Marlowe Wax Injury

Heard and ZMG battle incoming. Looking forward to it.
Seems like it’s between Heard and Sparrow as those are the guys that saw action after he went out and Sparrow is the other LB that is #2 on the depth chart. But Fran likely swaps in the third best LB regardless of which position he was slotted at. But guessing Heard may have the edge since earlier in the week Fran said Heard was pushing Wax.

NC State game is exactly 6 weeks so it would be great if he made it back for that one. If not, seems likely he plays for Pitt game which is 7 weeks out.

If he made it back for NC State that would mean he plays in all ACC games except GT which wouldn’t be all that bad all things considered. But he also doesn’t have those 6 weeks of additional experience to figure out the new defensive scheme unfortunately.

Friendly reminder that Stanford is in the ACC this year.

The bigger news here is that there is news. Not just the dreaded undisclosed lower body injury, and we never hear a word about it again, or ever see the player again. At least knowing 6 weeks is a huge step in a good direction that we are being informed.

Not great not terrible.

We cannot have more on the back end though.

Schedule works out well there. Having him back for home stretch is a huge addition.
He might be able to come back for the Pitt game and there would be what 6 games left? Hope for a speedy recovery

Continuing the conversation:

Who steps up for Marlowe Wax? You need, IMO, someone who has experience and played games at the position. That is a big order, because only two players at the LB position on this team has minor experience in games. The LB’s we have are young and need to add muscle weight. Everyone is either a or RF.

It is going to be interesting to see who Fran puts in a key position. Will he stick with a LB who is a RF or move someone at another position to WLB alongside RF James Heard?

I have listed all the LB’s with the most experience at the top. The players below them are freshman who need a year to practice and gain weight and learn. The loss of Wax for 6 weeks or longer is a big deal. Someone is going to have to get in and play.

My guess, and that’s what it is since Fran will do the selection, is since our DB room is full take Justin Barron at 6’ 4” 232 and put him next to Heard or Omopariola or Zyian Moultrie Goddard who are both listed at DE on this week’s chart. Who would YOU move?

* = no experience

For comparison the average size of an NFL LB is 6’2” 245 and most run the 40 in 4.4 - 4.6.

I love Wax I really do and I think his football knowledge is absolutely irreplaceable and his leadership falls in the same category.

But we would be doing ourselves a disservice if we don’t recognize that Wax is a bit undersized and that was shown a couple times when he missed tackles in the first half. This is literally of no fault of his own, just pure size related.

We also can’t help but notice some of the guys behind him are a little larger.

This is an oppurtunity to step up and see what we have behind him and what our future is.

Does it suck losing Wax? 1000% yes.

Is it catastrophic and as significant as losing OG last season? Not sure, but my initial thought is that it is not. We’re going to find out.
