Maliq Brown starting at Duke

Some of you chirp constantly about 'kids these days' and how all they want is glory and money, and they don't care about putting the team ahead of themselves.

But when a guy takes a lesser role at a power because it was his dream school and he gets to pursue a title, now he's cowardly?

Some of you are friggin' insane.
From what I read in the article, it seemed like he made a cowardly move. I guarantee all of us have made a cowardly move whether big or small in our lives multiple times and it may have even been the right move. But it’s still a cowardly move based on the article. Now one thing missing from this article is quotes from Maliq himself, so we don’t know if this is how he actually felt and quite frankly he doesn’t have to share how he felt if he doesn’t want too. His mom said he loved it here and the decision was a result of changing dynamics (his class portaling out) and feeling like things were starting all over. We were going through changes and Autry appeared to be disappointed by his decision and it seemed like he was going to have a big role on and off the court as an upperclassman role model. He chose differently, and it seems like he is happy, which is the most important thing when it all comes down to it. I was just pointing out my reaction to the article in that my first thought was that it was a cowardly move that he made.

How is going to Duke not chasing glory and money??? He transferred to freaking Duke! He got a bag! He might get a natty too! Staying with the team who recruited him would be the non-glory and money route! How on earth would staying on this Cuse team be a sign of a kid chasing glory and money??????

When KD went to Golden State he accepted a lesser role and got to pursue a title! You must of thought that was a saintly move too!
What bag? Someone tell me specifically how much NIL money he's getting from Duke.

He'd certainly get a lot more PERSONAL glory playing 35+ minutes a game at SU and being the guy who headlines our promotional material. That's what the kids all want, right? Personal attention over team success?

Criticizing Brown is cuckoo-bananas. He left because almost everyone else left, and he had a chance to go play for the premiere program in the country and pursue a championship. What a worm, right?!

With all due respect, I find that cowardly is a terrible word to use. Like hellaciously terrible. It suggests that Brown has a deeply flawed character, and I find that to be incredibly unfair.

You think he was AFRAID to stay at SU and get the same big minutes and workload that he did last season? He literally did what you say he was cowardly avoiding.

He made a choice, and to me it was a logical one.

How do you think Lampkin came to SU? Carlos? Jyare? Lucas Taylor? JJ?

Duke is the biggest powerhouse in the freaking sport. We are a team struggling to stay afloat. There is no scenario where he would be getting more personal glory here next year! I don't think he is a bad person, and certainly do not think he is a bad basketball player, but I am a freaking Syracuse fan and Duke has been our most hated conference rival along with UNC! I will never be rational on this. If you transfer from Cuse to Duke you better be getting chirped by every Cuse fan in the world!! This would be like going to GTown back in the day! Every person who has ever put on a duke jersey can suck it! And that includes Maliq!!

We are are to Duke and UNC what BC is to us. There is no rivalry there.
I do not give a crap!! Those punk asz bandwagon fans coming into the dome make me sick every time. Pretty much the happiest I have been as a Cuse fan since like 2013 was chirping those powder blue idiot UNC bandwagon fans when they were leaving the dome after we beat them last year. Our goal is to get back to how it felt in 2014 when we were joining the conference and competing with those teams for the top. Screw those teams, screw those fans, and screw anyone who plays for them.

Saying someone is a coward and saying someone did something cowardly are two different things. Regarding the choice he made, yeah it is a logical one. I honestly think he brings invaluable skills to a team that he could be successful no matter where he went. But atleast according to his mom despite Autry wanting to keep him and he was loving it here, the decision to even enter the portal was due to the dynamic changing with his teammates entering the portal. Maybe he loved Syracuse, but the article reads as it was more conditional than unconditional because his situation of leaving was different given the staff didn’t want him to go.

no its not

if we cant criticize and hate on players that bail on the program and transfer to frickin duke then what is the point of even being a fan??

duck fuke

your perspective makes sense if your family goes to the same church as brown's or if you are merely a fan of ncabb in general...not if youre a syracuse supporter

if brown was here this year ...it would have gone totally differently imo

i didnt want him as a center and preferred freeman at PF but didnt realize that freemans defense was almost nonexistant

a frontline of freeman, brown and lampkin wouldve been nice, imo...especially considering how bell turtled up into his shell this year inexplicably

The one that stings is saying he didn't receive offers out of high school from "upper echelon" schools. I don't know if the author is paraphrasing from him or his parents or adding his own perspective but it is blatantly saying we are not upper echelon. It hurts mightily but it is true. This is a good article. The student paper does a good job of scooping Syracuse.com sometimes and this is an example. The DO got a lot of people to talk for this article, it's obvious the author did a lot of digging.
Maybe he meant he didn’t get offers from any other upper echelon schools besides Syracuse. Lol, that’s what I will choose to believe.

So you don't know how much NIL money he's getting? You can just admit that. It's fine, I don't know either.

Also, there is no SU-Duke rivalry at all. They're a conference opponent, the same as Wake Forest and SMU. It's not in any way like someone transfering to G'town in the 80s.

I think you're making a distinction without a difference and trying to mitigate the harshness of your characterization.

Let me ask, what do you call someone who did something cowardly?

Well put.
It is so preposterous to think that Duke fans think anything special about SU.

That Orange fans seriously believe Duke is a rival in the G-town sense is also ridiculous.
We really may want to beat them...but so does every other team they play.

Reminder that these takes are based on the article I read in this thread. Explain to me how this isn’t a cowardly move. There is courage in what Maliq Brown did going to a new place in an extremely competitive environment. But I read this article and see that he loved it here and the staff wanted him back. His teammates leaving and the changed dynamic leads to him entering the portal not even sticking by for this season. He still has another year of eligibility. Again I personally could make the same exact decision he did even given these details. But reading the article, I come away thinking that he didn’t want to continue working through the changing dynamic even though he loved it here and the staff wanted him to stay.

it's only a rivalry if you beat them, our record since joining the ACC is abysmal against Duke

When we get good again, the hostility towards the top teams will return from all of you and you will act like it never left. Right now it is crazy dark times with all these fans having their tail between their legs. Even 4-5 years ago there would be nothing but hatred for Duke. Now because we suck I guess we just have to bow down to talented teams.

I think the last time we were ranked in the regular season Maliq was 10 so I can see why he felt he didn’t get offers from top echelon schools.

So I’m not sure what you are looking for, who’s bowing down? you want me to call Brown a loser or a coward because he doesn’t play for my alma mater as we currently have like 10 guys who didn’t start at Syracuse to begin with?

It’s unhinged. People transferring is part of the current system. Is what it is.

He liked it at SU until circumstances changed dramatically. So he found a better place for himself.

What courage has to do with any of that is totally beyond me.

I’m done, man
