Manny Diaz Out G-Rob in As Texas DC

Great guy, better coach than given credit for.

Not the opinion of two former players I talked to at the Penn State tailgate.

I could care less about Robinson. He was a disaster here.

But I'm glad Texas hired him. Texas is in the same category as Notre Dame, VT, Alabama, Florida, USC, Ohio State. Football programs that I love to hate. (Rutgers isn't worth the bother). I hope he and Texas have a miserable year.

And to reiterate...my screen name has no connection to the lone star state...my St Bernard (pictured) was named after Bevo Francis. Bevo spent a few years at SU..hence my screen name.

It hurts when board members refer to the Big 12 as the bevo...I don't like my dog being associated with those prima donnas.

As a person or coach? According to some players and parents I've spoken too over the years, they'd agree with me. Just like some players couldn't stand Marrone.

Nice enough guy, but clueless...according to them.

There are people in this world (Syracuse fans, no less) who still defend Greg Robinson as a good coach? GOOD. LORD.

I could give a rat's ass whether or not he's a good guy or not or if some on this board shook his hand once. He was one of the most inept head coaches in college football history.

I'm not sure anyone said he was a good head coach. He certainly wasn't at SU.

He certainly hasn't been within the last decade. Its fair for people to question the hire and attribute it to the incestuous good ole boys club of the coaching fraternity. The man should be nowhere near the reins of a defense at a school like Texas (or any other BCS level school for that matter).

And rode GRob's under the radar QB like he was Secretariat then left when he did.

I am partially kidding.

Rode Ryan Nassib? He made Ryan Nassib.

He's a horrible coordinator, period. You want to dig up that article about his stay in Kansas City? Everything they describe is the horror show he staged here.

ha ha ha BYU hung 40 on them - the mighty 15th ranked longhorns.

I'm still amazed this was actually a discussion. there is a reason he was an assistant high school coach last season. he can't coach, and the only person who took him is a guy out the door himself.

People much smarter than us would disagree since he keeps getting hired. How many coaches do you think there are that have never been let go in the pro's or even college? Not many.

I'm amazed he can have the resume he has and where he has coached but people here know better. Btw, he wasn't working last year so he volunteered to help coach the local high school team whose head coach happened to be an old friend and teammate in college. The horror.

You have the perfect argument. If a kid did nothing, it's because he was a Robinson recruit. If a kid does well, it had nothing to do with Robinson recruiting the kid, it was Marrone making him a player.

my brother was a walk on for his first season and echoed the exact same thing

And other players and parents would disagree. Means nothing. You can find multiple people on any side of an argument.

He has pictures of Mack and Bevo

How did Marrone win 8 in year 2? We weren't competitive? Marrone should also send a thank you to Grob for Nassib, Pugh, Lemon, Sales and a little of Chibane. We see now what they were.

Easy--he was exponentially a more effective coach than GRob, and he came close to maximizing what contributions he was able to get out of the players he had, even with subpar depth. I won't go so far as GO as to saint the man, or suggest that marrone didn't have a learning curve that was at times frustrating. But some people conveniently seem to forget that in year 2, we were totally pedestrian on offense and had limited depth. And yet, somehow that staff found a way to claw and scratch their way to wins, scoring a trio of late season road victories that pushed us over the top, culminating in an improbable bowl win. And that Rutgers win to get us to bowl eligibility was a war of attrition between them and us--a totally depleted team.

There's an adage I'm about to poorly paraphrase about good coaches taking their'uns and beating your'uns, then being able to take your'uns and beat their'uns. Well, Marrone took over GRob's team, ran a bunch of players off who weren't willing to buy into what it would take to reverse the culture of losing that permeated the program, and made them instantly tougher and more competitive the first year. It didn't show up so much in the W / L column that first year, but we were exponentially more competitive that year than we'd been in previous years--certainly not the comedy of errors that were all too prevalent under the previous regime.

I don't "hate" GRob the way that some do on this forum. I was never happier than when he was a lame duck, and scored that win AT Notre Dame. Was so happy for the guy to go out like that, when it was apparent that he wasn't going to be retained. But in retrospect, he got a TON of money and all he accomplished was that he ran the program into the ground. Worst four year stretch in program history, and he literally oversaw a stint where we became the worst--bar none--BCS program in college football. Given that, I certainly don't feel any reason to root for him like the OP. Kudos to him for scoring another job, but I'm not pulling for him.

Uh, isn't this his first real job in three years? And he's a mid season replacement. There aren't many who have taken two historic programs and driven them both into the ground in the span of four years. It's quite an accomplishment. When Rich Rod left Michigan he had a top 10 offense and sub 100 defense.

When he left Syracuse he was in the 100 teens in almost every offensive and defensive category. It's an achievement that few have obtained.

Again, we had a horrible 4 year stretch, but if he drove the program into the ground (there is a difference) we don't win 8 games in year 2 of Marrone.

And he didn't drive Michigan anyplace. He wasn't the HC not was he even running a defense of his choice.

Btw, I believe when P left, we were a 100's defense.

Some of your attributions don't jibe with the conversation I had with Ryan Nassib's mom before the Minnesota game last year about their family's feelings about each respective coaching staff.

Robinson definitely deserves credit for recognizing Nassib as a prospect and recruiting him. No argument there. But besides his redshirt year, the entire rest of his career and development were all on Marrone. Kid ended up being the most prolific single season passer in program history. I credit the coaching staff we had, not the previous staff that brought him in but wasn't involved in developing him over the full course of his career.

I just remember him talking about The Little Engine That Could at a presser. After that I didn't know how to feel

That's why I love discussing these things with Go. The logic is bullet proof.

absolutely correct, besides Arthur Jones, who obviously has ridiculous blood lines, there was very little player development taking place during those dark days.

I think he might be the only coach that Dick V fired in his life. When i was in KC he was hated. Took one of the best D in the NFL and destroyed it in a year
