...sort of. he refused to be interviewed. It's ultimately not about him but about how other sports suffer in favor of football during economic downturns, (or any other excuse).

The part about Coyle not giving the UM men’s gymnastics coach the opportunity to attempt his plan to make the program self funding (and keep competing) made him look awful.

It’s a segment worth watching for more than just the Coyle shade thrown.

I didnt get the story. Whats the argument? Dont invest in what makes money? Raise tuition to further subsidize these non-revenue sports? I thought we need to pay the athletes. Where does that money come from? These ppl need to get their story straight. Also, schools should just stop giving scholarships for these non revenue sports. That would save money. Also, if the US olympic org believes college sports are that important, then why don’t they pay for their survival. Looks like the ceo of usa olympics makes $600k per year and can bonus for another $300k. Lets cut her salary.

When a football coach makes 4 million dollars and the three sports saved cost less then half of that a year is that not a problem. He wouldn’t even let the coach try and raise money for the program. Didn’t even give it a shot. Shows it wasn’t money

But thats the market for a football coach. Football makes money that allows the other sports to survive. You make more money the better your program is. To have a good program, you need a good coach. You also need good players. Hence you invest in your asset. These are basic and indisputable concepts.

If its not money, then what is it? Is there some grand scheme to torpedo gymnastics?

Other sports should support themselves or stop complaining.

Thank god there are programs like 60 minutes that never have an agenda

How many of the Olympic sports are funded by football revenue. So you want him to cut back the program that pays the bills but keep the ones that

Cmon mate. The exorbitant facilities these guys build and use are absurd. They showed Minnesota’s new locker room that probably cost more then all non revenue sports cost

No offense but you’re out of touch. That’s what it takes to bring in recruits and play at that level. Football and basketball is an arms race. Syracuse lost that race by not even trying. Look at our program now. At one time Syracuse was a lot better program. Now look at the two.

Did they show the athletic village? Now that it impressive and what Syracuse needs to do.

Ultimately the pro leagues need to make their own development leagues and let college sports be true amateurs so you don’t need to spend hundreds of millions on 2 sports while others get cut

football and basketball probably need to leave the NCAA. They need to be set up as corporations, that are for profit, and figure that out. it's an eco system that has grown out of control for the NCAA system.

A college is a place of higher learning. if it becomes a home for just two developmental programs, it's just an academy at that point.

Did you watch it. Coyle wouldn’t even let men’s gymnastics try and fund itself. He just cut it

Men's sports can't fund themselves without having a women sport counterpart. Men's gymnastics would have to be offset somewhere or another women's sport expanded in #'s.

They only cut men’s sports as a result of budget constraints. So therefore if men’s could fund themselves there is no reason to cut them. Unless, like the coach said in the program, they are using Covid as an excuse

Facilities aren't as important as you think they are. And while things are an arms race, Syracuse's problems have far more to do with shifting demographics than facilities.

That's a tough line to walk. When you do that are the sports really connected to the schools anymore? Without school affiliations, do people really care about them anymore?

That is so far from the truth. We are directly recruiting with schools who have invested a lot more into their programs then Syracuse has. Kids want to be wowed and we have not done that. It started back in the 80s. They built the dome which worked to attract talent then stopped there. The we are the only horse in town line said it all. The issue is Nys killed high school football so the only horse starved with lesser and lesser local talent. Compound that with any real connections in hotbed areas. So you have mediocre facilities no outside connections and the result is an awful record, a coaching carousel and a university that is just starting to properly fund. Is it too late though.
