Manhattan Gameday...

Totally agree... Going to be interesting to see how the roster cap plays into all of this. The one announcer last night stated that Wildhack agreed to opt into the roster caps... I haven't really dove into that yet, but I think the cap for lacrosse would be 48 players. That's going to be a big hit for teams that typically carry 60 players. I bet we will see a lot more redshirting and 'true' practice squads... where a team will have 60 players but will only dress/list 48 players on a posted roster. Again, not sure of the details, but I could imagine teams getting creative with the caps.
The schools that are in P5 conferences (includes the former Pac12 schools) are defendants along with the NCAA in the House case. So by definition by agreeing to the proposed settlement of that case they are agreeing to all of its terms. One of them, as proposed, is the new roster limits. I believe 48 for men's lacrosse & 38 for women's lacrosse. And no scholarship limit, up to the roster limit. The only things for schools to determine is 1) how many scholarships to give, up to the roster limit, and 2) whether to compensate athletes, which for the next academic year is capped at a total of $20.5 million. Syracuse has no choice but to agree to the settlement, including the roster limits. If the judge approves the settlement. What I believe Wildhack said is that Syracuse will provide the full $20.5 million in compensation. But he did not say how it would be allocated among the various sports. He has no choice on the roster limits. Schools not in P5 conferences can choose to abide by the rules of the settlement or not. I've read, maybe on IL, that in lacrosse, it is expected that only the ACC & B1G teams will use the terms of the settlement. It isn't expected that other schools, not in the P5 conferences, will opt in. So far I am not aware that any other school has said they will opt in. There is a thread on the House case settlement I believe on the Football Forum. I don't believe Syracuse has announced how many scholarships they will give. In football the old scholarship limit was 85. Under the House case settlement the roster limit is 105.

Regarding the freshman impact ratings on Inside Lacrosse...I noticed a common theme - most of the teams they're on...they stink. They're not very good (imagine Norm McDonald's delivery reading it).

I'm sure it's awesome to make the list when you're getting playing time on Bellarmine, UMass, St. Joes, Siena, Dartmouth, and St. Bonaventure...

I noticed yesterday that Manhattan was “conceding” the faceoffs. They would spot the long stick midfielder close to their defensive zone, and as soon as the whistle blew, that long stick would immediately run to the defensive area.
Can anyone explain this strategy to me please? My apologies if this is a common occurrence, but I don’t recall ever seeing this before.

They know they're not going to win faceoffs, so they set up the defense to prevent a fast break.

We used a similar scheme against Bryant in 2013.

They had a dominant face off guy (Kevin Massa) and we had no answers for him. He won 22-23 on the day. They were up two goals on us in the first 40 seconds.

Eventually we sent an LSM out to battle Massa, just to keep them from quick scores.

By forcing Bryant into long possessions, they turned the ball over 18 times, and we won 12-7.

The Chris Daddio / Cal Paduda Era.

you are losing faceoffs so cleanly and badly that in order to prevent fast breaks out of them, you send a wing to make sure that doesn't happen.

unfortunately, have had to employ it.

Ya you pretty much nailed it with this response. That was a rough game to watch to say the least. Of course the following year draws were much closer (not even but closer) and SU lost.

Thank you for this detailed response. It all makes sense now with not wanting fast breaks.

Grant this may be little late but really wanted to mention it as feel been asking for this to happen since last year.

But the one goal spallina scored coming from behind cage going up right side (looking at goal) he did his normal go up to where he likes to do that btb shot. But this time believe he hesitated for half second then continued topside n had way more net to shoot at n he scored. Was manhattan defender of course maby even was short stick at time can’t remember. But been saying it for while if he would do his signature dodge move to go for btb. But just threw rocker dodge or even fake btb n continue topside he prob get step to get hands free plus have more of net to shoot at to which creates more goals hopefully.

Had to mention it as he finally seemed to continue top side after a slight hesitate stop n go. Hope he tries this more as said every defender knows if he goes up that side he’s going for his signature move. If he baits them on that move (fake , rocker , hesitated move) he could get step topside. Feel a lot of our players don’t push for topside n middle of field as hard or as much as they should. Keep trying these poor angles. Anyway just wanted to say was nice to finally see him continue topside/middle for that goal!

For what it's worth, the camera showed Deere and Anderson laughing and joking around after a goal in the fourth quarter. Didn't look like two teammates at odds with each other. Hopefully this is just limited to one parent.

Anderson looked good last night in mop up duty, and I'm rooting for him to get a starting spot next year. This roster right now just doesn't have a lot of openings. I with he would get some looks on the second midfield line, but guys on that unit aren't playing poorly enough to be benched (in my mind at least). Cordes is coming off a four point outing against Hopkins. Hottle has had some nice performances this year and also isn't a liability on the defensive end. And while the stats haven't been piling up for McCarthy, he's a mini-Sam English out there, playing a ton of defense, is on the face-off wings, and also doesn't make mistakes. He would be a heat map king if they tracked player movement during a game.

Last point, I understand fully advocating for your kid and wanting what is best for them, but if you are making such a fuss that fans in the stadium are noticing your displeasure, it really is time to reevaluate things. Again, I am only rooting for the players in question, hopefully cooler heads prevail here.
I'm a little late to this conversation but one point relating to "doesn't make mistakes" that I want to amplify in the discussion of Anderson's upside and how one values Deere's contributions is TRUST. The team runs a 6-man offense with each player relying on the 5 others to do their part. Moving without the ball, clearing space, sealing a defender, making the right pass (even though its two passes before the assist) are all essential at this level and in this offense.

It is sometimes hard for a top recruit, who was an initiator in high school, who was meaningfully better than his peers at that level, who could continually create his own offense, to play within the offense and make the little plays, that make an offense cook. Maybe Anderson has not yet earned the trust of his teammates and coaches ... despite his immense talent.

I agree with most of this. I would say that Anderson comes from Brunswick, which is as close to a college program as you can get in high school. He played with other Five Star recruits and I think his team was number one in the country for a while. I guess I would have expected him to come in a little more college ready.

But yes, he is still a freshman, and this Orange offense is incredibly timing based. If you aren't in the exact right spot at the right time, or bobble the ball for a half second, it throws everything off. That's kind of why I didn't panic when Deere put up goose eggs against Hopkins. He was still contributing with groundballs and the offense was still flowing. Even when he missed a shot he was still putting pressure on the defense, and his spacing was good. Overall it's hard since we don't see or hear much from practice, so all we have to go is a few cameo appearances.

I have noticed that all of Anderson's goals have come from the attack position. I would like to see him get some runs with the second line, as that group has been struggling recently, but perhaps the coaches just want him to focus on playing attack in preparation for next year?

Anderson / Deere are not an either or thing.

If freshman are unhappy with their PT on a top 10 squad there's the door.
Agreed. They have to wait while we win with veterans - and we have to win, man just win baby!
