Man we suck at the portal

You consistently defended Pickie Collins to no end, and now you denigrate Gill?!?
Not Funny Comedy GIF by Paramount+
No WR would have looked good with the sorry state of QBing after Angeli. I think Gill transferred because he has no trust in this staff and afraid of being in the same predicament next year if Angeli goes down again. You are always one play away from losing your starting QB especially if the Oline is suspect like SYR.

Is that still the theme?
I would preface this by stating we struck the target far more than we struck out. With definitive limitations. Listen to Mike Mcallister talk about Syracuse fans who will complain no matter what literally in every situation and I have heard so many times this is very common for all college fan bases. Maybe so, however it seems to be much more prevalent here. Fan base has definitely been beat up for sure. Honestly just look at our record but there is a reason why certain things turn around and optimism is definitely going to fuel that fan base and most importantly the team. Maybe Indiana will be the Syracuse football team from 1987 and ride the coattails until the early 2000s with literally decimated support from the university. Except they have massive support already. I honestly think they have already shown what they will support. I think we need to have a little faith here and not change our tune so quickly. In 1987 was definitely before my time However I certainly love the history of my school.

Glad they got 11 guys. Seems like another 2 or 3 may be coming.
Honestly not too blown away by who they got. RB from LSU looks good on paper. FCS guys who were elite makes some sense, but it's a big step up in competition.
You’ll see

100%

And just one thing to say about FCS guys moving up - they probably don't have the same measurables as we are used to getting the last couple classes.

I don't think we can count on 100% of these guys being good enough. If we end up with, say 14 players (we have 11 right now), I would guess that at least 7 or 8 are good enough to make the 2 deep.

So that's pretty decent. Some of the freshman will contribute, probably more at WR and in the Secondary, maybe a RB, but they have to be able to pass block, which is always a challenge with freshmen.

I hope we hit a couple home runs with these last spots.

I would still like another DL, an OT good enough to start, and a WR good enough to be a threat on the outside, with good size who you can throw to on fades in the red zone. Maybe one more RB, if I'm being greedy. We lost several.

This is one of the more baffling things I've read on this board.

What was Gill's 1 trick, being a really good overall WR?

As Buddy Ryan once said of Chris Carter when he was released from the Eagles..."All he ever does is catch touchdowns.".

So we ignore that he couldn't beat press coverage. Didn't win 50/50 balls, and was a bad blocker. He was best when he was running through zones or in soft man cushions.. Having bad QB play didn't help him at all.

Outside of dominating Colgate he caught 26 passes for 350 yds. Huge catch vs Clemson. After Angelli went down he had one catch over 30 yds as our #1 outside threat and 2 catches total over 20 yds. What part of overall good WR did he excel at?
J.J McCarthy can't get Justin Jefferson the ball, did that make Justin Jefferson and overall bad WR?

I really don't get too excited...most of these guys will be no better than those that left. Hopefully 2-3 guys emerge as all conference type guys.
I agree. A lot of potential serviceable guys that can plug holes, but i don’t see any of the high impact guys we got in 2024. For example i mentioned in another thread right now Syracuse is 53rd in team ranking for portal transfers and 11th in ACC.

Outside of a couple outlier years when everyone was happy, what has there been to really be excited about and not complain over the last 2 decades. Same with hoops the last decade. Syracuse could sign Joe Blow from Fulton and it would be a huge pick up. He denied Syracuse basketball was in free fall when it was happening before our eyes. There are glass half empty guys, half full guys, glass overflowing guys like McCallister and some here, and then some who just call it like they see it.

Our goose is likely cooked. Fran may have been a great recruiter pre NIL but when you add in the insane money it now takes to recruit and compete into the equation (which we cannot match) things look bleak. If people with deep pockets want to perpetually throw large sums of their own money away chasing a championship, good for them…college sports now sucks.

Where did we rank on portal in Fran’s first haul? I recall Diggs and McCord but who else?

I think I read that the price of top QBs has gone from about $1.5M to $3-4M this year. That's one guy, and that's more than most assistants are making.

We got a few Georgia guys and a couple other SEC guys, like that DT from Alabama

We had the best high school class in 30 years. The transfer portal isn't splashy, but we filled depth needs.

Indiana was 8th in transfer portal rankings last year. It appears the scouting services favor original recruiting rankings more than production and it appears we are prioritizing the latter this year.

+ last year’s class was good and in theory players are supposed to get better over their careers.

Samuels, Deslauriers are already good. Have heard the staff really loves some of the younger linemen on both sides of the ball, but traditionally tough to do much in the trenches as a true frosh. I expect some of those guys to be much bigger contributors this season.

Also besides Gill and a bit regarding Willis we didn't lose a lot of talent by transfer

I’m talking ones that panned out. Think it’s just McCord, Meeks, and Diggs.
