. Next.

A lot of people weren't worried about losing?? Not what I remember. In fact, I went back to the old "Brown to Duke" thread, and here are a few comments just on the first page...

- First one (transfer) that really sucks.
- Kill me
- I'm done. Just can't do it anymore
- Huge loss. Ugh
- Danggggg
- Dammit
- This blows
- We can't compete in the basketball work anymore. What a shame

interesting comments from many folks in this one.

The one that stings is saying he didn't receive offers out of high school from "upper echelon" schools. I don't know if the author is paraphrasing from him or his parents or adding his own perspective but it is blatantly saying we are not upper echelon. It hurts mightily but it is true. This is a good article. The student paper does a good job of scooping Syracuse.com sometimes and this is an example. The DO got a lot of people to talk for this article, it's obvious the author did a lot of digging.

Pretty tame article, no new information really. No doubt we are better team with him, but I wonder if he stayed how the roster construction changes. My assumption would be we would not have needed Jyare, so we could have used that money to get a better PG potentially.

Maliq didn’t want to play the 5. Donnie can’t play the 5. You probably couldn’t play them both with Lampkin - not enough shooting, dribbling, spacing. Maliq knew his minutes would go down significantly if he hes not playing the 5 and Donnie is here. Might as well get a national championship I get it lol.

I'm thinking that if we could convince Maliq to play the 5, we wouldn't have needed Eddie. We would still have taken Jyare as a back-up 4 to Donnie.

If Maliq stayed, we find a way to play him 30 mins. He is too damn valuable to not play extended minutes. And he often is the small man 5 at Duke! Clearly avoiding playing the 5 no matter what was not his main concern. We would play him 30 even if it meant less minutes for Donnie. Even this year we often had Donnie on the bench towards the end of games since his defense is a liability. We would sometimes have Jyare out there instead of him down the stretch. You think we would keep Donnie out there with Maliq on the bench in crunch time this season? No way in hell. It would be either Maliq and Lampkin or Donnie with Maliq taking Lampkins spot at the 5 down the stretch.

Maliq Brown is a great player and was upset that he left. But reading this article I just think he made a cowardly move. I think he would’ve been expected to be a leader here this season and going to be a bench player on an elite Duke team kind of shows that he didn’t want to be a leader yet here or ever. Which is his prerogative because of his abilities he is someone that can go and get playing time anywhere, but just disappointing because he has a unique talent and IQ for the game that could get to another level developing those leadership qualities.

Completely agree. We would have found a way to get him his minutes. I just don't buy that he left because he thought he'd get less minutes. I believe he left almost completely because of an opportunity to play for one of the best programs in the country and likely getting a bigger paycheck. I don't fault him for that.

For many players, getting more cash and playing for a national contender is more important than logging more minutes on the court while playing for a team that might not even make the ncaa tournament.

Not all leaders are called to lead all the time. Picking your moments is fine. Coward is a word that should be reserved for more dire circumstances than going to another basketball team

Maliq made the right move to leave, better to be playing for something in March than put up better stats on a worse team.

I think the "right" thing for Maliq was whatever was best aligned to his future goals. If he prioritizes playing for a title (at the expense of less minutes), having life long memories of that experience, and collecting a larger check, Duke was a great choice. However, if it was about getting the most minutes he could on the court and to continue to develop as a player, staying at Cuse would have probably been the better choice.

More and more I understand why the dome is filled with Duke and UNC jerseys when we play them. People would rather be on the winning side than stay a devoted fan to a team going through rough times. I will be there in Cuse gear from head to toe, chirping everyone in Duke gear, whether they are in the stands or on the court.

He absolutely did the right thing for himself IMO. He is not an NBA player, so make more money while you can and get the best college basketball experience you can. 10 years ago this argument could not be had as we were Duke caliber.

Agreed.

The article summarized what I've heard about Brown's departure -- there was lots of team dysfunction, his coach [and the AC who recruited him] had both left, 4 out of 6 members of his incoming recruiting class were leaving. Syracuse wasn't close to sniffing the NCAA tournament his first two years, and he wanted to taste that success. All while getting paid substantially more.

Wish he'd stayed, but understand why he left. However, it does suck that he went to an in-conference foe, ESPECIALLY Duke.

But Maliq was a terrific player to us, who's value often went beyond just stats alone. I think that's why it is easy for some posters to rationalize away the impact of his departure.
